...When you use 3 characters as a party, the remaining ones don't level up, correct? Well, or at least they get half EXP...?

I recently started playing VII again. I mainly use Nanaki and Barret, and level them up 3 levels before I switch parties. Well, just last night I noticed that ALL of the characters were in the same level. o_O It's been over 8 years since I played the game, so I don't remember if the characters all level up together...or just the ones that are in your current party.

All my characters are now level 31...and I hardly used Aeris, Cait Sith, or Yuffie. Sure, I switch every now and then, but why the heck are they all leveling up the same time? Or is that even normal?

I could've swear that 8 years ago, I was leveling up each character individually...and that whenever someone in my current party leveled up, the rest would stay the level that I last left them in. They don't level up along with my current active party!

It doesn't seem to be that way this time around now...which I find weird...

No, FFVII is one of the few FF's in which your "inactive" party also levels up. I'm not sure how it works, but they don't level up the same as the party you're using.

I think it's because of the plot advancements that move you along the game. Every time you get a major scene, the rest of the characters level up to (mostly) the same level as the ones that you're using at the current time. At least....that's what experience told me....

I beleive they set that up, because there are so many parts where you have to use specific characters. like Barret in the Gold saucer, or Yuffie in Wutai. Those parts would be impossible to do if you never level those characters.

The inactive team always receives half the EXP your main team is getting, without a toll on how much you actually obtain. I'd have expected your inactive party to be around 25 or something at that point... odd. But considering you level them all up often... eh.

That's exactly it. I know now that they do receive half the EXP my active party receive, but not at the rate that it's going. From what I remember back then, I had to go back and level up some of the characters and they were way behind.

This time around, I'm now trying to level up all the characters at the same time. However, the weird thing is that I leveled up two of them 5 levels...I checked the PHS, and voila, the rest of the characters also leveled up 5 levels...hence, they are all the same levels now - apart from Cloud, who's a few levels above.

Anyway, I'm not complaining. Less characters to level up. I just found it odd. o_O Also, it now defeats the purpose of switching party members to level them up...although I still do it anyway just so that their limit breaks can level up as well.

I was always under the impression that the characters outside of the party gained a level after the others in the party had gained three levels...apparently not.

They only gain half the exp? That doesn't make any sense to me either to be honest, cause about the whole last half of the game, the only 3 characters I used were Cloud, Tifa & Vincent, and I got them to level 95, without using any of the other characters, and they still somehow all got to level 85 or 86.

I noticed that, too. It does seem strange at first until you take intop consideration that there are several times when you are forced to use certain party members that you might not have normally. Example, I used to rarely use Cid. I've always used Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Red XIII, and then suddenly two of them aren't available... so very luckily for me Cid wasn't left behind in EXP.

Now, if only their limit breaks went up automatically...

XD I'm absolutely 100% positive that this happens at certain points in the story. Your reserve characters do not earn exp if you don't use them in battle. I remember this happening as well, but your reserves only level up (not by much actually) after vital points in the game.

I think thats asking too much :D

I don't think that the inactive members get 50% I'd say less, something like 25%. Interesting though what happened to you, hehe now you don't have to bother lvl them up separately :D. Cool

No, the characters you don't use DO level up. What happens, is that every time your main character levels, they level. Basically, when Cloud levels, so does everyone else not in your group. This is slower than if they were in your active group, but it prevents them from falling too far behind the others.

How is that slower? Cloud is almost always in the main party... so anytime he levels, everyone else does? If anything that is faster than switching them out. And I can already tell you that is not true... because there have been plenty of times where I'd leave Red XIII at level 23, then come back to him several hours later and he... is still at Level 23.

It must be an EXP percentage or the levels increase at certain points in the storyline.

Remeber that each level has a different amount of EXP to gain from any other, so they wouldn't gain simply half the levels your active party do.

Um, i don't think they level up at the same speed but the inactive members defo recieve SOME exp

It's slower because lower level chars level up faster than high level chars. Cloud is always at a higher level, on the account he is always in the active party. So, basically, if they were in the active group, they would be gaining 2 levels for every one of Cloud's levels. See? Slower.

And yes, that IS how it works. Just because you come back hours later and Red hasn't leveled doesn't mean that it doesn't work that way. Cloud must level for all the other inactive chars to level. Once you get to the higher levels (55+) it's every other level that the other chars level. Get it?

It's interesting how they set that up... I don't know if they did this from the start?

I always expected the inactive party members to level up slightly, just to create the feeling that they would too have battles along the way as well as the main party.
I tries to rotate anyway, but it's handy to know that if you don't to use someone they will still level up slightly anyway; yay!

Its always a good thing to dot aht though, you never know when you will need them.

But waht about when Rufus and CLoud get into a scuffle, by taht point in time they would have had to show everyone else where to go in the sotryline.

:Edit: I did not double post. SOmeone deleted a post that was here. I swear.
