I'm talking of course about tattoos, piercings, scarring, stretching/gauging and other possible existent forms. I find body modification to be a beautiful and very unique method of transforming yourself into an individual person. I know not all people like it others do, like I know how way back that kind of thing was stereotypically viewed for symbols of gangs, criminals, cults and what not. But today it can mean anything. Some people say that they can do whatever they want with their body, and others just think it's plain revolting. Like my grandparents - they think its just wrong, and would rather I wait till I'm out of the house to begin that kind of thing (I have none yet, but would like to have some now.). They're also shocked by the fact that I want to be a tattoo artist when I grow up, but they're not arguing against it since my career path is my choice. But I always thought that the earlier the practice, the more successful you'll be in the future - especially looking the part. The mods I want? The only facial piercings I want is my nose pierced and a single stud anti-eyebrow, that and my naval - but that's common. I want an industrial, daith, conch, and a tragus piercing for my ears. I most likely will stretch my lobes when I get older (definitely after I'm out of the house), probably to size 1" inch (25.4 mm). As for tattoos, well I'm not giving out my ideas. I'm very paranoid about people stealing my work, since the majority of the tattoos I want I come up with on my own, not by a picture in a sample book. Let's just say I want a lot of them. The places for the tattoos I know I want already are mainly a half-sleeve on my right arm, right inner wrist, majority of my back, both feet, both outer ankles, left hand, and my right outer thigh. Do any of you have any you want to share? What are your views of body mods?

Hm. I'm neutral to these body modifications.

I mean, sure, individuality and all, but I can't really be bothered. Admittedly, I also have a sort of stereotyped view to people with tatoo, considering how it's associated mostly with the criminal underground here in my country.... But that's not really extensive.

I accept that there are some people who tatoo purely for, like what you said, individuality, maybe art as well... Man, I've even heard of cases where people tatoo purely for religious reasons... And sometimes, the pure quirky -- but I can't actually recall a specific example at this point in time.

But >.> Me is sitting on a fence.

Well in America, the majority of the people that have tattoos do it for the uniqueness. But I'm aware of what they used to symbolize. But honestly, I think I liked it better when tattoos were kind of rejected. Here in school, it seems like 97.9% of the students that go here want a tattoo, and I bet 60% of them want them for the wrong reasons. I hear kids talk about in the hallway at least once every day and it gets me mad. But yeah, I'm not in it for the popularity. Some kids want to impress their friends so bad that they do it themselves with a safety pin and printer ink (literally stabbing a design into their parts and then rubbing the impaled areas with the ink.), and it's just the stupidest thing to me - but to each their own I suppose; I mean that will most likely affect their career privaleges 10-20 years from now. All of the tattoos I want and their meanings are completly thought out by me.

I want to get a tattoo but I have put thought into it and I couldn't really care about what other people think. I have a couple of friend's that have tattoo's but it has different meaning to each of them and you wouldn't notice it on the cause there mostly on there upper arm, back and ankle.

I have a couple of different friend's that want a tattoo cause they like the way they look and at least they all have sense never to get I love whatever his/her name is on there body in case they ever break up.

Trying to give yourself a tattoo is a stupid idea in case it get's infected at least get it done by a professional and getting a tattoo when your very young is another bad idea as if you not finished growing the tattoo will stretch and look like crap.

I don't mind piecing cause they can close but people splitting there tongue's and and getting there ear's pointed to make them look like elf ear's now that's body modification that's gone a bit to far.

I've got no problems with it. In fact, I've often thought about scaring something onto my arm. But I want to make damned sure I get a professional on that. If not, I would just get it tattooed onto me. Like I said, I don't really have any problems with body mods, except for maybe people that get the huge "fruit loop" ear hole things. I just don't find that attractive at all. :hmmm:

I don't mind it, I quite like it. I'm not sure how I feel about doing some of the stuff to myself, stuff under the skin to make shapes on your flesh, and i doubt id ever have them big holes in my ears, but on other people, is fine. It looks pretty hot on a man actually :ryan: I wouldn't mind a tattoo/peirced clad man, as long as it wasnt too over the top, but that's just my personal preference.

I don't think Il get any more peircings, i rarely wear ear rings never mind out else. Ive got that middle part of my ear peiced thats always in, until i lose the stud and i have to get another one, and i used to have my nose and eyebrow peirced, neither of which i fancy again. I also have my nipple peirced, and i only did that on an impulsive whim

Tattoos however, I wouldnt mind being covered in, its just to costly and i can never decide on what i want. My first one is some shitty dolphion that i got as soon as i was old enough and i was bored on my dinner hour, why not i thought. I want it covering up, either proper like, with summat pretty large, or just get someone to tattoo a top hat, pipe, monocle and waist coat on it...

Anyway, each to their own, what ever their reasons, it's their body, some folk look amazing, some.... don't but I'l be damed if I'd let any one say I shouldnt do this that or the other, so why should I judge others?

tl;dr: I like it

I don't have a problem with any of that, but I've never seen a tattoo that hasn't looked like a mistake. It might be a thought out visual reflection of yourself, but what you have to remember is that eventually the novelty will die down and beyond that all it really is is clothing you can't take off.

My grandfather got a tattoo when he was younger and he's now older, and that's what I think about every time I see a topic about this sort of thing.

How will it look when I'm older?

And in my opinion, tattoos are just, as Tom said, clothing you can't take off. Only you can't wash it away. It's there forever.

However, I can't help but like certain tattoos on men, they just look attractive. Of course, not all over, though. But on women, I don't know, I jus' don't appreciate it. :/

I would never get a tattoo on my body, like, never ever. I just think it kinda looks unclean(not to say it actually is) but still, I wouldn't do it.

But, I'm not stoppin' anyone else from thinking it's beautiful.

After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I haven't got a problem with any of the above mentioned as it isn't my body, it's theirs and they can do with it whatever they like.

Doesn't mean to say I don't look at certain things on people and can't help but think, 'Ewe'.

Some people in my opinion go way too far with stretching their earlobes and getting lumps and shit put under their skin. >.<

I absolutely adore tattoos and piercings. I have 3 tattoos now and 9 piercings.

Though I'm finished with the piercings now I think. They're mostly in my ears.

1 in my Hilux
4 in my earlobes
2 in my tragus's
1 in my nose
1 in my naval

Tattoos are on my left foot, right ankle and lower back.

I'm off to get another one next year as well. $700 it will be. :gonk:

Can't wait though. I'm very smart where I get them too. I get them where they are always covered up unless I want people to see them. That way when I get older I won't look like some scabby old lady like you see in my area all the time.

It really doesn't look that great when you get older and they fade and such.

That's another thing I know of that people often bring into the topic of this - how they will look once you're older. And honestly, I don't care how they'll look once I'm older. We are most likely going to get other permanent scars and what not as we go on through life, or signs of aging that may also effect other things a part of your body . But I always say that when I'm 50+, the only one seeing me naked is me. And I've seen some aged people around that have been modified in some way that actually still look good. Maybe they're just the lucky ones, but we're all going to look gross at some point - no matter what we have visible on our skin.

I love it, on girls especially.
I used to have my lip done but i had to get rid of it when i got my job.
My ears are 15mm and have been for about 3 - 4 years, i researched it alot before i did it, so i took my time and did it properly, so they turned out really well so they should look okay when i'm older, although i'm not really fussed.
I also want to get a tattoo when i can afford it, but it has to be out of sight for work :|

(Not saying that you were directing this post towards myself only, I just thought I'd respond anyway with more thoughts on the matter. >.<)

This it true. I just meant for me, I like to get my tattoos in places where I can easily hide them and it's not such a bitch to cover up if I have too.

When some people look at older people (mainly older women) and see them with tattoos, they often think of them as trashy and yuck etc.

Very few people will see them as a person who obviously 'lived' when they were younger. Some people don't care, but I do when it comes to this sort of thing.

I work in a pharmacy currently and all my other jobs have required me to have no facial piercings (always have to take out my nose ring during the week) and no visible tattoos.

So I still get them done, just in places where you will never see them too easily. >.< It has to require me lifting up a top or whatever for you to get a glimpse.

Also, if you have your tattoos out all the time in the sun they fade and go yuck if you don't have them touched up, which is another reason why I don't get them in places that aren't always covered up. Really couldn't be bothered getting them touched up all the time. The money and the pain. :gonk:

For the career(s) I want, I shouldn't have to worry about the prohibitions of tattoos and piercings. It would be very unusual for open body mods to not be aloud in tattoo parlors, and since producers don't worry about the appearance of people that want to be authors, there shouldn't be a problem there either. For regular jobs, I would want to work in the most non-discriminating place that would let you work no matter you have done on you. I've applied to places like Game Stop, Barnes And Noble, and Body Central and I've seen many employees with large amounts of mods - so I wouldn't have to be concerned about that.

Ehh, I don't care what people do to themselves. It's up to them whether or not they want to do it. I know that I'm gonna want to get at least one tattoo when I'm older. The tribute to Eddie Guerrero. This one won't just be a pointless drawing, it'll have meaning to it. Anyway, I don't mind or care what other people do with themselves as far as tattoos, piercings, etc. goes.
