Best Overworld

I know it's a random question but at least it's kind of original for these best/worst topics. Which FF game do you think had the best overworld to traverse? It doesn't really matter how you traverse it (linear or freeroam) or what was on it... but which continent structure did you like the best.

I personally liked Final Fantasy IX's. I thought it was exactly the right combination of land to water. It was basically a four arc landmasses that formed a general circle shape with water and a few islands in the center. Each land mass was completely unique from the others in appearance and atmosphere and it's great development really helped make the chocobo hunting minigame all the more enjoyable.

I agree, FFIX had a great overworld. I would have liked a few more locations on the other continents, though. Most of the settlements were concentrated on Mist. Would have been nice to have more on the outer continent especially.

Agreed, FFIX's was good, I like it much more then I did FFVII's for various reasons, It;s sorta hard to explain, I liked the structure better I suppose is the main thing.

I think FFIX had the best over world map, I liked how it was so huge and varied from region to region, no two areas where quite the same, and it was nice to explore.

FFVIII and FFVII have really good ones too, with FFVII just beating FFVIII's in my opinion, but IX's is the best.

When I first saw this topic, the first one I thought of was FFIX as well. They really did do a fantastic job with it.

I like FFIX as well - the four continents, each with their own landscape and features works well (even if the names for the continents are rather functional - Lost, Forgotten, Outer, Mist). It is a very sparsely populated world though when you think about it!

Probably a run away winner here with FFIX's as well. Going from green pastures to snowy mountains, to desert palaces, and such really made for a fine array of landmasses.

I will say though that FFVII did fairly well with this as well. Flying around the FFVII World-Map you could see so many distinguishing features on the map such as the little land of sand where Rudy WEAPON dwells, the Northern Crater, Costa Dell Sol, Midgar, the domain of the Zolom, etc.

For as good as FFIX's is, I say FFVII's is fairly close behind.

The overworld in IX kinda annoyed me at times, i hated the fact that it was misty and you couldnt see. VIII, hmm cant really think of nowt particularly great about that to be honest. Id vote VII. Why? i liked areas like wutai where you could cross the bridges, cosmo canyon also a favourite, with the constant sunset and of course the marshes with the zolem.

Hmmm thinking about it the world map is really boring....but il vote VII

Cept for the last post IX seemed to be a unanimous winner. I loved everything about IX's, from the music, to the random battles. It was just done with perfection and in all honesty I can't think of another FF game that comes close to what IX did with it.

I think that IX's also the best one The variety of areas and the different atmosphere and story in every town/city/continent. Really liked it. Still I think XI has a beautiful and cool one too. It's somehow so Final Fantasy like world, tho FF IX is much better at it as well FF VII is.

I liked most FFV, FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX overworlds, they are all great, altought My favorite is VIII, IX has a little "problem" and thats the Mist, altought gives more reallity, I disliked it when I reached CD4 were the world was completely surrounded by mist.

As for VIII, I loved the World Map design, the whole giant forests, the trains moving from one place to another, the deserts were good as well, and the Chocobo Holy Forest was a maze-like forest, which is kinda different from the others.

Altought all the worlds mentioned above are also great in their own way.
