Part of the reason why series lasted this long is because it never had a true sequel (until X-2 but that is another story). Final Fantasy had always been about exploring new ideas with each game starting over from scratch and creating new stories. Despite this however there are some who feel that games do connect even if they continue the previous games storyline or themes. Here are some examples you can note:
These are some of ideas I can think of but what do you guys think? Other than the Prelude, Chocobos, Moogles and the Victory themes, do the games connect to each other?
- The first five games have the crystals as the main macguffins in the game. Final Fantasy V feels more like a satire of the previous games especially since it feels more like a sequel to a previous game. The crystals have mysterious powers that utilize the four classical elements and they could be used to connect to other worlds.
- Nomura did state Final Fantasy X takes place centuries before Final Fantasy VII, Materia could take the place of the spheres of Spira.
- Final Fantasy VIII could be connected to Final Fantasy III what with the monsters being from the moon and Hyne being mentioned in both games.
- Final Fantasy IX is more a tribute to the earlier games.
- The Ivalice Alliance includes Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story and their sequels.
- Gilgamesh is a notorious dimensional traveler who goes between worlds and is sometimes an ally.
- Dissidia does combine the plots of the games into one big crossover although the friendship theme is annoying.
