Are the games connected to each other?

Part of the reason why series lasted this long is because it never had a true sequel (until X-2 but that is another story). Final Fantasy had always been about exploring new ideas with each game starting over from scratch and creating new stories. Despite this however there are some who feel that games do connect even if they continue the previous games storyline or themes. Here are some examples you can note:

  1. The first five games have the crystals as the main macguffins in the game. Final Fantasy V feels more like a satire of the previous games especially since it feels more like a sequel to a previous game. The crystals have mysterious powers that utilize the four classical elements and they could be used to connect to other worlds.
  2. Nomura did state Final Fantasy X takes place centuries before Final Fantasy VII, Materia could take the place of the spheres of Spira.
  3. Final Fantasy VIII could be connected to Final Fantasy III what with the monsters being from the moon and Hyne being mentioned in both games.
  4. Final Fantasy IX is more a tribute to the earlier games.
  5. The Ivalice Alliance includes Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story and their sequels.
  6. Gilgamesh is a notorious dimensional traveler who goes between worlds and is sometimes an ally.
  7. Dissidia does combine the plots of the games into one big crossover although the friendship theme is annoying.

These are some of ideas I can think of but what do you guys think? Other than the Prelude, Chocobos, Moogles and the Victory themes, do the games connect to each other?

Besides what you've written, I really don't think there's anything else.

The first five are heavily crystal related. But I don't think that makes them connected. Especially not II or IV. I, III, and V kind of seem more related to each other. Also, I would like to point out that it was Nojima who made the connection between VII and X, not Nomura. At least Nomura hasn't to my knowledge.

FFIX does have a lot of references to the early games. FF1 and 2 came to mind the most. I think some have even suggested that FFIX is connected to FF1. Which is interesting. I don't necessarily believe that, but it's interesting.

Well, I think VI, VII, VIII, X, XII, and XIII can be connected just because the themes that they all have with each other.

In order I think it'd go V, VI, XII, IX, X, XIII, VIII, then VII. Why? because VII's world is obviously not as evolved as the prior games, so it makes sense in this order because their world regresses until you have VII. I think it would take something really terrible happening for their world to go from really high-tech machinery to the idiot world that VII is (what with their never being in space before).

Nomura has already said X and VII are tied together, so I do think it's possible. Yeah.

Yeah, but you can't have a reference exist without it having some kind of connection. At least not for these types of references.

I would tend to agree that they are just simple references, there to make players go 'oh, hey wait a minute I recognise that from somewhere :D'. There's nothing meaningfull really. I mean, even the reference from X to VII isn't solid at all, I have no idea how it would ever make sense and it all stems from one little thing that Shinra said in X-2 doesn't it? About taking power from the farplane and harnessing it? That's an ironic reference, but it doesn't mean that Shinra grows up to form a company that does exactly that, the time frame would be way off the mark for a start.

^ Maybe not but they nevertheless do share similar themes, even if these games were on a timeline it wouldn't make that much sense as there would be many inconsistencies.

Exactly my point. Nomura never said anything about FFX and VII being related. Not that it discredits the connection, I'm just saying that info is wrong.

X and VII being connected seems more like a fan fic, I believe that someone in square said it could be possible, but I don't think that was ever there intent...

And I don't think the games should ever be connected (minus sequels to each one of course.) I mean having fun easter eggs, like IX had so many of, is all great, but to say one game is truly connected to another, seems a little too far fetched in my opinion.

I agree. Even if they did say it, I consider it more of their own little theory rather than an actual plot connection. That's the way I view it anyway.
