[31/03] Toriyama: Final Fantasy leading ladies’ looks come second

As much as I like Noruma's style, I don't like seeing it in every FF game. I would really like to see the return of Amano designed characters. I would also love to see a return to a fantasy setting with a mix of technology. FF XIII was technology with a mix of fantasy.

There is a good reason IV and IX are my two absolute favourites.

“With Lightning, one look at the design made me say ‘This is it!’ She looked so cool and strong that there was no need for any retakes. It was the same way with Yuna.”

Someone is talking bullshit. They admitted before the game came out that some of Lightning's sex appeal was transferred to Fang. Also, she did change...

Uuum...wasn't FFXIII first intended for PS2? It makes sense that they'd streamline their graphics a little after moving to PS3 and 360 to take full advantage of the high definition graphics. Looks are to a certain degree important in a game, and they'll stop me from playing a game if the characters look bad enough. Say all you like how you the looks of people like Brahne neeeeever came into your mind. :wacky:

And honestly, Lightning's personality and development shone through to me more than any other character. It's really no worse than the likes of Squall, who seems to get a lot more praise for his development. Sure it's a little generic, but let's face it. The defrosting ice queen is a character archetype that's been used since the 70s, and it's personally one of my favorite archetypes. It's been done just as well in FFXIII as in any other game, really.

Though again, this is my opinion. Subjective etc.

Sorry but I gotta agree with Jeer here, there's constructively critising FFXIII which I encourage and respect, and there's picking at it for the sake of picking at it. They can perk up graphics y'know, especially considering the console generation change.

As for the female designs. Eh. I've always kinda liked them, though Vanille and Fang's designs done virtually nothing for me. But tbh, looks sell, call it shallow, but there have been times when I haven't watched/played/read something cause I didn't like the art style or the character designs. There have been a few lady designs that haven't really stood out for me in FF, such as Vanille and Fang didn't do much. But see Jeer's post above for my views on Lightning, it's pretty much mutual. :wacky:

Mercurial, I see your point, but, that's not much of a change...they changed her hair/eye color and her expression. And she's definitely more attractive now than the first picture, where she's giving a "LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE" look.

But, for that matter, I think all of the women in XIII were gorgeous, so. That was the best part about the game, for me. lol.

Like I said before, I think they're kind of misrepresenting what he's saying. He's just pointing out that he tries to match their looks with their personalities, and I think he accomplished that really well in XIII. Fang acting like Vanille would be really strange, and vice versa.

i agree with the others... look there only been a colour change and a graphic improvement :hmmm:

like others said FFXIII was originally designed for PS2... to the point that models of yuna was used in early testing for lighting :D

But they admitted to taking the sex appeal away from Lightning to give it to Fang. That's more than just a graphics update, it comes straight from Nomura's mouth who would know since he designed the characters. The more Toriyama opens his mouth the more it seems he is clueless which is probably why FFXIII was patched together. :ffs:

Nor is that picture just a graphical update, the facial features have clearly been reconstructed and she's slimmer. The reveal trailer wasn't for the PS2 either, Yuna was used as the prototype, not Lightning.

I guess he'll be saying towns weren't included because they were too lazy... oh wait...

One of these days, I'd like to read the Final Fantasy Dictionary, so I can figure out precisely what the hell they mean when they say "cool and strong" because Lightning is neither. When she isn't being a complete bitch, she's an emotionless drone with about as much character development as Vaan had.

They probably realised that Lightning looked too much like a female version of Cloud, so they covered their own arses by saying Fang was meant to be the pretty one...and I believe she was meant to be a man originally, but got changed because they realised the only female character they had with sex appeal was Vanille, and she was a) barely legal, and b) annoying as hell.

If its not women who look like men, its men who look like woman. And you people say I have gender issues!

I don't buy this.

If I was straight, the only appeal of most of the female characters in Final Fantasy would be sticking my penis in them to be blunt. Besides Yuna and a few others, they don't have really good personalities.

To be short, I don't buy this.

First...

What were they thinking when they said looks come second??? If they came second, Yuna would not be wearing butt shorts and for what I think the most part is, a bra in X-2. Lightning wouldn't be wearing a strip of fabric for a skirt, and ...Vaan wouldn't be dressed so scantily-clad :sad3:

This may have been the case in the past with some of the older characters like Rosa who I think looked more modest, and Rinoa but really can someone tell me they aren't pushing the sex factor to the max with Lightning's new outfit in XIII-2??? :hmmm: ....No :monster:

SE in my opinion is putting a lot of their cookies into the sex factor to be able to help sell their games. If they focused more on character development and plot, they wouldn't have to count on the looks of their characters to sell their games :monster:
