so as some of you know I got a Second YLOD on my PS3... which is very frustrating, and Sony says I would have to pay another $100 to send it back to them to get another PS3....
SCREW THAT! its only a 40gb anyways...

so I'm debating on what to do.. does anyplace buy YLOD PS3's?
and which PS3 I should get.... any ideas?

2nd YLOD... that's pretty gutting. :gonk: I got my first one a couple of weeks ago and I haven't got a new PS3 yet. :hmmm:

As for the first question, from what the tech support guy told me and what people have said on the PS forums... No. You generally won't find a retailer that will buy your broken PS3. However, what you could do is sell it on eBay. I know that people sell broken Blackberries and PSPs etc on there. I think they buy them for the spare parts I guess. That being said, you won't get a lot of money for it I imagine, online or if you find place willing to buy it offline.

Another option is to fix it yourself and sell it as a fixed PS3. Retail shops in the UK at least, like GAME, will buy old consoles and probably give something in the range of £50, last time I checked in the shop anyway. Which is about $80 according to the converter on my computer. :mokken: There's no guarantee you can fix it yourself and you'll probably have to spend a bit of money getting the tools to fix it so not an ideal option admittedly. :hmmm:

I think your best option (I'm doing it as well) is just to buy a new PS3. Just check Amazon/eBay/the game retailer you use and suss out the prices. I checked Amazon UK and a 160GB slim PS3 was £234 and I checked the US Amazon and it said $299. You should check around but I think they're likely to be in that sort of range for a new one.

As for what you should get, honestly, I think you should just get a new slim. It's lighter, cooler (temperature wise :mokken:), and most of them have plenty of storage. It's not much more expensive but I had a 60GB fat PS3 and never had any problems so 320GB PS3s are a bit excessive for me. It all depends on you really. Personally, I would never hand over a load of money for such an expensive used item either, I'd rather have it new, with a fresh guarantee/warranty. :wacky:
You should also check for bundles. I'm thinking of getting a bundle from GAME and you usually get a fairly recent game thrown in as well so at least you have a new game to play once you boot up the new PS3. :dave:

That was a long post. 8( But I've been without a PS3 for a while so I've been looking into getting a new one for a while. :mokken:

Anyway, good luck. :neomon:

Definitely go for the slims. Oxide pretty much already covered it. :)

Question about YLOD in general though...is there any indication beforehand that shows any signs of YLOD? I'm just curious because my PS3 has been acting up weird lately. There's been a few times where it'll freeze and I can't turn the PS3 off at all unless I unplug the cord, but that was the last resort. Yesterday I turned it on (a few hours later after watching Netflix), and the green light was on, but it wasn't starting up on my screen. Had to turn it off a few times and back on, but nothing. So I finally unplugged my HDMI cable and input it in the 2nd port, and that seemed to work. I placed it back to the first port and everything was normal again. I just wonder if I'm about to have an unwelcome visit from YLOD.

Constant freezing and having to reformat the system is how mine started. I don't think there are actually any "signs to look for" as such since more often or not it comes down to the heat sink overheating so the system won't allow itself to turn on. So really it could happen at any given moment, though overheating is MUCH less likely to happen with a slim model.

It definitely sounds dodgy Mits, but it really depends. I didn't notice anything odd before I got my YLOD, while my mate has a PS3 that sounds like it's falling apart but it's been going strong for over 3 years.

From what I've read, people start having problems as early as 18 months after buying their system (the fat models btw). If you've had it a while and use it a lot, then it may be something to look out for. I would back up all your data and sync your trophies just to be safe.

I have no idea how to back up my data; my brother in-law explained it but the way he worded things sounded so complicated.

Thanks for the quick response!

I have no idea either, that's why I don't have any of my data saved or all the trophies I got from the GoW collection. :(

There's an option under System Settings and it should say back up data.

If you haven't already seen or know that :wacky:

When backing up your save data, try not to just save it straight to a USB flash drive, you'll find that when you try to use it again on another PS3 it'll either be locked entirely or block you from unlocking trophies. If you're a member of PSN+ you can save your data to the cloud save (online storage) which is easy enough to reuse.

It is possible to fix the YLOD (and suprisingly easy) I've fixed two of them. Check on youtube, there are some videos on how to do it.

If I can do it, I'm sure that you can to ;)

While it might be easy, I know people wouldn't wanna fuck and tinker with their precious PS3 only to make it more worst.

And it's only gonna make it worst, if the person doing a DIY fix it doesn't understand the parts and whatnot.

I know how to fix some thing, but even I won't want to take apart my Ps3 and try to fix it myself.

Have you tried to fix one? Is so easy that my technologically-retarded brother did it. A YLOD PS3 is useless anyway, if it's going to cost $100 just to have sony do the same thing you might as well give it a try.

Of course, if it's still under warranty, sure, don't screw with it.
But if it's not, you don't have anything to lose, except $100 if you DO decide to send it to Sony.

YLOD is not curable. Once your console has it, it has it for life. Get it repaired, proffesionally or no, and it'll YLOD again in a few months, like Justice Ramza here has experienced.
Fixing the YLOD is more of a temporary solution, a chance for you to back up everything your data ready for when you get a new console. It's not recommended by anyone to continue using your PS3 like you did before you got the YLOD after it's been repaired.
