Three new videos have turned up showing off the astounding real-time rendering tweaking possible in Square Enix’s Luminous engine.

The videos below show animators quickly and easily making adjustments to aspects of the Agni’s Philosophy trailer. This might not look like much if you’re unfamiliar with how cinematic trailers are put together, but rest assured this kind of power is eye-opening. No wonder Square Enix believes it can lure developers in by keeping this engine close.

Square Enix intends Luminous to power the next generation of Final Fantasy games. Almost incredibly, the publisher expects assets used in cinematics like these to be shared with general gameplay.

Thanks, Zak.

This is all very impressive, but anything Square Enix create using this shiny new engine will still be a piece of shit if they ever bother releasing it. The problem with Square Enix games has never been the engine they run on; it's been everything else. Good graphics don't make good games. I expect PC graphics will surpass this stuff within a year of its release as well, assuming they don't before it even gets released.

Still, I imagine playing around with stuff like that is fun...they make it look far easier than it probably is, anyway. And if it really is THAT easy, Square Enix have no excuse for not adding some actual gameplay or a proper story to their next generation video games, because the "we spent all our time working on the visuals" excuse won't cut it if you can just adjust a setting with a single click. Somehow, I doubt that will be the case, though.

Lumina - it's not really that easy. Game development tools have come a long way in the past decade, but having used a few of them myself, I can definitely tell you that it is not as easy as it looks. Things may be a lot simpler and more efficient once you've got your assets all together, but up to that point there is still a lot of code that has to be written and models that have to be crafted. That isn't to diminish the achievement of the Luminous Engine, of course--it's just that there are still a LOT of manual requirements beyond what we see in those three videos.

Here's another one (a bit older than the above three, but demoing the same)

I wonder what Engine is used on UC cause I love the details on tht game so much. As for these Three tech demos its impressive indeed.

I wish SE is going to stick with these kind of character builds as in more realistic and not strange hair colours.

Next Main protagonist should have a big ass beard lmao.

I do really like the look of this game, but I think if the main focus on FF games is going to be on graphics, then I think they should just start making animated films. Or even take a similar path as those old "interactive" films. A good example are those scenes in Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversay, where you have the cinematic scenes in which you had to push certain buttons and, depending on what you pressed, you either lived or died. I quite enjoyed those scenes, but I couldn't do it for a whole game.

But I mean, if it was more like a film, but integrated with similar features, I think that could be really cool.

I fear the new engine will limitevery game aspect of the series. Graphics looks great but it comes to the point where their already satisfying so its not really important to focus on realism their only limiting the games more.
