Welcome, one and all, to the (un)Official Name That Tune thread!
A general explanation, then, of what this involves:
Each week, a video will be posted up, containing twenty-five second extracts from ten different songs. This video will remain active for precisely one week. At the end of the week, any songs not yet identified will be revealed, and the next video will be posted up. And so on, and so forth. If everything is guessed correctly before the end of the week, I'll post a new video up, and it will run for a week. And so on.
Prizes are in development, much like everything else. At the moment, the prize is having the satisfaction of being right.
The contest is divided into three separate rounds (which may in future have their own threads if this takes off, but for now I’m gathering them all up in one place) which are as follows:
Note that, whilst these are all being held in the same thread, they are in no way connected; there will be separate leader boards (and maybe prizes at some stage if this kicks off) for each one, to keep it as fair as possible: after all, not everyone will want to take part in all three rounds.
Final Fantasy Round
What you will hear in the Final Fantasy Round:
- Official soundtrack from the mothership titles (i.e. that which is used in the games)
- Official soundtrack from the spinoff titles (i.e. that which is used in spinoffs such as Dissidia)
- Official remixes (this includes things such as Distant Worlds, The Black Mages, FFIV Celtic Moon, concerts, etc.)
What you will not hear in the Final Fantasy Round:
- Fan remixes; this would be far too confusing.
- Anything from other Final Fantasy media: Advent Children, The Spirits Within, etc.
- Things from games with Final Fantasy characters in them which are not Final Fantasy. Kingdom Hearts, for example.
Note that I am not taking suggestions for themes for this round. Each week the tracks will be selected at random, because otherwise it’d be far too easy. I may have a unifying theme every once in a while (if I can find one that isn’t painfully obvious) but given that this is an FF forum, and people are going to know the music fairly well, it needs to be at least moderately challenging, and having themes would make it far too simple.
Video Game Round
The Video Game Round will only feature music taken from the game’s official soundtrack. Stuff from Final Fantasy might or might not show up…you’ll just have to listen and find out, won’t you?
If you have any suggestions for the video game round, by all means, post them in the thread (but please try not to swamp the thread with huge lists; I can guarantee I won’t read them/will forget what is on them) and they’ll probably get done eventually. But try and make it a broad topic. Having a theme of a single game would be a bad idea, obviously, because it’d be too easy. But a theme of a game series (such as The Legend of Zelda) would be good, because there is a lot of material to choose from. I will take any and all suggestions into account; you’re the ones playing, not me.
General Round
The place where everything else ends up; the General Round is for anything that isn’t Final Fantasy or video-game related. “Normal” music, I suppose you could say.
As with the Video Game Round, if you’ve got any suggestions for themes for the General Round, post them up in here and they will be taken into account~
