It hasn't even been officially confirmed that a new God of War is in the works and yet we've already heard what is allegedly the release date for God of War 4. Euro magazine
PSM3 claims the next game in the series will be out in September 2012.

That information comes by way of a "source [that] works closely with the God of War universe."

The last console outing for the series, God of War III, was released last March. God of War: Ghost of Sparta came out this past November on PSP and was the second God of War for the handheld device. Something called 'God of War 4' would likely be another console edition, but don't rule out an NGP game. Based on statements made by developer SCE Santa Monica Studio, it might not be a direct continuation of Kratos' story thus far.

"This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we're going to continue to do God of War games," said Santa Monica director of product development John Hight last year. "We're going to be very careful about what we do; we're the keepers of the franchise and we don't want to see it ruined or polluted."

"I think there comes a time when to maintain a high level of quality... the bottom line is you can't get burned out, and the source material can't always be the same," said God of War III director Stig Asmussen prior to the game's release. "I want God of War to be one of those games where if there are more God of Wars, we're seeing them spread out over time -- it's not like our studio's making a new God of War every two or three years or something like that, and then the series becomes irrelevant.

"I like the approach of, 'We just won't make Metroid for 10 years. Why do we have to keep making Metroid?' And then when it comes back, it's fresh and you remember why you loved that game so much. I think it would be good at this point to take that approach with God of War... For a trilogy, it's great. Let's put it to bed for awhile though."

From a creative standpoint that's admirable, though it's not necessarily a sentiment that Sony will share from a business point of view. Were a new God of War released next year, that would completely contradict what Asmussen was talking about, given that it would be a gap of just 30 months between it and God of War III.

I'm in two minds about this, unsurprisingly.

Now, the idea of a new protagonist is one that fills me with both hope and dread. I don't like Kratos, I never liked Kratos. He was one of the most bland, one-dimensional characters I have ever had the misfortune of playing as. Yet...he's the God of War. It wouldn't be GoW without Kratos, and no matter what they do with a new protagonist, he (or she, although that seems unlikely...unfortunately) is always going to be compared to Kratos, and he can't really do anything other than come up short. Give him a personality, and he won't be violent enough for the name. Make him like Kratos, and he'll be seen as a clone. A new protagonist sounds wonderful, but I can't see it working. At all.

The idea of multiple Gods of War is not one I like the sound of. So far, they've been quite lucky that all the God of War games have been of reasonably good quality, but if they start milking the franchise for all its worth I can see it going the way of Halo, with pointless spinoff after pointless spinoff. The PSP games were pushing it, to be honest. It was a fun series with an interesting premise (albeit a shit storyline) but all good things, as they say, must come to an end. They'd be better off working on a new series, in my opinion.

...anyways, I said I was in two minds about this. The other part of me is looking forward to wreaking bloody terror upon anything that moves to an awesomely dramatic soundtrack. There are few games that have an OST as blatantly overdramatic as the GoW series, which is part of what makes it so epic. More of this material would be most welcome, and I expect it'll be fun if they stick to the formula...which they will, because it brings in the money, and games companies have nothing in the way of creativity these days if they're not called "Nippon Ichi Software" :hmph:

Honestly, I don't think they could have used a worse example than that, considering how absolutely diabolical Metroid: Other M was. This fuels my fear even more tha a new GoW protagonist will be shit beyond belief...

Unlike dear Martel above me, I actually loved Kratos' character. Weird, huh? I did, though. Ever since the first one, I have felt the grief he has. His rage is something I can really get, and appeals to me as more than just a reason to turn everything into bloody gibs. That being said, I do not think they should continue on with anymore future points int Kratos' story. They can still fill in the blanks of his life that the games did not fill, but moving on is a very bad move I think.

On a side note, I am assuming this thread is under multiplatform because it's not determined if it is a handheld or PS3 continuation? :hmmm: Completely opinionated but I'd bet it'd end up on the PS3 as the others with numerical digits all did. :wacky:

Just the thought of playing God of War as anyone but the God of War doesn't sound very appealing. I never played the handheld titles mainly because I'm not that immersed in the series but also because I feel like there's already enough with the three main titles and the PSP spinoffs make it feel like it's heading into too much. Once a game gets to the third in it's series it's hard to keep going without it being viewed as 'milked'. And if they're struggling with where to take Kratos at this point then it's better to just quit here I think.

Start a new series based on this same theme if you want but not with the God of War title. I'd feel much more comfortable buying that...

After doing some searching to see what systems it would be on, I couldn't find anything that said it would be on a system other than PS3, so I'll have to concur with this. If it does become a multiplatform game, then I'll simply move it back. But for now, lets move it to Playstation. :lew:

There’s a new God of War set to come out, only this one you may not be playing alone: as Official PlayStation Magazine sets our sights on multiplayer.

God-of-War-4.jpg

Much of modern gaming is based around the principle of getting online, talking to your friends and interacting with them… and then occasionally making them look like chumps. It’s become a staple of gaming that if you’re going to make a game work, you might as well throw in a multiplayer portion as well, just to make sure the title has an extended shelf life and more of a social aspect.

That’s why more and more long-standing single-player games and series have started to show up with multiplayer options, such as Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. However, this year Assassins won’t be the only ones playing together online: the Gods will, too, in God of War 4.

This is according to the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine, who write, “Kratos is on his way back to consoles, and his next adventure is set to feature multiplayer.” This seems to support previous rumors, spread by magazine PSM3, that said God of War 4 could arrive in September 2012.

Originally, the God of War series was supposed to end at the conclusion of God of War 3, yet Santa Monica Studio swore it wouldn’t be the end for the battle-hungry Spartan. Since then, we’ve seen Kratos in the latest installment of Mortal Kombatand his own PSP adventure, God of War: Ghost of Sparta. Yet aside from blatant tourney violence online, Kratos has been a solo-act all his career.

So if the rumors do end up being true, and Kratos does end up having a multiplayer element in his fourth console installment – which could be cooperative, versus, or both – how will that affect the overall tone of the series?

Given the nature of the design that Santa Monica Studios have put into the series so far, it seems like multiplayer may hurt God of War’s overall gameplay, if not implemented in an extremely creative and inventive fashion. The impressive (and addictive) multiplayer in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhoodmight stand as a good example.

As more information shows up, we will be the first to let you know the latest God of War 4 news.

What do you think of adding multiplayer to the God of War formula? Would it be better to keep the series single player only?

I cannot read your italics font, and that color just makes so much more harder to read it.

But yeah, GoW4, very exciting. Actually, not anymore, for me anyways, I've lost my interest after finishing up the second one. The third had fun re playability, but the story is butchered into pieces and I don't even know what's going on anymore.

Rumour: God of War IV to feature online co-op

PSM3′s reporting that the unannounced God of War IV will feature an online co-op mode.
Spoilers for God of War III below.

gowiii.jpg

The UK mag, which reported in April last year that the sequel would launch in 2012, said it will have an online co-op mode featuring Kratos and his dead brother Deimos.

The full rumour, read in its latest issue (via Sillegamer), says: “Why is it hot? It’s bringing double Kratos to the series. GOW4 was confirmed to PSM3 mid-2011 by a reliable source, and rumours point to a multiplayer twist. Mad idea? Online co-op with a (possibly) dead Kratos and (very) dead brother Deimos teaming up to escape the afterlife.”

In March 2011, developer Sony Santa Monica posted a job listing looking for a “senior online programmer” to join the GoW team.

The franchise’s last big release was God of War III in March 2010 for PS3, with spin-off Ghost of Sparta coming out in the tail end of that same year for PSP from Ready at Dawn.

Update

God of War IV Confirmed by Composer

There have been numerous rumors and reports about the existence of the next game in the God of War series over the past year. While Sony continues to go about its business without confirming any of it, as you would expect, one of the composers working on God of War IV has confirmed the game does indeed exist.

The resume of Timothy Williams was discovered by Siliconera to contain a listing for God of War IV, described as an upcoming game from Sony. This isn't a matter of someone typing "III" instead of "II" or some other honest mistake, either; while Sony would only issue the typical "no comment," Williams did tell Joystiq the listing was not a mistake. He noted he is "working on it in the capacity of orchestrations and some additional music" but pointed out Tyler Bates is the game's main composer. The resume, and for that matter his entire website, has since been removed.

Word of God of War IV was first reported almost a year ago when a source told PSM3 the game was on track to be released in September 2012.

Prior to that, God of War III had been called "the end of the trilogy" but not the end of the series. Besides the three main console titles, there have also been a pair of PlayStation Portable games which were ported to PS3 in high definition this past September as the Origins Collection.

Going forward, God of War III director Stig Asmussen hoped there would be more time in between releases in the series.

"I think there comes a time when to maintain a high level of quality... the bottom line is you can't get burned out, and the source material can't always be the same," said Asmussen prior to the release of the third game.

The most recent original releases in the series both came in 2010 -- III was released in March and Ghost of Sparta in November. An IV release anytime this year wouldn't exactly fit in with the schedule Asmussen would like to see. However, a new game could be different from previous ones in that it may include multiplayer.

Last year Sony's Santa Monica Studio was looking to hire a senior online programmer for its God of War team. PSM3 recently reported on a rumor that the game would include multiplayer co-op, a possibility that makes a lot more sense than some sort of competitive multiplayer mode. An addition like that could do a lot to keep the series fresh, as Sony isn't likely to be interested in shelving the series Metroid-style while it's still selling very well.

Retailer lists God of War IV for February 2013 release

Reliably leaky South African retailer BT Games has opened pre-orders for the unannounced God of War IV.

The vendor was responsible for leaking Mass Effect 3′s multiplayer and the Jak and Daxter Collection, and Joystiq reports it bases its information from distributors.

BT Games has God of War IV down for a February 2013 release.

The almost inevitable action sequel has turned up multiple times over the last few months, most recently via Future Shop, Mighty Ape, a composer’s CV, and a report of its possible multiplayer.

Rumor – Shaky cam footage claims to be God of War IV tease

PlayStationgang has gotten a hold of what it says is the first shaky cam footage for God of War IV.

demios.jpg

The tease looks like it was shot behind-closed-doors somewhere, yet we can’t confirm it’s legitimate.

This is just the latest rumor for a fourth installment in the works at Sony Santa Monica: South African retailer BT Game posted a pre-order page for the unannounced game which it claims will release in February 2013.

It has also popped up on Future Shop and Mighty Ape, and it has been listed on a composer’s CV. There’s also a report floating around out there stating it could possibly contain a multiplayer component.

Make your own judgment call on the video below.

Thanks, absolutezero.
