I am about 25 hours in, and whilst I have enjoyed the game on it's own merit, as a sequel to FFXIII the question I keep asking myself is WHAT IS GOING ON?

The game is such a massive departure, you can barely call it a sequel.

From the opening WTF sequence with Lightning, to... well everything, I just don't understand it at all.

To me the plot just feels incredibly unfocused, it's all over the place. The old areas you go back to, and the occasional meet up with characters from XIII are cool, but other than that, I feel really let down by the game as a sequel. The characters were the only thing I likes about XIII, and not an awful lot of them was seen in the follow up.

I do enjoy the gameplay a lot more, but I guess this is the flip side of the coin for the XIII "arc"

FFXIII had the story, FFXIII-2 had the gameplay, both have what the other does not.

If there is to be a XIII-3 then I hope that they can combine the two, to good effect

I rekon it's a GOOD thing that it can barely be considered a sequel to FF13. The mythos of the Time and Space, makes this game so interesting and bizarre. Recently, an announcement for the final installment in the FF13 series is to be released in 2013 titled, 'Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13'. Apparently, Lightning will be the sole and only playable character in the game. It is set 100 years after 13-2 (I think) and in a world called 'Novus Partus'. The game will feature a timer in a HUD of some sort, where the world will end in 13 days. The world is divided in 4 areas, connected by a monorail, transport through which will actually eat up the remaining time you have in the world before it ends. Sounds interesting.

i will have ff 13-3 when it comes out and people will say that they don't like it but hey i will so bring it on

A sequel should be a sequel. A spinoff should be on handhelds. If this so called sequel feels like a spinoff it failed miserably imo. Why release it on console?

lol I dont understand SE. Type-0 should be console game. FFXIII-2 and LR handheld!
But yeah who the hell am I im nothing lol.

FFXIII-2 made sense to me. What else could they do with such an storyline/ending other then milk it..
*Wonders if people followed 13 or just played thru it.

13-3 I'll most likely buy outright. So I see where john coming from. Just not a LE purchase. Get it cheap months later since it probably wont be popular to Square Enix Fanboys.

Anything Final Fantasy is a good time waster. :awesome:

TBH I didn't really focus on Final Fantasy XIII-2 that much. I was too busy drawing sexy perverted Caius fanart and imagining what spending the night with him would be like. :gasp:

Took the words right out of my mouth :awesome:

There was no feasible way to carry on FFXIII, though: it ended. There wasn't really any room for a sequel: for all of its faults, FFXIII was a standalone thing: you could watch it from start to finish and not be left wondering what the hell happened to so-and-so, or what came next. It was a closed-book, happily ever after ending, and that was that. There was nothing for a direct sequel to address, making it utterly pointless to have one...so they just made a standalone sequel that in itself is utterly pointless, because it shares FFXIII's trademark of shit characterization, a nonsensical plot, and some of the worst gameplay the JRPG genre has ever seen. About the only thing that XIII-2 did right was Caius, and even then he didn't have anywhere near as much focus or impact as he should have. He was wasted on that poor excuse for a video game.

XIII did not have a proper story, and XIII-2 did not have proper gameplay, although I will say that the first game should have had everything that XIII-2 had in it that XIII didn't...which isn't much, but it probably would have made it slightly better than what it is. Really, all XIII-2 shares with XIII are its characters and its flawed "gameplay" which has been slightly tweaked and had a ton of gimmicks that have absolutely no place in a JRPG tacked on. God only knows what they're going to do with a THIRD game; about the only thing that CAN be said is that XIII-2 does need closure, so it might not be a complete and utter waste of space...although when XIII-2 itself was a waste of space, it's a bit difficult to argue that line of thought. If they scrap EVERYTHING in the gameplay, it might turn out passable, although the fact that it's stuck with the same characters - whose stories were told in their entirety with the first game, really - will always weigh it down.

If you can answer the question of what the hell is going on with Square Enix and their whole "Lightning Saga" thing, then you have remarkable insight into how their minds work...and for this, I would weep for your soul.

I'm finally giving this game a chance after having it sitting on my shelf for months...I was too scared to even try it after that monstrosity that was FFXIII. But like you, I've found myself enjoying it purely by forgetting that it's even an ff game!
Anyway, I am having the same issue hahaha, I have no fucking idea what is going on. I'm only 12 hours in and every time something happens I am like 8( wtf. I'm just going to enjoy the game play I guess.

Actually its reverse. Xiii focus was on story xiii-2 was on gameplay

Hmm, a good way to understand whats going on is comparing this to the movie Deja Vu, and possible The Time Machine(either version).

I was the same way. But so far XIII-2 has been worth the money.

I'm not Lightening fan but whatever. And Noel is a great character.
