I have three favourite writers:
Hunter S. Thompson: Best know for his book 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', this writer claims to write journalistic accounts of events. Only catch is he often uses so much drugs that the reality he describes probably isn't the real course of events. He uses a lot of references to American (pop) culture, adds interesting side stories and has a style of writing and word use that I really like.
Haruki Murakami: This Japanese writer mixes up some fantasy elements in most of his novels, which mostly take play in modern day (60's-now) Japan. Although a lot of his lead characters look a lot like eachother (probably partly auto biographical) each book has a lot of interesting characters, plots and events to make it interesting till the last page.
And my third fav writer is Chuck Palahniuk. Palahniuk's books often show the 'underworld' or outcasts of the modern American society, like brutally scarred topmodels, a journalist for a lousy magazine or a scammer who works parttime in a historic amusement park. He has a very typical style of writing and subjects which make his work really stand out between other writers. His best known work is made into a film, Fight Club. If you like that movie, his other books are highly recommended!
