Your Country, what would you change?

What would I change, what would I change. The party system for one I would abolish entirely to stop the "brand warfare" between Republicans and Democrats. I'm sick of it. From now on people would just run without any of these parties getting any say. I would also make sure to push the US to the 21st Century and get rid of everything that's preventing it from joining other Countries into that Century. Religion wouldn't be able to hold back Science, gay people would be able to lawfully marry throughout the nation and put an end to this whole "you can do this in that state but not in this state" that never made any sense to me from the get-go and I would make it illegal for people to flat out lie in ad campaigns like they did during Prop 8 and Prop 19 in California.

I come from America, and I would change everything. This country was founded on God, not christianity, but God, our supposed creator. And I say supposed so I don't offend anyone and since I'm only human...I don't truelly know how we got here. But from what I've learned, God was the foundation of this country. But more or less, this country used to have some honor and integrity too, but that all changed...So, if I were to change this country, I'd bring her back to her old glory days. When Honor and Intergity meant something to the average american.

I come from Singapore.

But I can't say I fully embrace that fact, especially with the many kinks in our societal fabric. It looks beautiful on the surface, but is flawed underneath. Well, we are a First World country... Our economy is exceptional, especially so in the South East Asian region. We have low crime rates, we're multi-racial... We're an education hub... We're this, we're that.

Oh, sorry. We're many things, it seems. But really, in my honest opinion, we are, really, a jack of all trades, master of none. Now at this point, I didn't put much thought into this, but the only area in which we are 'masters', would probably be water purification - fueled by our need for sustainable water supply, but that's another matter altogether.

We're too many things. And it seems to me this attempt to be so many things leads us to fall flat on our faces.

I look around me. National Pride? Superficial. Language? Weak. Lifestyle? Detestable, to me.

But really, if I had anything I really want to change, that would be the National Pride.

Just less than an hour ago, I was on Garena (Anyone else there?). Now, in the Singapore server, there was this really massive argument for goodness knows what. Being curious, because this argument was particularly heated, I joined in. It was a petty quarrel between this guy whose username goes something along the lines of 'IamKoreanla' - if I'm not wrong.

Well, that username does suggest something, no? What were they arguing about?

Heh. That guy above. He was calling all Singaporeans Dogs. I'm Singaporean too, so that makes me a dog as well, based on his words. Right. I was somewhat ticked, though I guess I was more matured than before. I watched the argument develop further. They' were already going all CAPS, and it was quite amazing that vulgarities hasn't surfaced yet.

I didn't need to wait long, but it mostly came with how bad Singaporeans were. He was virtually cursing us all to death, that we were stupid...

... And he was Singaporean himself.

This sentiment has been lingering around us for a really long while now. In fact, some of my friends were even saying that they will definitely not want to live in Singapore when they grow up. Thinking about it, I realize I might be the same as well. I feel no true sense of belonging. I'm not honestly proud of my culture - or at least, not to the extent that would see me gladly sacrifice my life in protection of my country.

Worse still, I see that my opinions are shared among many peers I know... Which is somewhat scary for the country, isn't it?

So yeah, I would definitely change the amount of nationalistic pride amongst the people. At this juncture, it's pathetic beyond pathetic. That argument I witnessed was an easy testament of that.

No, no, no ,noooo. Seculism. That's why the US rocks. It was NOT founded on any religious principle , purely humanist ones.

I come from Jordan, I'd really change a lot of things there, like the e-states, roads, bridges systems, I'd like to have absolute order, you go to any place and you HAVE to stand in the line, if you don't stand in the line, enjoy a night in prison, maybe you will learn.

I'd ban ANY religious views government-wise, any government that has religion in it is fucked up. <_< Probably, be a bit more understanding and let the people vote in a fair way for who to represent them. I'd stop being so scared to dig out the oil we have here, I mean somehow it's like ALL the countries around Jordan have oil except us.

I'd support patient's health, insurance is a really fucked up system. =/ I mean if you don't have an insurance and you're on the verge of death, they won't treat you. What fucked up system is that?

I'd apply execution order in this country if a big crime were to be committed, serial killers, rapists. Really, I can't see why these sick people are to be left alive. =/

I'd ban smoking in ALL public areas even the streets, but to consider their feelings, would place a closed booth here and there for smokers to enjoy their time but there's no need to harm the others while they are doing that.

Would put a fine on throwing litters on the streets and what not.

Also, I'd put a law to place everyone who gets in a religious conflict in jail for a few days, like go on walks "Burn this (insert a religion name) people" and whatever, also respect other religions' holidays and days of saddness.

Yea I know I take a lot of rights from the people. =P Though, to hell with it, people misuse their rights a lot, someone needs to sit them straight. Freedom of Speech right doesn't mean you can bash everyone, don't abuse the right in the wrong way. -.-

Id do all that i can to stop immigrants moving here, no more immigrants taking all the houses etc. Next anyone found to be in this country illegally or has in anyway frauded the benefit system would be sent home immediately, no appeals.
Benefits would be looked over, no more lazy cunts claiming when theres nothing wrong with them. Id also stop aid going to countries like africa and pakistan and use the money to help my own people.
Muslims like those ones burning poppies would be removed from the country aswell.
Id also give the police more freedom. The ridiculous laws in this country limit what they can actually do legally. I would authorise the use of excess force if needed and make it easier for them to arrest people without requiring evidence. Prison sentences would be longer. I wouldnt bring back the death penalty but there would not be seperate jails for peadophiles and rapists.

This is a pretty loaded question. I personally think that one person dictating the laws that'll affect a population of 300 million (USA) is walking the line of a totalitarian regime, so I don't really think it's a great idea to begin with...but I'll make a suggestion anyway. :D Well another point...I don't think I'm really equip to rectify a lot of the problems we have without potentially making things possibly worse, but again...I'll mention one of the things that I think the gov't (state and fed) should try to focus on a bit more.

Education reform. Not really for higher education but rather targeted at primary/secondary schools, and I don't mean just injecting $$$ into the current system. There needs to be an actual long-term overhausl of the current system. The teachers are unqualifeid (I'm sure ther are some teachers who browse this forum so I'll give the little "imo" disclaimer), the method of teaching should be altered a bit (to something more effective as per younger kids...lectures and tests don't work till you're older really), the curriculum could probably use a tweak or two (e.g., incorporation of some big issues of today like poly sci 101 in high school so students can actually vote when they turn 18), etc... But the beginning might be with some investment into preliminary research about some of the best ways to fix these problems. A lot of the big reform issues are left to NGOs at the moment. Well at least in my state.

The big ticket item is changing the current view of what school is and what it represents. Most kids look at school as a requirement and pipeline for a future job to earn some green, but that's demeaning the actual enlightenment that knowledge can have on an individual. Wealth as measured by dollar value of assets is a real misnomer, because the real wealth is what's inside your brain, how this changes your perspective on life, and how this can be harnessed for a more transcended purpose(beyond just earning $$$). But this'll require a whole culture paradigm shift, which would go outside the bounds of the current question into "what do you think should change about people." But that's just a pipedream thought in itself (since I'd have to be God or something to effectuate this change, but then there'd be the additional moral implication because I'd compromise an individual's ability of "choice" by just alterting them...that's not what I want), so it'd just be waste of time to go in that direction....that kind of thinking lead to the defunct socialist system...well I got side tracked but fuck it, I'll post this anyway, because I think it's probably more interesting than my thoughts on education reform.

tldr, and answering the actual question: One of the things I'd like is the gov't to focus a bit more on education reform. This could potentially have a positive impact on multiple problems that our nation faces today. It'd be like killing (or wounding if you want to be accurate) not 2 but possibly 100 birds with 1 stone.

You are aware that the Scots are immigrants from Ireland, the English, immigrants from Germany/The Netherlands and the Welsh from Iberia? The worst thing about the UK is chavs blaming all the country 's problems on immigrants while shaking in fear that every stranger is a terrorist or pedo. Glad I moved to Canada, love my country, hate what the bigots have done to it and what it TRUELY stands for, freedom and tolerance.

The only thing I would change about Australia is the way our government thinks.
they're all about 'freedom' and yet they want to control what we look at on the internet or which kind of video games we can buy etc. It's annoying and we are turning into a nanny country.
I'd also change our immigrant law. Yes we were all immigrants but we're becoming over populated and immigrants aren't obeying our laws and we are just allowing it.
