You like horror games?

System Shock 2

You like Dead Space? You like BioShock? You like Doom 3 (god forbid)? The System Shock series is the inventor of the plot-driven horror shooter. And the second game specifically is a forgotten classic. The Cyberpunk themes mixed with horrific environments and heavy PC RPG gameplay makes it a big favorite on my list (my sig graphic is for this game, after all).

And yes, if you noticed a similarity between System Shock and BioShock's title, BioShock is basically a remake, changing the Cyberpunk elements to Steampunk and changing the setting from spaceships and space stations to an underwater city in the '50s and '60s built upon Randian principles that fell apart at the seams. BioShock isn't quite as nerve-wracking and skin-tingling creepy as System Shock 2, but it is also quite fun and is the easiest way most people can get a hold onto the feel of System Shock 2.

This game really gives you the feeling of being utterly alone, despite having help via PDA Radio that's always out of reach. And it seems to always know how to give you hope in finding more survivors, only to dash your expectations.

I've been reading different reviews from System Shock 2 and it seems to be pretty scary.

I'm too chicken shit to play to any horror games. I mean, I can't even play resident evil games, and my 9 year old brother can. I love to watch peope play them, but I can NEVER play any.

I love playing horror games. I like that chill when a zombie jumps out from no where and you start cursing like crazy!

for you guys that love rpgs and horrors,i can only suggest fallout 3,its a first person rpg, with survival horror aspects, sometimes i got so scared of ferral ghouls popping out of nowhere and attacking the crap outta me when i turn around,i run under my blanket, grab my baby daffy duck doll, and beg to god that it never happens again and ill be a good boy,now you tell me if thats normal for a 15 year old boy to be doing

I have to agree in suggesting Fallout 3, though it was never really scary to me. I guess I'm used to the setting, after having played Fallout 1 and 2 before. But, for people new to the Fallout series, Fallout 3 has some really creepy and unsettling stuff from a moral standpoint, which I'm not going to ruin; So go out, get it, and play it already!

I know a lot of people may bash it for 'not having a plot' but it actually has a great journey, and in my opinion, the best RPG experiences are a great journey that develops your character(s) and their moral sensabilites, and maybe causes you to think about your own while playing. Fallout 3 is a thinking man's RPG. As opposed to those 'Role-playing Games on Rails' you all love so much where the characters are completely detached from you, so you're never on the same level rationally/emotionally.

i agree,i got sad when dogmeat died, but i had the puppies perk,so its good, but people complained about it getting dull after your level capped out,but i dont care,i mean, why you play a game just to focus on the level, and i like how even though bethesda bought over the rights,i liked how they kept harold in the game,he was in fallout 2,but i never saw him in 1,but upon meeting him, theres something you would have to do tat would make you sad, because hes a long running character in fallout, but,i still have tons of quests to do,and the point lookout dlc will freak you out, but, you guys should pick it up

Woooo! Dead Space! Shotaro, I played the entire game by myself and only played when it was night time and everyone was in bed. The game was INCREDIBLE! One of the few games I actually was driven to reach that 100% mark. Impossible was a bit of a drudge through, but the difficulty definitely added to the atmosphere since most of the "horror" was gone by that point (Playthrough #3 <.>)

I havn't played ALOT of horror games, I could count all of them on one hand, Like Dead Space, Manhunt, I can't really count Resident Evil as a horror game, but if you do, that's another one. I played the first F.E.A.R. as well, but I think that's as deep as my horror games go, though. All of them, however, have been absolutely incredible (with the exception of how Manhunt ended).

I have NEVER been able to play Silent Hill in the dark. It scares the crap out of me, and I still don't like playing it alone. Too scary :gonk: I'm a chicken, but seriously, it scares me. Games like Resident Evil, not so much. I'm okay with the zombies and all that, in fact, I LIKE shooting their heads off. Zombie killing is fun :ryan:

OH. I remember when I was little, there was this game that my dad used to play, and it scared me senseless. I don't know what it was, but there was a little boy and a dog and a big shadow thingie on the cover. That's so vague of me, but I can't remember the name. It was so scary when I was six years old though :gonk:

It all depends. If the horror is based purely on blood and gore then no. If you're just talking about games that use other things like suspense or surprise to scare you, then I'm okay with them.

As a film example, Hitchcock's horror films were mostly propelled through suspense, whereas a lot of today's horror films are pretty much just giant bloodbaths.

Personally, I like to draw the line between "horror" and "sudden".

For me, a lot of horror games use the sudden factor (i.e. FEAR series) to scare the player. However, there are some diamonds that produce themselves amongst all the sudden moments (Alma in general [plot driven stuff]).

My personal favorite mixture of these elements are found in the Condemned series.

Don't worry, the guys talking over it make it funny and less scary.

Yeah, I like horror games to a certain extent. At one point I was practically obsessed with Resident Evil. But, after a while, I started getting all paranoid when I was at home alone. Even got nightmares, so I kinda had to stop. I'm still fond of the horror games, but I just can't play too much anymore.

I'm waaay too chicken to play a horror game. The only horror series I have is Fatal Frame.XD

My thing is I LOVE them, but only if I'm not playing them. With horror games, just like horror movies I like to watch others play it, rather than me. You give me the controller and something scary pops up, I will SCREAM and throw it into the air.

I like horror games because they engage you in a way that other games cannot. A good horror game should create a genuine sense of panic and should keep you on the edge. But it's not enough for a game to just be scary. Obviously a game needs to have good gameplay, story, design etc.. In my opinion a horror game needs to effectively in combine the horror element with some of the things I mentioned in order to be successful.

I love horror games. But I don't like them if there's no point to the horror. In my honest opinion, a horror game needs to successfully balance horror/gore with a good story and decent gameplay.

Resident Evil, Siren, and Fatal Frame all do that exact thing.

Im werid with horror games. The ones Ive played are the old Res Evil and Silent Hill series. Fatal Frame freaked me out too much. Dont play them anymore. Im more devoted to RPGs.

I like horror games if they scare me...which they don't so much anymore. The older Resident Evil games - and, to a lesser extent, their remakes - scared me senseless back in the day (the GC remake was perhaps the best, but that was partly due to the controls being so absolutely dire...not to mention the scarcity of ammo) but Resi 4 and 5 weren't really up to standard, asides a couple of memorable moments that really stood out: those chanting priests in Resi 4 (I really did NOT want to go into that castle, and the catapults made it even worse...), the Lickers in Resi 5, and just about every chainsaw-wielding maniac in both games. Particularly at the oil field in Resi 5...

I haven't played a Silent Hill game since Silent Hill 3, and from what I've heard I haven't missed much. I'm considering picking up Shattered Memories if I see it in the shops...

Dead Space was good, though...that really had me on edge. BioShock had its moments the first time around as well...although that was more freaky than scary.

Another good horror game I used to love was Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. That is the most messed-up game I think I've ever played, and I really, REALLY wish they'd incorporate some of the elements they used in that game into some modern horror games, or even a sequel. It was seriously disturbing stuff. Lose your sanity and all sorts of freaky stuff started happening to you...they could take the psychological elements so much further on a seventh-generation console.

So yeah, I guess I'm quite fond of horror games. Although they seem to have been severely watered-down for the most part these days, and are more action than horror...

I'm not really a fan of horror games.

I get nightmares all the time and playing these sorts of games would contribute to them greatly unfortunately. >.<

I like happy and positive sorts of games where there's only a bit of drama as opposed to scary, eery, gore etc.
