I have never used an esper in FFXII unless just to see what it looked like in battle, and ive played the game for a stupid amount of time. My qualms about the summons in FFXII are that they are useless, its much better to spend your Mist charges on Quickenings, which i call Random Overpowered Button Mashing Mini Game Of Death.
Also it would be very nice to see the old favourites like Shiva and Ifrit instead, i mean how cool would it be to see a huge Bahamut flying around whilst you fight stuff? I don't mean that we should reject new summons, its just the designs for espers were samey, they all looked similar even though they looked good, i think some of them were based on summons from the old FF games. But my nostalgia would like to see Ifrit, Shiva etc, purely because they are instantly distinguishible and familiar.

Well in theory you can still see them....as airships e.e;;
Which I found weird. I suppose they didn't want to leave them out of the game but turning them into airships? That's just plain odd to me o_O;;

Looking through the Strategy Guide now, it seems Zalera is probably the best choice of Esper when it comes to places where foes use alot of magicks. It's immune to every element, except Holy, which it absorbs.

When you compare that with Zodiark, he takes normal damage from all elements, except Holy which it absorbs, and Dark, which he takes double damage from.

So from a defense point of view when it comes to Magick, Zalera is a good choice. Obviously when it comes to sheer power, Zodiark wipes the floor with Zalera (e.g Zalera's attack power is 62, Zodiark's is 201, MAJOR difference)

Having this Strat Guide has made me look at the Esper's differently, knowing all their strengths and weaknesses etc. seems to give me more incentive to use them.

Yeah you pretty much summed it up for me yet again, I agree that I would've wanted to see some old summons that would be sweet.
:P

But on the subject, some of the later summons you acquire are pretty powerful like Zodiark and Chaos. :laguna::tifa::squall::cloud:

Oh my, espers sucked arse in this game!

What ticks me off is that you spend forever trying to kill these insanely hard beasts, Zodiark for example, and they take soo long to kill, making you think they're gonna be bad-ass, and then they suck. The first time I summoned "the almighty Zodiark", he was ko'd pretty much instantly -__-

Like Del boy though, the only reason I even bothered getting the espers was for the challenge. You certainly don't need them to win the game or anything.

I was the same as Del Boy and ~Lighting~, I collected the espers purely for the challenge and merely getting them. I miss the summons, they were classics and made final fantasy games enjoyable. You had your old favs.

yea the espers were such a waste and honestly i regret even buying final fantasy 12 i enjoyed rogue galaxy ALOT more.

Why is everyone acting like the "old" summons have been away from the series longer then is shown? They were away for ONE game (judging by the mainstream series, not by spin offs/sequels..). Judging by the looks of XIII, you're good old favourites will be back, including a morphing Shiva >_>

Espers in XII were useless, I agree. They consumed a lot of MP and then died pretty quickly. You could, either, fight alongside them and watch their HP wither away ever so hastefully; stand back and support them with Protect and the like. It was very annoying and a waste of time. Fighting against them was brilliant, fighting along side them was just plain suckish.

Even if the classic summons, such as Bahamut, Shiva, Ifrit etc. were in the game, it wouldn't have made a difference, the battle system would still be the same, so the whole summoning experience would be.

I Havn't gotten any 'Espers' yet. I'll be playing tonight again, so I'll mabey find one then?

There a few that you get during the story, the rest are optional.

It may have made the experience maybe alittle better? Seeing something familiar perhaps? I would have liked my classics thrown in, even though the system was bad.

Maybe.

My main dislike of the Espers is the way they look. The animation is so crappy. Zeromus and Exodus look absolutely terrible. The only one's I like the look of are Zalera, Adrammlech and Ultima. Zodiark I'm undecided with, not really sure what to make of him looks wise.

Actually, mentioning Ultima there, that's something I liked, having Ultima in my arsenal, instead of just fighting and never seeing him/her again. She's pretty cool. Annoying fight though, with the constant switching of what you can and can't use during the battle.

I wasn't disappointed in the style and way to obtain summons or how they looked and such, I was just disappointed in how they were utilized.

WHen you wanted to bring in a powerful attack from a summon, it almost completely depleted your MP stock and when the summon left you were elft with almsot no way to use magic and all you could do was sit in a corner and eat crayons while the enmey pumbled your face in.

I went to go play Omega Mark XII the other day and it was taknig forever, so I brought out Zodiark cuz I knew I was going to die soon. Zodiark didn't even get off one hit. Gay.

I liked the way in which one had to obtain them, the battles w/ each different summon were wickedly awesome and challenging. I, however, didn't use the espers in this game simply because i prefer to use my characters and feel that using a summon takes up too much MP and party-time than they are actually worth, no matter how strong their limit-breaks are.

I also loved the fact we have to beat the Espers in order to obtain them, however using summons isn't worth as time is very Limited and most Espers are uselless, except the Last Three.
I only use
Zodiark
on powerful Bosses/Rare Monsters to take them away loads of HP, other than that i don't pay any attention to Summons.

Later stages of the game you can easily buy 99 ethers, so when you summon let your Esper do all the work while spamming ethers on yourself, or if it's an esper which only takes up 1 mist charge, just attack away you'll get your mp back.

So by time the Esper has gone, you've regained your mp, dealt abit of damage and are ready to carry on hacking away.

I know all of that, i beat the game two times and know pratically everything.
But thats not the case here, there is no usefulness on casting Espers, they take 2 Party members and are much more weak than two Same/Near Level Party member.

Also i rather spend Quickenings than summoning Espers, some Esper's Quickenings are hard or risky to try, i mean who is going to attack himself and try to get 10% of their Max HP for a mere attack?

SE Failed on FFXII Espers, the only real worth is
Zodiark, his Final Eclipse can take away 50,000 HP
, that breaks the Damage limit, has no waiting time and its easy to trigger.
