Just wondering, where did the names for the World of Balance and the World of Ruin come from? I can't seem to find anything in game that uses these names, and yet all over the internet and in my strategy guide it uses these names.

Well how far are you into the game? World of Balance refers to the state of the world before some shit happens and it all goes to hell. Won't say what to avoid spoilers at least. As for the World of Ruin it refers to the state of the world after said event. Hope that helps.

The actual names are never officially used in the game, except for in the world of ruin where they say "the world is in ruins"
But as far as world of balance goes, it wasn't used in the game only in the strategy guide

I've beaten the game, but going through it again. I know what happens, so don't worry.

And so are the names just a consensus among people really?

Pretty much. It's a convenient thing since the game was "divided" the way it was.

Yeah the names don't necessary relate to what people actually called their planet, but more of the characters (or us the gamers) using as terminology to describe the 2 different worlds and the impact Kefka's actions had on its state. It's just an easier way to describe "then and now" kinda like years BC and AD in terms of time for us.

The naming seems pretty much arbitary tbh. The world of balance reflects the "good" world and the world of ruin for the "ruined" world after the apocalypse.

Final Fantasy 6's World of Balance and World of Ruin to me are similar to Dragon Warrior 3's World of Light and World of Darkness

FF6 World of Balance = DW3 World of Light

FF6 World of Ruin = DW3 World of Darkness

Difference is that you can return to World of Light in Dragon Warrior 3, but in FF6 you are stuck in World of Ruin as the WOB turns into the WOR!
