I'm just wanting to get some other opinions about things I inevitably think about when playing these games:
1. Who's the best fighter? Cloud, Squall, Auron, Basch, Cyan, Steiner, Cecil?
2. Who's the best martial artist? Tifa, Zell, Amarant, Sabin, Yang?
3. Who's the best mystic? Vivi, Terra, Fran, Tellah, Lulu, Rinoa?
4. Who's the best summoner? Rydia, Yuna, Garnet?
5. Who's the best soldier? Kain, the horselady from IX, Steiner, Basch, Celes?
6. Who's the best thief? Locke, Vaan, Zidane, Tidus, Rikku?
7. Who's the best ninja? Edge, Shadow, Yuffie?
8. Who's the best pirate? Balthier, the man-she from V, Setzer?
9. Who's the best shooter? Vincent, Irvine, Rosa?
10. Who's the best healer? Banon, Rosa, Garnet, Yuna?
11. Who's the best gearhead? Edgar, Cid from IV, Cid from VII, Rikku, Cait Sith?
12. Who's the best misc. character? Gau, Mog, Umaro, Gogo, Edward, Quina, Selphie, Quistis?

Feel free to add anyone you think matches the description that I haven't listed.
To be clear, I'm not asking who you like the best or who looks the coolest. Those are fine points, too, but I'm asking who's the best.
I'll bet there's an existing thread. But I done four searches and came up with nothing, so there!
For my money:
1. Auron, or Cyan
2. Sabin, but I like Zell best
3. Terra
4. Rydia
5. Kain, or Celes
6. Zidane can't be beat in the acrobatic sense, but I still think Locke's better. He made it through the Phoenix Cave by himself, fer pity's sake!
7. Shadow. Notice the period. Period. Need convincing? Listen to his song.
8. Balthier, being one of the best characters yet.
9. Vincent's impossible to beat here
10. Yuna. Banon's a poser. And he goes on to become Gogo after suffering amnesia in the breaking of the world.
11. Rikku, but I like Cid Highwind.
12. GAU! while Edward cries in a corner.

 

[Megalo]

Cloud's the best fighter, he is just as strong as Auron and he is solid with magic. He is a little more versatile than Squall, but not by a lot.

The best Martial artist IMO was Zell as he had the best combination of speed, vitality and strength.

Mystic? I will say Fran simply because you can build her up any way you like (like any party member of XII, but I digress)

Summoner is Yuna, seeing as you can build up and control her aeons, unlike other summons from previous games and afterwards.

Soldier is Steiner, Vivi's magic gives him an edge most other soldiers did not and he is one of the best tanks in FF history.

Thief is Tidus (shouldn't he be considered a warrior), his overdrives and time magic come in extremely handy in a slow strategic game (FFX).

The best Ninja is Rikku with her mix capabilities combined with her speed, plus she's the one who customizes your weapons.

Pirate, im not too familiar with this class, so I will simply say Balthier because of his wordplay, nothing else.

Shooter is Vincent, it's simply that effortless cool, though his limit breaks help out.

The best Healer is Eiko, potions and mega-potions alone aren't enough to keep her away from my party.

Gearhead is Cid from VII, he hit damn hard and put Rikku's machina genius to shame.

Misc. character? dunno.

Tidus is speed-based, used light weapons and has techs classically attributed to thieves (steal, taunt, flee, etc.), so I included him.

I would say Bartz, but he's not on the list. (I think)

1. Who's the best fighter: Either Squall or Auron
2. Who's the best martial artist: Tough Choice between Zell and Sabin. Zell was definitely more powerful but that was mainly due to FFVIII's junction system. Sabin was powerful too and he just had the classic FF levelling system to support him. So I can't exactly say who the best is.
3. Who's the best mystic: Probably Vivi for me.
4. Who's the best summoner: Yuna
5. Who's the best soldier: Out of the characters you provided, I found Celes to be the most useful.
6. Who's the best thief: Zidane
7. Who's the best ninja: Edge
8. Who's the best pirate: Faris
9. Who's the best shooter: Barret
10. Who's the best healer: Banon was useful when I got to use him. But as a whole, Yuna was better.
11. Who's the best gearhead: Definately Edgar, his tools are teh pwnage.
12. Who's the best misc. character: Not sure about this one.

 

[Donald Trump]

1) Squall or Auron, but Cloud and Cyan aren't very far behind.
2) I think Zell is the most powerful, but Sabin is more versatile, he can target more than one enemy and he can heal.
3) Terra for her transform ability and Lulu.
4) I haven't played IV or IX so I have to say Yuna
5) Celes, Runic ftw
6) Locke, but Tidus would be the strongest
7) Shadow, he has a dog and a daughter
8) Balthier or Setzer, I like Setzer more, but he doesn't get anywhere as much screen time as Balthier, if he had more, I'd say Setzer, but he doesn't so they're more or less equal
9) Irvine
10) BANON is probably the greatest character the world has ever seen, however Yuna is better.
11) Edgar, I like Drilling people
12) Selphie or Quistis, Selphie has The End and Full Cure, Quistis has Degenerator.

3. Who's the best mystic? Vivi, he's a black mage innit!
4. Who's the best summoner? Garnet/Eiko
5. Who's the best soldier? Beatrix - she makes Steiner look like a kitten xD
6. Who's the best thief? Zidane
7. Who's the best ninja? Shadow
8. Who's the best pirate? Balthier
9. Who's the best shooter? Irvine
10. Who's the best healer? Yuna (Eiko was better than Garnet for the record, garnets white magic was shit)
11. Who's the best gearhead? Rikku
