Who else thought the romance was overplayed?

I agree with the above poster about FFX. Very corny and annoying, to me.
In FF7, though, there was a much darker undertone to the story other than romance. It was made clear early on that Tifa had feelings for Cloud. Since they had been childhood friends, it wouldn't really make sense for them to have some dramatic romantic love scene. They already knew each other, so by the end, they both acknowledged this I believe.
Aeris and Cloud on the other hand, I don't really get; Aeris seemed like she got to parts of Cloud that maybe he didn't really know were there, or that had never been experienced before. So losing Aeris was clearly big for him as he must have had feelings for her by then.
I think it's very balanced and the displays between Tifa & Cloud are somewhat more realistic, than say, kissing underwater for 10 minutes while a horrendous japanese song plays in the background.

This pretty much sums up my sentiments. The "romance" felt totally disconnected from the rest of the story and what was going on, as though it was forced in after the game was already finished. Nothing I saw outside of scenes specifically included to imply a relationship between characters made it seem like those characters had any interest in each other.
As far as the romance in most FF games, I don't understand the insanely shy and awkward interactions. For characters that fight powerful monsters and wield magic weapons, I'd expect them to gather up enough guts to talk to someone of the opposite gender that they like. Then again, maybe they only get so many points at character creation, and all of them go into Saving the World while the Talking to a Person that You're Interested In skill is left by the wayside...

I think that the corny romance died with disc one.
I don't really remember romance afterwards, it started to get really action-y toward the second disc, what with giant weapons, nearly dying from hypothermia, earthquakes and getting trapped in a crater - there really wasn't time for more "romance" and so there wasn't any.

Overplayed no. Heavy handed at first maybe, but after that it sort of disappears. So I would say that it was underplayed for most of the game.
Of course FFVII wasn't really about a love story, but more about redemption and such s it makes sense that it's not as romantic as games that are based around the theme (FFVIII and FFX).

I think the romance was kind of subtly done, there were moments of tension and some cute, jealous moments in disc one (which I found adorable actually, but that's just me 
). Towards the end I thought that Tifa's feelings really evolved and that was really well done!
She started the game with this sort of confused crush for Cloud, then she got to actually know him and I think she accepted something very important at that scene really near the end (the one scene in the ps1 version where she randomly has a mouth?!) where she sleeps with Cloud in front of the Highwind.

Yeah, it was subtle in compariosn to FF8 f.e. and for sure not OVERplayed [ altough I would really like the idea of Aerith's and Tifa's date on disc 1, not only Aerith OR Tifa's date - the two are interesting to watch, add to the character developement and it dissapoint's me, I have to choose only one, it could be a good idea to show how Cloud is traped in a REAL triangle, or show his incapacity to choose between the two girls only to see one of them die, this would be good in my opinion

It could have been more romantic because the romance in it wasn't too bad overall. Sure they had a love triangle and all, but it wasn't like Aerith was going, "GET OFF MY MAN!" and Tifa doing the same to her. In fact, it was just here and there that Tifa would kind of hint she liked him and Aerith asking him if he had a girlfriend.

Overplayed? I don't think it was "played" enough lol. There was very little emotional involvement with the characters. Every chance at romance was acted out like kids in grade school. "Do you have a girlfriend?" "Is she your girlfriend?" "Cloud...what is she doing here?" etc, etc. There wasn't any big romantic scenes, save for the night under the airship with Tifa, but even that was subtle and underwhelming. No, I wish there had been more romance lol.
...Not really. The romance wasn't really all out there. It was light, and not all in your face. I guess Tifa was a little annoying with Cloud, but other than that, I didn't really see too much of it.

I think it is overplayed by some fans.
Maybe SE realized that the romance was not a big part of the game and many fans wanted so badly romance that the prequels, sequels and other "official" statements by SE try to make the romances look larger than they were in FFVII.

I didn't buy into the whole love story in FFVII at all. I think Cloud and Tifa were more of the friends who grew up on the same street, built forts together and went sledding on snow days, and sat at the same lunch table together at school.
Cloud and Aeris to me is where Cloud finds out who Aeris is and her past and see's how innocent she is so when her life is taken from her, he rises to arms to avenge her death, like he would with anyone that was like Aeris. No love connection made. I think he's got more on his mind than romance in the game. Aside from the Carnavel date scene, I hardly picked up a sense of intimacy going through the game.

I don't see FFVII as an overly romantic games,it's just that the fans make it appear that way since there the huge debate of whether it was CloTi or Clerith.But generally speaking,disc 1 was more light-hearted.You got to know new characters,had more fun times etc.After the end of disc one it gets pretty serious.No more fun adventures,monsters awake,Midgar is destroyed,even the map theme changes into one more depressive.I don't even think that the romance is that highlighted.Like I said you can see it in the first disc but then it's more than just revenge and sadness.It involves the whole world and life itself,identity etc.

In fact the romance is a negative aspect in most of the games because they are not needed to the plot and they make the story weaker. In Final Fantasy, for example, most of the romances are not well-developed or have deeper meanings: just the pretty girl develops a crush on the hero and they end together (or not really in FFVII case).
I admit the romance thing is a cool thing for 10-year-old players, but to be obsessed about it and even creating a rivalry between the ones who support Cloud with Tifa and those who support Cloud with Aerith after all those years is simply something I can't understand.

Romance has never been done well in games. Final Fantasy VIII did it very well, in my opinion, and X's underwater make out scene was actually pretty awesome. VII not so much, but it's a lot better than romance nowadays. I'm sorry, but all these romances in Mass Effect and Dragon Age are...fake looking and sounding and...the underwear is...ugh...

Mass Effect's Miranda is ugly in game, but have you seen the trailer/cinematic CGI at the beginning of the game? She's hot as hell. Yuna was hot as hell in the cutscene just because it was CGI and not in-game graphics.

Well, there was a dating scene, but it was part of the game in order to find out what the hell was going on. But Arieth liked Cloud, and he did promise her a date, but it would have been better with out the dating or romance to be so exclusive.
