For a final fantasy game? Medieval or Futuristic?

i prefer medieval - because it just adds to the whole Fantasy feeling lol and i like the games where they focus on the swords and magic.

but i love it when they mix the two genres together - like having futuristic settings but Medieval weapons - and so far only 3 FFs have got the thumbs up for doing that with me lol VII X and XII ^_^

your thoughts?

I prefer a medievil feel in FF games although when they get the mix just right it's always the best.

Usually it doesn't matter to me too much. I've loved the futuristic ones (VII and X particularly) and these are two of the best in the series IMO. I think by making the world more futuristic allows for more freedom in the story, as it can be easier to explain something strange away and allows more creativity on the part of the writers
That said, some of the ones with an older feel to them, like VI and IX are also fantastic games too. Even though with a world like this, the freedom stated above is lost, we tend to get more stunning maps and towns/cities. They're usually larger and have a more interesting cast of NPC's in them I've noticed (at least for me).
I think the mix that was attempted in FFXII was a brave attempt on SE's behalf, and they pulled it off well. It does seem odd to see the futuristic air ships in an old-themed world but it still worked well for me. I liked it

Hmm, I'm thinking I love medieval setting more. I mean, I love futuristic setting too, but I agree with you when you say that the medieval setting adds the whole FF feeling to it. Like IX, for instance. That was quite medieval. Castles, princess, etc.

Now, mixing them together is a good idea too! Hmm, what would VIII fall under?

Well, flying schools, gunblades, the city of Estahr and an airship that can also go into outer space? I'd say VIII is futuristic. Also, if you remember, satellite commnications had been dead for how ever many years in FFVIII

When I think of the word Fantasy, I am instantly made to think of the whole FFIX setting. Probably as really to fantasy as I can imagine and it always comes to mind right off the bat. I love the castle settings and the different continents, etc...

Medieval for my preference.

has to be medieval setting. I always find it strange how in games set in the future they still use swords and spears??????? it makes it more believable if its set in the god ole days.

I prefer midevil. It adds more the the fantasy feel that I love. I do like the futuristic one too, but sometimes it feels a bit odd when swords are the best weapon in the game when they have guns and huge cannons and other stuff like that.

I'm going to have to say medieval. I love the whole medieval genre inside, and outside my games. I love the feel of wizards, and dragons, and knights, and princesses, magic, etc. Everything just feels "right" to me in a medieval setting.

Now, on the other hand, games like FFVII and X hit the nail on the head when it comes to a futuristic standpoint. I didn't particularly care for XII, it was a good game, but not great, but it had nothing to do with the fact that it was more futuristic. As far as that goes, even XII did a good job. It is strange to see swords and spears as normal weapons in a futuristic game, but just as in Star Wars, I'm glad that they decided to go that route. Nothing feels more in tune to me than a nice, pretty, sword. Gunning monsters and what not down is fun, but it belongs more in a FPS in my opinion.

Now, mixing the two isn't a half bad idea either. I'm not entirely sure that SE could pull it off though. Square by itself, before the merge with Enix, would have been able to pull it off. But with Enix's apparant lust for money over quality in their games makes me wonder. I don't know how much of Square's decline (it's gone downhill in my opinion) is actually due to the merger with Enix, but I have this strange feeling that Square is the part of the company that strives for excellence in everything they do (they publicly apologized for the mishap in graphics translations from PC to PSX in FFVIII for gosh sakes!), and Enix is the part of the company screaming "Ship it now! Who cares what it plays like, it says 'Final Fantasy' and therefore people will buy it!". Maybe it's just the new phase of leaders working their way into the company that are moving it in a direction that I don't particularly care for, but... ok, I'm too off topic now.

Overall I would have to say stick with a more medieval feel, and explain away the oddities by putting it on another planet. After all, who says that airships or teleporters didn't exist in the medieval times on Xclakjdf?

Midevil. It adds to the mystery and goes with the magic and hand-to-hand weapons of Final Fantasy.

If it was futuristic, more gun type stuff and robots would be more appropriate, I think.

I don't know...I guess I prefer sort of a blend of the two, like FF VII. Sure, the cities and stuff were definitley industrial and futuristic, but everything else had a very medievil feel to it.

I think that the medievil settings tend to be more beautiful, majestic, and have an all around magical, nice feeling to them. Where as the futuristic ones tend to be more dark, bleak, and depressing. So I guess it depends on what I feel like at the time.

I would have to say that, in general, I lean more towards the futuristic settings. I'm not quite sure why, I just like it better.

I have to say I don't mind so much as to the setting of the game, if I had to choose I'd perhaps lean towards medieval. I say this because all the games so far of that type have featured some machinery or technology in some way, so you get a complete package.
