Playstation Which PS3 should I get?

Okay, so I'm thinking of asking for a PS3 for Christmas. I'm hoping to play the Uncharted series, Final Fantasy XIII Verses, The Last Guardian, Metal Gear Solid 4, Nino Kuni and Valkyria Chronicles. However, if Chrono Cross comes out on the PSN, I will also be downloading that.

My main question, then, is how much space do games from the PSN need on the HD? Is the 80GB HD (which costs about £120) large enough to hold a couple of PS1 classics, or would it be better to spend £50 more on a 250GB preowned console? :ohshit:

I've looked on the PSN itself to find the size of the files, but can't seem to locate the info. I'm hoping someone who has a PS3 knows a little more. :updown:
 
I'd imagine you would be fine with 80GB, I have three PS1 games saved on my PSP and that only has either a 4 or 8GB memory card. Most of the space is taken up by having to install games onto the hard drive. I have maybe 10 PS3 games installed on my PS3 hardrive and have only used up 60GB. Plus you can uninstall the game without losing save data
 
Generally, more space is better, but if you're thinking of getting a pre-owned. DON'T. You'd best spend about 70USD (idk Euros) more to get a brand new 160GB with a warranty plan.

I think a new 160GB PS3 is the same price as a 250GB PS3 preowned.

Why shouldn't I get one preowned? Are they prone to crashing/breaking etc?

Also, why would you HAVE to install games on the HDD? Isn't that just so they run faster?
 
Well I don't think pre-owned consoles provide a warranty plan. And also, if someone has returned it, then that probably means it might have some sort of problem. '

Well I'm not saying you don't have to, but I'd be a little bit more cautious and wary of Pre-Owned.
 
Pretty much all games do it automatically, if they don't your PS3 would be crippled with monstrous loading times every few minutes. It's unlikely you'd play ten games simultaneously anyways, maybe three or four at most. That's still 20GB of space right there
 
I'd only buy a pre-owned console from a shop, and they have to test them here to ensure they work. If the console had a problem, I could return it within 30 days; perhaps a little longer since the game shops may provide a 1-year warranty on pre-owned consoles (can't remember :S).

If 80GB COULD be too little, I may go for the new 160GB (my pre-owned PS2s both smell of cigarette smoke from their previous owners which is a LITTLE offputting ;)).

Thanks for the info so far, guys! I'm still curious about the size of the PS3 versions of PS1 titles... or are they the same size as those you can download for the PSP?

Edit My Manic: Ahh! I see. Well, I am guessing a 80GB console will only come with 50GB of actual free space... Electronics use a fair proportion of space on the basic software...
 
The PS1 classics are the exact same as the ones on the PSP :P They share the same store, the PS3's just has more in it.
 
Oh awesome. So either size should be okay. :updown: Now I just need to weigh pre-owned against new. Certainly worth considering! It's a shame the games on offer with the new consoles don't include titles I want to play. -_-
 
You lose 11GB to the system I think, at least that's what's on mine

I assumed I got the full 160, which means the 10+ games I have installed have used less than 49 GBs as I've just a scratch over 100GBs left. Not all games install and the ones that do take up 3-10 normally

Basically, if you are getting the system just to game, 80GBs would be fine

The problem with the 1 year warranty on used items is, let's say a system has a three year lifetime. You buy one just under two years old that's pre-owned, and you're rather fucked
 
the biggest ps1 game i seen on psn is 1.7GB (that was Final Fantasy IX, VIII and VII) but most ps1 games unless there are on more than one disc shouldn't be more than 700MB sooo you should be ok with a 80GB model as long as ur not planning to get ps3 games via download

buying preowned is fine i swear places like game, gamestation and cex as well as amazon you get a 1 year warranty on products that are preowned soo you should be fine on that as well :)
 
I wouldn't recommend any less than 120 GB.

You'll get to where you want to buy more than just that, trust me lol. I've got a 250 GB right now and I've got about 80 GB left.
 
Get the 250GB. It's only £50 more for an extra 170GB of space so it's worth it. Playstation 1 titles aren't particularly large in size, I've got Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX and they're only around 1 or 2GB each considering they have four disks and Crash Bandicoot 2 which is less than 400mb. A lot of games have rather large installation sizes though -- Gran Turismo 5 is about 8GB PLUS all the downloads updates takes it's well over 10GB for one game. Slims are less prone to overheating too.

250GB.
