I haven't played World of FF. I think FFX hd would be a good one to start with. The battle system is pretty easy to learn and the game still provides some challenges at times to keep things interesting. The voice acting wasn't my cup of tea (don't know if they changed it at all with HD) but it also has Auron and I can't really argue against that.
X is definitely the better option, because World is more of a love letter to the series as a whole. You won't really be able to relate to a lot of what it's trying to do without first playing some of the other games. X is definitely mechanically simpler as well, and while it's not easy, it's easy to understand.
I would say it depends on how long of an investment you want, time wise that would go to FFX. Though if you want something more cheerful and quirky then go with WoFF, it's a kick back to the series as a whole and you will see bits and pieces of FF1-XIII in there. It even pokes fun of the games itself by referencing to other scenes in some of the games like the cringe worthy FFX laugh scene. With also some decent endgame content and if you don't mind the pokemon crossover aspect of capturing your foes and raising them to fight beside you as well, WoFF is more enjoyable and a huge nostalgia trip.
I have both games, and enjoy different aspects of each one. But if you haven't played Final Fantasy before, I would suggest trying out FFX. It gives you more of a feel of what the different Final Fantasy games in the series are like, and I think you would appreciate World of Final Fantasy more if you have played some of the other games first.
Honestly both are very newbie friendly. I don't recall any major spoilers being revealed in WoFF so all you need to know is that a lot of the characters are returning characters from the various main games and spinoffs. FFX is also a very good entry point to the series as well so I'd say it all depends on which one you want to play first. Of the two games though I enjoyed FFX more but WoFF is still very much enjoyable too.
If you don't mind digital the Vita has access to a few FF games to choose from due to it being backwards compatible with the PSP. FFIII and FFIV Collection are on there. I can't speak for FFIII yet but FFIV is well worth playing for sure. FFTactics: War of the Lions is also a solid choice if you're into Strategy RPGs.
