Hi guys,

I want to get back into the FF series so tommorow I am going to go get my PS2 out of the attic, dust it off and then I have 5 games to choose from:

FF7
FF8
FF10
FF10-2
FF12

I have to say I disliked FF12 so much it just didnt have a good storyline for me so which one do you think i should replay first to get me back into the good old final fantasy spirit? I have only completed 10 out of all of them so maybe I should start with one of the other ones?

Any advice would be great!

I'd say start with FFVII - My favourite is FFVIII but FFVII is still great and is probably the best one for diving back into the FF experience.

My best advice would be to play them in order ;)

I'll go ahead and suggest VIII. Whilst I do feel that VII is good, I think that VIII has a bit more to offer - a complicated love triangle, plenty of drama, a lot of shocks and surprises, etc. But in the end, it's up to you. All those games are probably some of the best in the series.

FFVII would be my suggestion also.

It's a fantastic game and hopefully will wet your appetite for FF again.

If not FFVII, then FFVIII for equal reasons, although I do prefer / have fonder memories of FFVII myself.

You seemed to dislike FFXII, so I don't think starting with that one would be a good idea in case it puts you off FF.

You also say you played / completed FFX in the past so unless you want that feeling of nostalgia playing it again I would suggest you give the others a go first.

As for FFX-2... It's risky. Some people like it. A lot more hate it. I would not play this game until you are sure that you want to give it a go / already know that you like it. That way if you don't like it, hopefully you wont blame the whole FF series for your dissapointment.

Well the most weirdest thing has happened...

I thought the PS3 wasnt supposed to play PS2 and PS games? Well I put in FF10-2.. and it couldnt read it.. put 8 in and the Playstation logo appeared but the game wudnt load but Seven works perfectly?!

Looks like I might start number 7 tonight then :P

Oh yeah PS3 in the UK isn't fully backwards compatible, so it will play PSX games but not some/all PS2 games. As such FFVII and FFVIII should work on it but FFX, FFXII and FFX-2 might well not.

You should start with VIII, VII is good, but VIII has a lot more for you to get and play for. Its got everything, as Rosalie Hale said, a complicated love triangle, plenty of drama, a lot of shocks and surprises.

So, start with VIII and than I guess VII, than X/X-2 and than XII.

For some reason 8 isnt working on my machine so ile have to wait and play that one, ive started 7 again...

The graphics are so old school.. has this ever put you guys off when replaying?

It does have some effect I think after playing the likes of FF10!

The graphics are not as good as later installments, yes. But don't let that effect your judgement of the game. I guess be grateful that the game wasn't as linear as later installments. So it fails in graphics (even though I personally like this graphical style a lot) but I promise you it makes up for it in all other aspects.

However, if you feel the graphics will put you off, then I suggest you try a later game. However, as you have completed X and hated XII that would only leave VIII which you say doesn't work. :sad2:

I wouldn't really let graphics affect judgment of the game itself. There are a lot of other elements that make the older installments great to enjoy. But if that is something that puts you off, then VII, and maybe even VIII, aren't really the installments for you. And seeing as you don't like XII, that really kind of narrows it down to X and 10-2, doesn't it? I wouldn't really recommend 10-2, it was a pretty bad installment. But you've completed X, so it just depends on how much that factor matters to you.
---

If you can look past the graphics though, I'd recommend you'd stick through VII.

The game throws you into the fire a lot quicker than the others you mentioned (followed by VIII), so you might find that alluring.

The "Materia" of VII is more simple than the "Draw" system of VIII, allowing you to adapt to it easier and kind of smooth your way into it. It's also a very enjoyable system as well.

And as far as the story, I don't see how it would offer any less than VIII. The love story/"triangle" in VIII is clearly better - that being a pretty big subplot in the story. But VII has a number of major character and plot twists in the game that, if you can really grasp or understand them, are very captivating. Twists or plots that are foreshadowed to lure the player on, vs the more abrupt ones presented in VIII. Most of VII is filled with drama. There's a brief stint in the game that may get a bit weary when you're trying to track down Sephiroth, but the collisions with Shinra, character subplots and development, and explorations should be enough to keep that part interesting.

Both games certainly have their own elements and directions though, and a lot of it is a preference thing. But I wouldn't say it has less to offer in terms of plot and such. To each their own, however.

So yeah, if you could get past the graphics thing, VII should be a brilliant game to stick by. If not, go with X, assuming that VIII still won't work.

First off I want to say congrats on getting back into FF! And second I think in my honest opinion that you should either start with FF8, or FF10. I think that 8 is one of the best FF's that Square ever put out, I loved the storyline, the battle system, the characters, even triple triad was fun. So I think that would be a wise choice to start with. On the other hand FF10 is just as awesome, for all the same reasons. Plus if graphics are a big deal then FF10 would be the choice for you.

Ahh you guys make it so hard.. lol.. im obviously torn between 7 and 8 now... I am going to put them both in a hat and then take one out and thats the one ile play lol..

I love the idea of the love triangle in 8....

But I just know how awesome 7 is supposed to be particularly as you get more into it!

Right Ive decided...

Im going to play 7 first and Im going to complete it this time!!!

VII or X if it was me probably X because of the story and graphics and gameplay :D
