Personally I'm not worried for Versus XIII's existence as a whole just yet. Getting there? Yes. But it hasn't been long enough to worry yet. Here's why: quite simply, the game was announced and alpha level development was previewed to generate interest for the game (obviously that much was successful). However, SE wanted to focus on XIII, and so despite Versus being announced in 2006, full production did not begin until 2011. In other words, it has been a side project until just last year.
A bad move? No doubt. If they didn't intend to enter full production until last year, they shouldn't have announced it so early. But everything happening how it did, I find it perfectly reasonable that the game isn't released yet. There's little question that the new Tomb Raider game will be released, even though the E3 2011 demo was the same demo as had been shown behind closed doors since late 2009, and though the E3 2012 demo showed us some new footage, it promised a 2013 release. That's a fair amount of years to develop just one game. Say Versus follows a similar pattern. That would mean the game doesn't even need to release until 2014 and it would be a perfectly normal development period. Do I wish it would come sooner? Absolutely. But I'm not going to give up all hope just because it hasn't released yet or been extensively demoed recently.
I also think Versus will be a PS3 title. If Sony sticks to their guns about the 10 year lifespan of the PS3, which they've showed every intention of doing, the PS4 won't even be in consumers' hands until 2016. That would allow plenty of time for Versus to come, even if the PS4 arrives a little early.
So there's my thoughts. Some mistakes were made, but as of right now, there's not a lot to worry about. Not saying we won't ever have anything to worry about, but the time has not come yet, and after two confirmations this year that the game remains in production, I'd like to think that time won't ever come.
