Is it just me or am I the only one that just gives any character whatever weapon ups their attack power? Works out for me just fine no prob. If a sword has Vaan's attack power at say 40 and a 2H spear makes it go to 50 I always go with the spear I never really seen any kinda pattern or weapon limit with characters besides the Licenses but you can get around that with some good ol fashion monster whoopin. So idk is there a set weap that is "best" for a character or does it even really matter? Long as I have the licenses and it is stronger than what is currently equipped you bet your ass I will equip it. Gotten to Famfrit and beat him pretty easily this way so I can't be completely off can I?

It all depends on how you want to go about playing really. If you want stronger magic, then you'll have to sacrifice Attack Power in most cases.

Only thing that really sticks out to me right are Katana swords. These have a higher damage the higher the MP, so they suit Penelo the best, as she has the highest MP in the game if you level her up the same as everyone else.

I, personally like to keep one person at range though, so equip them with a bow, so they are out of the way of the fight and can cure the other two members in between attacks, and keep them buffed up, without taking much damage.

Yes yes the different weapons' damage depends on ur characters as well as the enemy stats. E.g. Hammer class weapons are based on ur characters luck, staffs r based on magical defence, swords r based on ur characters strength, etc. Basch is the best person to have with a samurai sword, genji gloves and genji armour as it gives him consecutive hits and all that stuff.

I find that Balthier is best with gun, Fran with bow and arrow, Vaan with sword and shield, Penelo with staff, and Ashe with an axe and shield

Think I got it pretty much set up everyones "class" per say yourself kinda like an even more open sphere grid more or less with that kinda concept to haev an effective team anyway

Anyone who has a katana and the genji gloves will have a better combo rate. Penelo is the better option, as katana's work hand in hand with magic power, and she has the highest in the game, where as Basch has the least.

That is correct. Give Basch the Tournesol and watch him wreak havoc on monsters.
Alternatively, get out Fran, Ashe, and Penelo (best with Magic), cast a Reflectga on the whole party, and have everyone cast Scathe on themself. 9 hits of Scathe= 89,991 damage= enough to kill The Undying in 3 hits. Pay attention to stats on a character. It really makes a difference.

I tend to equip characters with the weapons they first join the party with, for instance My balthier always has a gun equipped whilst my Panello is always equipped with Daggers. this works for everyone asides Ashe, but thats only because i equip her with the treaty blade and use her to gain LP later in the game when im LP farming.

there is the occasional boss where i will equip different weapons for different people I.E last time i fought Mateus i was forced to give Basch a different weapon as i had him equipped with an ice brand and that would only heal mateus T_T.

I didn't know any particular characters were stronger with particular weapons. So I didn't put much thought into what I gave them, I ended up giving Basch a katana, Ashe a sword, Vaan a spear, Balthier a gun, Fran a bow and I don't remember what I gave Penelo (mind you I didn't use Penelo Fran or Balthier at all really).

Just for the record...
Vaan specializes in Strength
Balthier " " Speed
Fran is All Around
Basch specializes in Vitality
Ashe and Penelo specialize in Magic

You can pretty much make anyone into a mage or a tank or a damage dealer, support class/healer etc. on XII.

Using the armour/helm and weapon that works with whatever the preferred class is easy enough with the License Board.

But obviously, they all have their own areas that they'll do better in if you play to their strengths more.

Vaan is a great tank, as a character he was lacking a bit, but in a fight, he's VERY useful.

First playthrough I just shoved swords and sheilds on anyone - my main characters taking priotiy and working down the list, I never really thought abou distributing weapons according to class.

I'm still sort of the same on this play through - Bashe has Zodiark, Vaan has a one handed sword and a sheild and Penelo has a 2 handed word

Ashe, well, she just gets whatever, I barely use her unless Im having a disaster and people are dead, so I guess she still has a deathbringer equipped

Fran has bow and arrows and Balthier has a cross bow - he does pants damage with it though, he is like 10 levels clear of Ashe and he does like.....fuck all damage, I really wanna keep those 2 ranged but Im fucked if I ever have the right loot to make anything better for him -_-

Best crossbow you can get is by stealing from a rare game in the Ridorana Cataract. The area before the Save Crystal with all the traps, kill all, exit, re-enter. It has an attack of 78.

I thought going into this game that I would evenly spread out my weapons and make each character their own class with their own distinct weapons; nope.

Once I got into the game, I basically gave my top characters the top weapons overall with Attack Power like ya said. I think my main exception to this was when I kept the Masamune equipped even though it was not my top hard hitter. It's quickness and combo hits made it more powerful than other hard-hitting weapons I had in my inventory.

I'm the same as Busta. But I think (and I may not be 100% correct in this) that strength is also taken into account for katanas besides magic power. I did the one hour Yiazmat challenge and both Balthier and Basch with Bravery, Berserk and critical HP were dealing 9999 damage to an exposed Yiazmat with each hit. Besides spells like Curaja still heal a lot even if it's Basch with a Zodiak Spear equipped. Even though some characters might have higher stats in an specific area, the difference wasn't very noticeable battlewise, at least for me.

I always went, in this order: crappy/mandatory weapons until the Tomb of Raithwall; three Demonsbanes at the Tomb; 3 Deathbringers from Ithuno and, finally; legendary/ultimate weapons.

The Demonsbane keeps you overpowered until you get the Deathbringers, at which point you become essentially invincible - a single-handed sword, with deathtouch and a power of 90+. This sword lasted me until the end of the Pharos (by which point I had obtained the Zodiac Spear) and, by this time, I was able to obtain the legendary weaponss (e.g. Excalibur, Ragnarok, Masamune, et cetera).

I've never bothered with anything other than swords, really.
