Walkthroughs? cheating?

Yknow, this is where I have to admit to the guilty pleasure of using a walkthrough. I've used walkthroughs on some of the earlier FF's. I didn't use one on my first run-throughs of 4 and 6, because I didn't have a walkthrough to use. FF7 or anything afterwards is so linear and straightforward, that you don't even need one!

In a way, it's being cheap, but not really cheating (unless you abuse it, that is =P ). Some games, I'd feel guilty if I did. Others (Dragon Warrior for instance), it'd be nearly impossible without one.

Why would this be considered cheating? Final Fantasy X-2 needs a walkthrough if you want that 100% ending. Generally you need guides for Very long rpg games. Final Fantasy is long but you should be able to beat one game of it without a guide. But if you want everything in the game get a guide. Like For example Tales series how would you complete the collectors book without guides. In my opinion a guide book is not needed unless you want everything. If you do have a guide dont spoil it for yourself!

hmmm

sometimes you truly need some help when your stuck. but using a walkthrough first time around really spoils the mystery and surprise that comes with the many secrets held in each title!!!

You could say that a walkthrough is both a destroyer AND a helper. It all depends on how seriously you take your skills. I am not saying those with a walkthrough is skill-less, but you kinda ruin a bit of the fun with a walkthrough. In other cases, a walkthrough will help you from leaving the game annoyed with the question "What to do now in the game?". It´s kinda both sides. There is no real answer. (from my point of view)

I try to refrain from using walkthroughs until at least the second play through. If you are a completist though, a walkthrough is almost essential. FF5 and the blue magic comes to mind, or things of that nature. Really, whatever you want to do to get the most enjoyment out of the game is fine by me: If that means using a walkthrough, go right ahead. I suppose I think that using it to ruin future plot points and ruin surprises for yourself is a bit silly, but again, it is all up to you.

I dont class it as cheating. A walkthrough is that; a walkthrough, something to help you go forward in the game, unlocking stuff, etc. Now as for actually cheating in a game, I use to do that with Tomb Raider, tekken, res Evil sometimes. But I wouldnt do that to an RPG. Theres no real cheating techniuque Ive heard of with RPGs. Walkthroughs are there to help you and I have to have a wlkthrough with most of my games because they are so big and new ones ar full f extras.

I don't consider guides a cheat but a tool. If you use them as a referance like when you are trying to get through a difficult part or 100% the game or hunt down that rare mark then they are usefull. However if youn use as a crutch so you don't play the game without them then there bad.

I wouldn't class it as cheating unless you're really stuck and don't know where to go next. I've finished all the FF games with the exception of XI and the ONLY time I used a walkthrough was on the first FF where you would exit a dungeon with a key item and absolutely no idea where to go and what to do with it.

No.

A walkthrough is what it is.

to cheat is to manipulate the game to make it suit you. Though walkthroughs are a bit of a spoiler, they're not cheats.

I personally use them for games I'm not very interested in and for things I don't know about and want to know about.

But I sometimes find myself needing them.... I really didnt ever want to touch one for Twilight Princess, but I have a horrible habit of being forgetful and forgot about the
Boomerang on the first stage of Zant's boss fight
... So I had to use a walkthrough or I would've never been able to do it. D:

fucking bastard

I only use guides or walkthroughs to find rare items and side quests. makes me think of the ff9 chocobo and stellazio hunt. most people would never find all those treasures on their own. really need to make a rare item walkthrough and side quests walkthrough only.

Nah using a walkthrough is difinitley not cheating its good for those times when you've tried everything and your ay your wits end.Plus there a lot of shit in these games to remember take FF12 for instance it contains so many stupid rules about where certain monsters will be and the drop rates of items its to much to remember all this stuff and maintian some kind normal life

Guides/Walkthrough

I tend to use them at times. When I get stuck, but I don't let it tell me how to play the game. I keep it at my side in case I need it, but I like to discover things on my own.

I don't think looking up walkthroughs counts as cheating, except if you follow the walkthrough religiously without putting any effort in discovering the game on your own (which raises the question why is the person playing the game anyway).

Some part of FF12 is impossible to find out on my own and I got a walkthrough telling me that "tracing sun's round" means that I had to spiral "the sun" and not just travel in circles on top of it.

I don't think a generalization could be made. I think it depends on how you use it/when you use it/what you use it for.

If you follow it religiously, then it's kind of ridiculous.

Personally, I only use a walkthrough so I can get a map overview for treasures. I'm currently doing that in IX so that I make sure I don't miss any of it's bountiful hidden gems lying around. But even then, I'll usually complete the place first, then check for assurance.

But I could also see someone using it when they occasionally get stuck. I remember playing TOS with a friend, and there was like one puzzle on there that was incredibly ridiculous for us. I don't think we would've gotten it if not for the walkthrough other than by guessing.

Walkthroughs get me through some sticky situations at times. I picked one up half-way through FFX when I was stuck in Malcalania Temple doing the Cloister of Trials and I just had noo idea, no matter how easy those puzzles can seem.

I've used them to get key items, figure out hidden secrets in games, etc. I never use it to read up on bosses or the story though. I like to keep that a surprise.
