I was thinking last night about ways to play FFVII diffrently and wondered about if I played through the game but give each character a Job/Class and only equip them materia that is relevant to thoughs Job/Classes.

E.G. If I wanted Cloud as a Paladin I would only give him Restore, Heal, Cover etc materia's. Or Red as a Black Mage would be given Fire, Bolt, Ice, Earth etc materias and so on.....

Do you think the game would be much harder this way? and what Jobs/Classes would you put the characters in and with what Materia set-ups?

I can't see it making much of a difference overall. The only difference being that you have to wait for a certain person's turn before you can heal/summon or whatever.
I like the creative freedom materia gives in FFVII though, so it's not something I'd bother with.

I usually create classes for my characters. Primarily I have in my average party:

Cloud: Summoner/black mage
Vincent: Green mage (status inducing)
Tifa: White mage/Monk (hp and mp materias)

It would be an interesting twist.

Aerith/Vincent - Summoner
Cloud - Warrior
Red XIII/Yuffie - Black Mage
Tifa - White Mage
Barrett -Archer type such as double attack and such.
Cid - Lancer
Cait Sith - Fuck knows

I'm just trying to sperse things up abit seeing as I've completed it many times using relatively the same sort of materia set-ups each time. Just wondering if it would be good using the flexability of the Materia system to actually restrict myself willfully to make things harder yet intresting.

Hmmm another one. Cloud as a Dark Knight, in his weapon; Added Effect-Poison/Seal/Mystify/Transform etc,...

By prioritising certain materia to a set character(s) you can get different characters to use certain materia for more strategic effect. Like a firaga-slow2-curaga sort of thing for instance.

I can't bring myself to stick to certain materia, I just love the freedom and flexibility. But If I had to have say what jobs my chars currently have...

Cloud: Warrior, he has mad attacks and tons of crazy power moves and stuff.

Tifa: Monk, She does massive damage as well, and has a lot of powerful moves.

Vincent: Sage, He is my summoner, white mage and black mage, so like in FFIII sage, he does everything MP related, including enemy skill.

The rest: I NEVER use them, they all have no materia whatsoever.

FFVII was the first RPG I played so i didn't do it. But know i sort of do that. Keep one charecter with Materia that doesn't harm your strength, HP (Cover, Etc). So i suppose that'd be a warrior. But i do that with 2 people and have the other charecter a general make. Fire , ice, Resore, Ramuh etc. So kind of jobs but not the traditional way

My Cloud is a warrior, has Death Blow, hit-all, etc.

My Tifa is my Mage, she covers Black Magic and White Magic, plus some Time

Vincent is my HP beast, I was doing a little experiment, and gave him all HP Pluses, by God, level 54, 7000+ hp

This would actually be qiute fun.
I'd give Cloud a warrior job and only give him Materia to increase his stats, like HP plus and MP plus.
I'd make Red XIII a Black Mage and only give him Magic Materia like fire, ice, bolt etc.
I'd probably make Cid or Tifa a White or Red Mage and give them power of healing and some black magic aswel. To be honest, I used more Items than Magic for healing near the end of the game, so White magic isn't too important to me.
Overall, Final Fantasy VII isn't really a "Job" game. It would be quite fun to apoint each character with particular Materia, but it wasn't really the intention of the game and I'd probably prefer to just do it normally!

I'm up to Costa Del Sol now and heres what I got so far;

Cloud as a Paladin for now. Restore, All, Heal and Cover.
Tifa as a White Mage for now. Restore, All, Heal, Exit, Revive and Shiva. May switch her as just a Monk type later....
Barret as a Blue Mage for now. Enemy Skill, Sense and Choco/Mog.
Aerith as a Red Mage. All, Restore, Heal, Revive, Lighting, Ice, Fire, Earth.
Red as a Black Mage. All, Lighting, Ice, Fire, Earth, Poison and Ifrit.
Yuffie as a Thief/Ninja. Throw and Steal.

I'm thinking of having Cid as a Dark Knight and Vincent as another Red Mage seeing as Aerith would soon bite the dust. Cait Sith might become someone who has many Command Materia's, just so I'm forcing myself to use him at least a little bit more than usual. I'm dividing up the summons between characters, similar to FFXII.

I must say that even though I've had no real trouble so far, the battles are taking abit longer and that certain other enemies do seem to be putting up more of a fight. It'll be interesting to see how I pull off Materia Keeper or Godo without everyone able to use Cure or Big Guard at will....

Personally I think its a good idea, having to wait to cast cure while all your charachters are pretty beat up makes it all a bit harder, a degree of skill comes into it then.........knowing when to use cure so that it is cast just when you need it.
Might give it a whirl next time I play.

Did everybody give Jobs to everybody. I tend just to use 3 characters throughout. The game catches people other charecters up level wise every so often.

Yeah but I'd get bored with just using the same three throughout. Plus they never get as high and when you do get forced to use the others due to storyline they can be quite lame. Like I never realy use Cait Sith anymore but that Bit in Junon on Disc 2, he always gets pwned by Soldiers:2nd.

Suppose so but i get by. Sitting training everybody up can get boring itself sometimes though

I haven't really spent time levelling. The only times I've wandered around fighting battles without intent of progressing story has been when I'm earning Gil. Buying lot's of Materia seems to be quite the expensive feat ^_^

Just finished the Gold Saucer and got my Buggy. Just back tracking and getting White Wind, Big Guard and Aqualung Enemy Skills and the Bolt Ring before going futher. Clouds level 20 and everyone else is 17 or 18 I think.

Yuffie - Thief

Cloud - Warrior

Tifa - Monk

Aerith - White Mage

Vincent - Summoner

Cid - Lancer

Cath Sith - Black Mage

Red XIII - Red Mage

Barrett - Green Magic / Enemy Skill

I think they're already skilled anyway, but this is what i'd think they'd be suited to.

Do you really get what in what you get out of spending time what you get spending time on levelling and customizing these charecters? Your optimum 3 is enought and has also served me enough

Yeah but once you've completed the game about 30 odd times, mixing it up a bit isn't such as bad idea. Playing with just three consistent characters is boring even if it is quicker.

Temple of the Ancients next. Clouds 28, Tifa's 24, everyone else is either 25 or 26. Spent a while getting Gold Armlets from Dragons up on Mt.Nibel, hense the level boost. Still I must say the game is now a lot harder. Materia Keeper actually owned me for the first time in like YEARS!^_^ Red Dragon and Demon's Gate I fear are gonna rape me till my rectum bleeds >_<

Some characters limit breaks are designed to work around a certain character class, like Aerith, she has healing limit breaks which go with white / black magic.

I normally use them like this -

Cloud - HP and Magic materia - so he has strength, HP, and magic.

Aerith - MP materia, and Black / White magic materia.

Barret - HP materia and summon materia.

The others, I don't use. But i find someone to fill in Aeriths gap.

It could be fun to create specific character classes with materia, but with materia you have the freedom to create your own unique ones ^_^
