Underrated Characters

If we are just talking about playable characters, then Cait Sith is the first one that comes to mind. Wakka does too, not because he is particularly good...but because he is painfully average, and in a game full of strong characters, people tend to get the misconception that he sucks.

I say that some underrated characters that are actually good were Barret, Kiros, Ward, Cid, Vivi(Maybe. I haven't played FFIX yet.), and Balthier.

let's see...ashe, wakka, garnet, rinoa...thats about all i can think of right now.

ashe- she's just as good as fran, and everyone seems to think fran is so great. there's not much of a difference between the 2, i always used ashe and not fran.

wakka- his attack reels are deadly, if you get him strong enough.

garnet- a great healer and her eidelons are much better than eiko's IMO.

rinoa- wishing star and invincible moon are key, and if you junction her right then she's a powerhouse.

People only like Fran cuz she's in leather bondage clothes, simple as that.

Garnet is way underrated. Personally, she's my favorite FF female character, and her eidelons are definitely better than eiko's (although summons in IX are kind of useless in general). Her personality was just so great, and i loved the fact that they made a lead female look like a natural girl (i.e. no gigantic watermelons hanging off her chest).

Quina is also underrated. He/she may be the worst looking character ever, but that frog drop of his can be pretty damn powerful, and he can be pretty bloody useful in Kuja's desert palace too.

Kuja is really underrated as a villian thanks to all the Sephi fanboys and people insecure in their sexuality.

Zidane is pretty underrated as a lead character. He's not a loner badass with a big sword that PSone generation kiddies grew up with, he's just a normal guy with a big heart and a weakness for ladies. I love him, he's actually a character i can relate to for the most part and empathize with. I cant very well empathize with a guy who's been pretending to be someone else so long he believes he is that someone else (cloud, for those of you who couldnt figure it out).

I would say Selphie, Irvine, Yuffie, & Kimahri.

They were all under-rated in my own opinion. Selphie was a really decent character to use.

Yuffie had great speed.

Irvine awesome Aim and Kimahri was very versitile.

Balthier, underrated? Far from it love - nearly everyone I have seen on forums LOVE this guy to bits.

Underrated? I'll stick with playable for now - Basch, Pennelo, Vaan, Selphie, Zell.

If I do non playable, I'll be here forever.

I think Wakka is extremely underated, he was my best character in ten.

Fran in FFXII, people never seem to talk about her.

And the obvious one Cait Sith, not the strongest of characters but has a nasty limit break.

okay I'll explain mine too.
Faris- Amano's favorite among his works. plus she's a pirate and I like her antics a lot.
Firion- (I mean in rereleases) nice character design. I like it a lot and I think he's as cool as Cecil, Locke and even Squall. it's just that FF2 is an early game so let's not expect much character development.
Maria- from FF2 also. not much char development but she is described in FFwikia as having a strong personality, she doesn't give up on problems easily. She looks like a younger Ashe to me, and I recognize her as beautiful as the likes of Rinoa and Yuna.
Leon- the namesake of Squall! I think he's cool and I know some fans of FF2 does. It's just that he's not well-known to many. we should not him for being the first character in the series with a dark personality. like the later characters Shadow, Vincent and Auron.
Garnet- same with the people above
Paine- a very unique female character in the series. people tend to overlook her for being a quiet type girl. not to mention the game she's in is overlooked as well. I think she's not as dull as people think. her serious and quiet personality sometimes work as comical relief. remember when she shocked Rikku and Brother by speaking in Al Bhed all of a sudden?

Very well said. You may very well be my new best friend on this forum. :)

Cait Sith is one of the most obvious ones. It's hard to appreciate the sheer power that he brings to the battlefield, mostly because of the other bad side effects --- think limits. xD

I'd say Barret and Wakka also, though I think it's because of their class and their long-range fighting tactics. I guess most people want to see fighting with swords, up close and personal, kind of deals.

Balthier, underrated? Far from it love - nearly everyone I have seen on forums LOVE this guy to bits.

From a guy's first point of view, Lisa. :monster:

I thought he ran like a monkey and looked like a white Usher, so I had underrated him because that is funny. But I have also heard things about him that are VERY SPOILERISTIC because SOME members don't know how to use spoiler tags because they r 1337.:monster:

Quina for me - must have bewildered a lot of people when the game first came out, and I know some hate him (or her or whatever XD). But I think he's a great addition to the game because of the oddness, not many playable characters like that in the series. And I did think he was actually quite funny XD

And to go for another FFIX choice, possibly Steiner. I enjoyed his character having to confront his oaths of loyalty to his queen as the game went on. Like Wakka he puts faith in the system and is knocked for a loop when the system turns out to be corrupt. Like Quina he could be very funny too though.

Haha, why thank you ^^

I've uh...never used cait sith. Ever. I never liked the idea of his slot limit breaks, i had enough of that crap with Tifa, and megaphones didnt seem like they'd be very powerful. Then again, i suppose that would be considered underrating him xD

I really liked barret, he was just as strong as cloud and his limit breaks were great (mindblow was especially useful). Wakka...i dont like him...i think the fact that he uses a blitzball as a weapon, has crappy hair and a bad Jamaican accent puts off alot of people. He is pretty useful against flying types...but thats about it. And tidus is so quick he can hit most flyers anyway.

Quina
The most underrated of all playable characters, I believe. However I'll base that mainly off skill and usefulness in battle. I've seen a frustratingly small group of people acknowlege Quina for his/her true potential, only because they bothered to actually obtain a few of it's Blue Magic. Dare I say it, but I find Quina to be the best character available for a large quantity of the game.

Kuja
So he wears somewhat feminine attire. Does this make him a bad villain? Does this hinder his ability to snatch his true villainous goals? Kuja accomplished more as a villain than a lot have ever done, yet people look past that and see the famous "man-thong." Pitiful people... pitiful.

Garland
Sure, he's not so great as a boss, but as a character he's amazing. His personality is trapped behind a wall of servitude until his dying moments, where he aids the only being he seems to have ever cared about. His appearance is pretty cool, his abilities are pretty nifty, and his role within the game is top-notch. Not the strongest, but by far one of the most impressive.

Seymour
Like Kuja, people are seeing past his aims and looking at his colourful attire. He became a maniac for a reason, and any person who was interested enough in the game would see that. I see him as a greater villain than Sephiroth any day.

I think I'll leave it at that. Although I've picked out mainly villains, the point still stands. They're all exceptional characters, and shouldn't get the bad reviews they did. Though their appearances could've been thought out a bit better. >.>

I would have to agree with Steiner and Quina.
Quina because everyone, well nearly everyone, seems to hate him/her no matter how much people make him/her out to be quite useful in battle. Otherwise, she's really great comic relief, and indeed helped push the story along.

Steiner because, well, most people consider him a 'tank' kind of character with not much other use. Well, considering the fact that he is a 'tank' it also helps much when he speeds the battle along.

Quina may look like crap, but it's USEFUL in battle. I mean sure, you can opt not to get him/her before you go to Gizamaluke's Grotto...but it's just plain easier having a fourth member in your party.

Steiner IS a friggin tank, and he owns. Both his physical attack and magic sword attacks are awesome. As for his character, i love it. He goes from being a narrow-minded, stuck up asshole to being an understanding, very loyal friend. It's a sign of great character development when you can go from hating a character to loving him.

I just thought of another sorely underrated character:
Tidus. People always complain about him being a whiny little bitch (and he is) and about his awful voice acting...but he's really one of the best characters in the game as far as the battles go. He's got really high speed, great evasion, he's the first to learn Haste/Hastega, and that Quick Hit skill of his does wonders. Auron is great and all, but when it boils down to it, he's slow as hell and has pathetic evasion. Take Tidus through Auron's grid and he'll be just as strong AND three times as fast.

Faris is definitely underrated. She's by far the most interesting character in FFV, but she gets an extremely minimal amount of time in the spotlight. Instead we get Bartz as the main character, and IMO, he couldn't have been any more boring. A wanderer with absolutely zero personality that just comes along with Lenna and Galuf (in the beginning) for the ride? I think FFV could've been a completely different (and IMO, better) game if more parts of it were told from Faris's point of view.

I actually used Wakka quite alot. He was actually a strong character and had a alot of accuracy/aim. He was a great addition to the team, IMO.

Rikku is underrated in FFX. Not alot used her. She's popular because of her looks and her acting. That's it.

No one really used her in battle, but I found her to be quite skilled. She was just as fast as tidus and take her aboard Auron's page and she'd be quite awesome.
