Twin brothers who left their mother's rotting corpse on the floor of their US home for three months have been charged with murder.

Police allege 48-year-olds Edwin and Edward Berndt left their mother to die after she fell in the Texas property in January.

The pair were arrested on Monday after police found their mother's corpse crawling with bugs on the floor of their home in Houston, NY Daily News reports.

Investigators said they went looking for Sybil Berndt after a neighbour told them she had not been seen for months.

When officers arrived at her house, Edwin Berndt tried to stop them entering, and only let them in after they insisted.

Police found Mrs Berndt's body lying face down on the floor, wearing a dirty nightgown that was pulled up under her arms and no underwear.

The brothers told police their mother died on January 10 after she slipped and fell while they were watching a college football game.

They said she was conscious and talking to them for three days as she lay on the floor.

The brothers admitted they did not give her any food or water before she died on January 13, the day after her 89th birthday.

The twins told police they decided to leave their mother's corpse on the floor because they did not have enough money to pay for an ambulance or burial.

While searching the house investigators found bank statements for accounts holding a total of $A670,000.

I found this very disturbing.

I don't know if the twins were living in the house with their mother or whether they just visited regularly, but surely they would have been annoyed with the smell of their mother's rotting body on the floor?

Wouldn't that be reason enough to at least move her?

I think it's weird how they said that the mother was talking to them for three days after she fell? Why wouldn't they help her up? It was like they wanted her to die.

The whole situation is just weird and disgusting.

One minute they say she died pretty much instantly after falling on January 10.

The next minute they're saying she was conscious for three days after and died on January 13?
 
I find it disgusting how they just left her there, after she not only gave birth to them, but also put a roof over their heads and fed them throughout their childhood/teenage years.

The way people are treating their own relatives nowadays is kind of disturbing, and this article proves it, although this isn't the case for some people, this is obviously the case with those two.

What i also find stupid is how they claimed "They didn't have enough money for an Ambulance" But they don't charge before they carry the corpse away (not sure if they charge afterwards, either).

I'd imagine it would be rude to ask for money for carrying a deceased persons to a morgue straight after entering the scene...
 
Ok this is a very intresting article and could be almost something like a mystery to be solved by all of us. First we need to know if there is a motive. Does the article state anything about whom that money belongs too? Is it the mother or the brothers. Also it would be very helpful if you link this article so that we may view it for ourselves to form our own ideas about it.
 
Rather disturbing, but unfortunately I've seen worse articles. The thing that really gets me is how they were able to put up with the smell. The smell of rotting flesh is enough to make someone throw up, and the two men were actually living in it. I've smelled it before and it was enough to make me gag, but that was in a controlled, sterilized environment. This is in Texas, where it's hot and humid. The smell of the corpse had to have been awful beyond imagination.

I can imagine one of the police throwing up a lung just opening the door. The only thing that bothers me worse than the concept of that smell is that fact that that their Mother's night gown was pulled up below her arms.

I don't even want to know what went on with that. :mokken:

That is rather messed up.

Reminds me of that book by the lady who wrote The Lovely Bones...something something Moon, where the lady killed her mother, and then left her in the house to rot. It was a good book, but I hardly expected someone to do it in real life.

And the smell...yuck. Much less the sight of a rotting corpse? Sick twins.
 
Oh my word. This is so disgusting. Why didn't they just take her to the hospital? I hope they didn't rape her.

That's just utterly sickening...I don't even want to think about what motives could behind such a thing. It just goes to show that the world is a scary place, and that there are a lot of messed up people.
