The Spirits Within [The Spirits Within] So who else wants to pretend this film never existed?

I saw this movie a while ago. It wasn't horrible but it was pretty boring. :/ I don't remember much from it. Square should just stick with making games.

What a disgrace to the Final Fantasy series. The movie LOOKED cool graphically, but had absolutely nothing to do with FF. I was so relieved when advent children came out.

This film was the most discaseful film under the final fantasy name i mean even final fantasy 10-2 looked better than this. i think they should get all the copies in the world and launch them in to space. i would say burn them but we got to look ather the enviroment. thank you for your time

I dont think it was a bad film at all. The concept was good, the CGI was breathtaking for the time (still is I think). But I was puzzled as why they stuck the FF name to it. That I definately didnt agree with. That is the underlying problem in my opinion, not that it was a bad film, but the fact it should not and was not a 'FF' film.

To be honest I dont know how they got away with sticking FF at the front of the title. But it certainly isn't a bad film

The movie was lame. It had nothing to do with any of the games from the series. They just pulled this one out of their asses and came out with shit (Go figure).

i thought it was rubbish, it was a sci-fi movie with the title Final Fantasy. There was just about nothing to do with FF, no chocobos, no magic, no similar naming nothing. It was just a sci-fi movie. They shoulda never made it imo

Well I generally don't see it as a bad film. Graphic wise it was outstanding, the phantoms were awesome too, however I don't see why it has the Final Fantasy title in it? Do you?

I mean it did contain elements of Fantasy, but if compared to Advent Children, or a story in a game, it is a failure. Well I personaly would say that they should have named it "Spirits Within", just that. And it would have been better, Not to quote someone:
It wasn't a bad movie, but it was a horible FF movie
So that sums it up I think.

IMO it was a poor excuse for a final fantasy film. It had nothing to do with the series, had no elements of fantasy, no magic except the spirit thingies and no swords (thats a big no-no lol) so who else just wants to pretend they never saw this movie?

How can you describe this as a "poor excuse for a final fantasy film" when one, to this date, had not been produced.

Furthermore the word fantasy refurs to "imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters." With that said just because its sci-fi like doesn't mean it does not encompass the word 'Fantasy'.

Though the movie did lack swords and magic it did contain some other key elements seen in other Final Fantasy games. I am only going to refur to some of the more recent ones.

They spoke of life force which, when thought about, is a lot like the lifestream from FFVII or the souls that are being transferred to the other world in FFIX (I forget which is Gaia and Terra...)

There were also guns which are in FFVII and FFVIII. Interestingly enough FFVII seemed to be the most popular game (and it had guns...), so guns are not exactly completely out of the question for a weapon category. Not to mention what they were fighting couldn't exactly be beaten by swords... I'm sure if they were beatable by swords they would have had swords in there. Sure they could have just made cool lightsaber type swords that can hit spirits, but that sounds really... retarded.

There was the theme of people saving the world. Thats in every final fantasy game ever for those of you that didn't realize. Sure its in a lot of things, but it doesn't change the fact that its being saved by a few young individuals, like other final fantasy games.. or all. Whatever.

The graphics were fantastic when it was released (and I dare say still are for the entire thing to be made entirely by computer).

How can someone honestly sit there and say this was a bad movie. Sure maybe it wasn't an exact copy of the games themes. But really is that what you want? I mean hell the story line was actually, in terms of movies, somewhat original (which is fantastic in itself if you think about it.)

Respect peoples opinions. If you dont, then you'll be given an infraction. Dont question others peoples and go whatever at them just because you feel differently.

SapphireStar hon, calm down. There's no need to get all worked up. Nobody here deserves an infraction. All they're doing is having a casual debate on the movie. Not everybody has to respect or like anyone else's opinions and so they counter them, thus a debate is born. I don't see anything in here that would result in getting an infraction. *pats* It'll be alright :) If you're worried about the thread turning into a flame war, just keep an eye on it, but I highly doubt that'll happen ^_~

I'm actually a bit annoyed, an earlier post stated they were so glad Advent Children came out. Though that was a poor excuse for a movie and sequel.

Spirits Within the movie in general I think was rather pretty good. Sadly it got branded with the Final Fantasy name and gets heavily panned for not having recognizable similarities with the games.

I suggest to some people they watch the movie again without that hindrance in your head, because it's not what was expected of "Final Fantasy". You may actually enjoy it.

Abomination to the game series? Hardly, it had many fantasy qualities and it's a pleasure to watch for the eye.

I know I made mention of this in my earlier post but I did forget to mention that Square has always prided themselves with having rather good graphics in their games. The fact that FF:TSW has such wonderful animation just helps prove this and just shows another relation to the games.

I really did enjoy FFTSW.
Ssssshhhhhhhh....dont say that here. This thread is secretly a "Hating FFSW R US""

we flame dumbass movies like this. I think this was just one of those movies where I actually tried to get a refund after seeing it at the theater.

The film was very good IMO. I dont care that it had nothing to do with FF, it wasnt supposed to. But if you look at the movie there are a few things that are similar between FF and FF:SW and its not that its ment to be they are just little things that I had pointed out to my friends.

If you look at the ship that carried the aliens to their battleground they looked alot like Sin Spawn.

There is also a referance about damaging the Gaia of the planet with the Thor cannon. Incidently the first Meteor in FFVII is said to have done the same thing.

The movie really is made of so many recycled ideas from FF games I find it hard for people to say that this movie was crap and yet still feel the games are stunning.

I think people really expected it to be more of a heavy action movie and in that respect they were let down. However if they watched it again without that thought maybe they would find it more enjoyable.

I think my favorite part was the secret music video in which all the characters danced to 'Thriller'.

*oh come on guys have a little heart :D

*well this movie was a big dissapointment for all final fantasy fans,i mean wheres the swords, the magical weapons and spell casting?atleast there are monsters even if there are half dead :D

*the only thing consistent in the movie is the name "Cid" :D guess the writers screwed up big time :D haha

*this movie just proves that no matter how popular or good something is,if you take out the basic components doesnt work! :)

*somebody just used the name final fantasy so people would want to see it,a greedy writer or producer perhaps :D

Probably SE they are leaches like that.

but it wasnt that bad, it wasnt great but it was alright, there are definetly worse movies.

Tssk, when i watched it then, i was soo disappointed man..
I thought it would have some sort of sword and magic in it. Unfortunately, there wasn't. I was like praying for some swords despite knowing already it was set in some sort of super high-tech area.
I thought the best they could do was to like, throw something more Final Fantasy-relevant..? (By that i mean the typically well-known FF trademarks like Airship, wooden ones? Chocobos? )
