Hey, I never took a test and I am SeeD class C. And DT says that Gabs just gives the tests because he wants to. He doesn't have to take a test, all he has to do is stay in the SeeDs long enough, do well in the RPG, and progress along with all the other SeeD members.

Actually the rules say that to earn a new rank you need to well in RPG and pass a Final Fantasy related test.

So you were given a rank based on your development in the RPG.
