Playstation The Last Guardian

This one's for you, Dan. :awesome:

Fumito Ueda’s just confirmed a holiday 2011 release for The Last Guardian at Sony’s TGS presser. Ueda also confirmed during his time on stage the game will support 3D.

He’s also revealed at an event to press that the main human charachter in the game was originally a girl. This was decided against for two reasons in the end, however. One being that, with all the climbing in the game, it was thought it would be best a boy would fit the profile as a young boy would have a better grip then a young girl. The second being the girl would have ended up wearing a skirt, which you could probably see up with certain camera angles. Ueda in pervert shocker.

Famitsu has a four page feature on The Last Guardian. It apparently includes a demo play session along with an interview of Fumito Ueda.

Here's some of the info that has leaked out of the feature:

• You initially can't communicate with Torico, so he'll quickly fall asleep.
• Torico can't eat everything. If he eats something he doesn't like, he'll spit it out.
• The game uses a collision system with similar capabilities to that of Shadow of the Colossus.
• Even if you're caught by the guards that fill the dungeons, the game doesn't immediately end.
• Torico may have a life gauge.
• They're currently looking into the possibility of showing gauges to support the player -- this is one area that Ueda is worrying over.
• In its impressions of the game, Famitsu commented that it exceeded expectations -- it's real that exceeds real.
• Torico actions are very detailed -- down to the level of his reacting differently depending on the sound in the area.
• The game uses a fake language
• Famitsu commented that the boy main character's movements are also incredible.
• Ueda responded that when the boy approaches a wall, he will naturally extend his arms out, and as he approaches Torico, he will touch the creature. To show the feeling of existence for the characters, you need to show such actions that make it look like the character himself knows that there's a wall there.
• Ueda also talked quite a bit about the game's expressive and physical computation power.

Regarding Team Ico's PS3 remakes, Ueda said that Shadow of the Colossus is amazing when you see it in 3D. For ICO, he said that they're remaking the opening scene

Speaking with 1UP, when asked if a demo for the game would be added to the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Ueda said:

“We’re considering it, but we haven’t come to a conclusion.”

Don’t bet against anything, innit. A God of War 3 demo was included in the God of War Collection before it was released, with a very small teaser for Sly 4 included in The Sly Collection.

A new batch of previews and screens went out on the game last night following new showings to press on the week of the NGP announce.

The Last Guardian’s out this holiday season for PS3. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection releases this spring

TLG-Delayed.jpg
Sony Computer Entertainment has today announced the delay of Team ICO’s The Last Guardian and the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Collection. Originally scheduled for holiday and spring releases (respectively), their new dates are still to be announced.
Project lead Fumito Ueda addressed the delay on the PlayStation.Blog, promising a new release date “at a later time”.
“I announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show that the release timing of The Last Guardian which is currently being developed would be holiday 2011.
“However, to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio’s obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.
“All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality.
“I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for “The Last Guardian” for so long, but I beg for your patience. I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.”
Stay tuned for future updates.

Personally delays don't deter me. They're trying to make the game the best they can and I'm down with that. I'm so excited about this little beauty though. It's going to be an emotional experience like the other two games. I know it'll make me cry but I won't be mad at it for that.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection Includes New Footage Of The Last Guardian

By Ishaan . August 15, 2011 . 10:33am

North America may not be getting the special Japanese Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection Limited Box, but the collection will still contain some bonus content on the disc . Sony mentioned these on the PlayStation blog today.

On the disc will be five bonus behind-the-scenes videos about both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The list (quoted verbatim) is:

  • Early concept and prototype video montage of Ico
  • Early concept and prototype video montage of Shadow of the Colossus
  • Initial concept video for NICO, a game that was never made but turned into Shadow of the Colossus, including an on-camera introduction from creator Fumito Ueda
  • Candid 20+ minute round-table discussion between Fumito Ueda (creator), Kenji Kaido (producer) and Junichi Hosono (designer)

Those are the content pertaining to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. In addition to these, there will also be a 12-minute behind-the-scenes video filmed at the Sony Computer Entertainment offices in Japan, with interviews about the making of both games, as well prototype footage and new footage of The Last Guardian.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection is due out on September 27th in North America.

The Last Guardian a TGS no-show

Adding to anxiety over Team Ico’s third outing is news The L:ast Guardian will skip the Tokyo Game Show this year.

20110909lastguardian.jpg

A post on the PlayStation Blog, revealing reversible cover art for the forthcoming HD Collection of earlier works Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, broke the bad news.
“We wanted to confirm that The Last Guardian is not on the schedule for this year’s Tokyo Game Show,” marketing manager Brian Dunn wrote.
“However we can assure you that Ueda-san and the rest of the development team are hard at work to bring his lofty vision to life and deliver the very best gaming experience possible.”
Speaking to VG247 at gamescom this year, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida said progress on the games had been “not as fast as” as Sony was “hoping for”.
The Last Guardian is a PlayStation 3 exclusive which tells the story of a young boy and giant griffin-like animal named Torico. Like ICO, the player must co-operate with their AI companion to progress, and like Shadow of the Colossus, can climb their giant friend.
Thanks, Joystiq.

This is such a disappointment. I read about this last night and It was just so disappointing. I am really looking forward to this game.. yet again they will not show anything as it will not be at the Tokyo game show. We need a new trailer... like honestly. There has not been much for this lately at all. Hard at work? I hear that all the time.. but Team Ico could be trusted, unlike certain developers I suppose.

It's a shame. That said, I'd prefer them to continue to do the game well. I'm glad that they are not rushing the game just to meet deadlines and keep Sony and their fans happy. I'm glad that Sony is a bit disappointed with how long it is taking. Hopefully (and I see no reason to believe why not) the game will be brilliant when it does come out, and we'll eventually forget all about this long wait.

If Ueda feels that it isn't finished, then I'm glad he's a perfectionist and wants it to be as great as he feels it should be.

It's going to be such a great game, I'd imagine it'll be very depresing though. Either the boy will die or his Dragon thing will die. Did they change the way the boy was animated or is that my imagination?

I'm not sure if the animation of the boy has changed since it had a proper trailer. I think that the design of the boy was different up to a point, but then the design has stuck since the proper reveal a few years ago. I don't know if he moves any differently now or if lighting is different. I think it's remained largely unchanged as a whole (from what has been revealed to us - very little).

Sony Santa Monica, others working on The Last Guardian

Sony has brought in western developers to help Team Ico with a mysterious, “very tough and technical issue” plaguing The Last Guardian.

20120222thelastguardian.jpg

Asked by Wired whether rumours of Sony Santa Monica’s involvement with the project were true, Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida spilled the beans.
“It’s not just Santa Monica,” he revealed. “We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the US and the UK so we are giving them whatever help they need.
“Technically, we have the best engineers in the U.S. and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice.”
Although Team Ico is making progress, Yoshida made another mention of a major revision which has set development back substantially.
“There’s a vision that we want to realize but it’s very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process,” he said.
Although it’s in a working state, Yoshida admitted the game is far from ready to fly.
“At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level – it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch,” he said.
Yoshida also reiterated that creator Fumito Ueda is still on board.
“It’s not like he left the making of The Last Guardian. He’s on top of the game and coming into the office,” the executive said.
“The difference is that he used to be a regular employee. But now we have a contract to define his role. It’s a very special contribution and role that he plays and we agreed, let’s make it more official, more special. That’s the only difference. He never left the team, he’s on top of the game.”

[h=1]The Last Guardian – Yoshida “can’t promise” a 2013 release for the Team ICO project[/h]Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida “can’t promise” The Last Guardian will launch during 2013, as he doesn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up by promising a launch window.

20120222thelastguardian.jpg

Speaking with JeuxVideo.fr, when asked if the long-awaited Team ICO title will release next year, Yoshida said: “No, sorry, I can’t say that.”
“The last time we talked about a date for The Last Guardian, we ended up disappointing many people. But I can say that the team is working hard on the project, particularly the engine,” he continued.

“It is precisely due to the teams working on the technical aspect of the game that we have nothing tangible to show you today. So now, I’m waiting for the right moment to introduce The Last Guardian, and speak with confidence of a release date.”
The Last Guardian was announced during E3 2009 for PS3.
Thanks: NeoGAF, Gematsu.
