Just wondering if any particular stat determins or increases the success rate of Steal, in FFVII in paticular? It's been hacking my brain for years yet can't find any solid info about it on the intornetz.

Though I don't know anything solid my guess is increasing speed and luck. Also levelling up the steal materia may give you a higher success rate.

I agree with FFguy I think Speed, Luck and leveling the materia are most likely your best bets.

I must admit the steal materia has always seemed less effective then steal abilities in other FF games.

Zidane in IX seemed so much more likely to succeed for example. Except for that damn moos giant when trying to get that flute.

I also found that steal in FFVII wasn't to handy either. You never got anything that exciting and most of the bosses didn't have much to steal either.

I think throughout the course of the game I only stole from two enemies. The SOLDIER 2nd class for the sword you get and the boss in cosmo canyon though I can't remember what for.

High Luck determines your steal rate. If I recall correctly, Yuffie had the best steal rate in the game. I just put a mastered Lucky Plus materia on her and she would basicly steal on the first attempt. I tried the theory out by equiping the sneak glove on her and removing the Luck+ materia, and she stole at half the rate as she was before.

I never had a problem with steal, I stole from everything, if it failed I just kept trying until I got what I wanted....but then I am a persistent fool....

I pretty much manage to nick summin from every battle I chose to steal from tho. It took an absolute AGE to get mug though which was a pain in the backside

I just remembered you can steal Tetra Elementals from Cactuars on Cactuar Island. Just goes to show that even 30 odd playthroughs down the line, there is still stuff I forget or just don't know about lol

Luck Plus on Yuffie it tis then :P

Steal was a great Idea but it can be a bit stupid sometimes. In most final fantasy games the stealm command doesn't really get you many benifits. usually 1 or 2 good items per game.

The best stealing I've seen is in final fantasy 6. stealing from the Merchants and low ranking soldiers.

Stealing in VII is awesome if you just know which enemies to waste your time with.

I always try and get;
Striking Staff
Hardedge
At least 3 Carbon Bangles
Atomic Scissors
Grand Glove
A few Shinra Betas
Lot's of Dragon Scales
Gold Armlets
A few Adaman Bangles
Water Rings
Warrior Bangle
A few Shinra Alphas

there are loads more but I'm tired....

But agreed, VI is the best one Stealing-wise.

This is another one I hardly used in FFVII. I was more fond of Morph and such in order to gain the Sources for leveing up your characters' stats. The Steal materia was once again only used by me to master it and then drop it back into my inventory to never be used again.

I reckon luck has an increased affect on it. Cant really imagine any other stat doing anything.

Didn't dexterity play a factor in it? OR is that something else?

I agree Entirely, to my recollection the puzzle involving stealing in FF6 is probably the only time that steal has been a key to solving a puzzle.

*hmmm its just my opinion and own observation in the game that the speed and agility are the stats that affect STEAL rate :)

*steal is pretty neat but i dont think there are lots of items that are worth stealing, not like in Final Fantasy IX where steal is like the number 1 priority of first moves in battle, especially in boss fights right! :)
