Final Fantasy XIV director Hiromichi Tanaka has told German site 4players.de that Microsoft was unwilling to deal with Square Enix over the use of Xbox Live with the MMO.

Tanaka said that MS had allowed to let previous MMO Final Fantasy XI onto the service because it was still in its infancy. Now that Live has become established, though, Microsoft has said no to the MMO. Tanaka said in the interview that all development on the 360 version has since been cancelled.

Last year at gamescom, Tanaka told VG247 that “discussions” with MS over FFXIV appearing on 360 were held up because of issues with Xbox Live.
Final Fantasy XIV was recently dated for September 30 worldwide for PC, with a collector’s edition dropping before then on September 22.

The PS3 version, now the game’s only console SKU, will launch in March 2011.

What a bunch of turds. I mean honestly, if Square uses the same licensing system with Xbox Live that every other game developer uses, there should be no reason they should be excluded from online play. As far as I can see it would be in Microsoft's best interests to dilute Sony's exclusive series.

Maybe Microsoft is feeling butt hurt about all the fawning S-E recently showed for the iPhone/iPad. Sometimes I forget Microsoft also competes with Apple xD

Maybe this might sour any future plans of XBOX FF games :hmmm:

I sure hope so, Fusionist. Not that I hate the Xbox or anything, but an exclusive title can be brought to its full potential when left on one system. Metal Gear Solid 4, Mass Effect 2, and Uncharted 2 proved that. Plus, didn't they say they had to leave out a bunch of stuff from XIII due to the size of the Xbox disks?

I hope Versus stays exclusively on PS3.

This actually benefits Sony massively, and it surprises me that Microsoft won't budge tbh, especially given how well LIVE has succeeded. Nevertheless, the only other rival for sales has gone. Furthermore, from what I can tell on the FFXIV Beta Forums, the specifications for PCs are quite vigorous and a lot of people can't play it, though it's also Square Enix's fault as those who can play it, with top end computers can't get the game to run anywhere near top performance, especially at 30FPS-50FPS so I think this could turn a lot of people away from the PC version imo. Well, one man's loss is another man's gain.

...haha

Suddenly I'm not quite regretting my PS3 purchase so much :wacky:

This is brilliant news :lew:

Technically, Mass Effect 2 is on both 360 and PC. Plus it was made using the unreal engine 3.5, an upgraded version of UE3. Which the PS3 has games using that engine such as Batman Arkham Asylum, Borderlands, Bioshock 2 etc. And don't forget the PS3 has better hardware, so a well done port (unlike Bayonetta) would be as good. Most multiplatform games conform to the Xbox 360's limitations anyways. In the case of Final Fantasy XIII, they lowered the graphical quality. This is why multiplatform games are modeled after the 360's specs and not the PS3. The differences stick out like a sore thumb. I'm pretty sure that's the one difference between the two (regarding XIII). I haven't heard of anything else being modified or excluded.

Not much from me on this except: your loss, Microsoft. Actually making an effort to have FFXIV on such a popular network like Xbox LIVE as well would have been rather beneficial to Microsoft. Now Sony emerges to reap the rewards from this opportunity.

Well I never wanted this on 360 anyway. It is a huge loss for microsoft though if they do not want this on Xbox live. I am glad its only gonna be on the playstation 3 as that means moregames for my ps3. But Microsoft put XI on the xbox 360. XIV is supposed to be much better so it is a big loss. All those things said I am glad no 360 version will ever emerge.

Oh joy, more FFXIV news that I don't give a crap about because it's basically a re-hash of XI. What's more, XI is just an online re-hash of games in the tactics series. I figured this crap would end with XII. Squenix are proving that their creativity flew out the window when Sakaguchi left. I swear, if Versus tanks then I'm abandoning all hope with Squenix.

not good news :/

i might of have brought it if it was on xbox 360 but now i guess i won't be :/

Yup.

I mean who wouldn't do that? Xbox LIVE has been very successful as Ryan has said so, Microsoft has lost a lot of things on what could have been beneficial to them. Seeing as though FF itself is pretty popular it would only seem logical. But, Sony ends up with the real prize here.
