There is speculation about on the fact of the games before the company became Square-Enix, a lot of people say to me that the games seemed to go down hill when the merge happened but what do you think? I think that in a way they did go down hill a bit. the games became shorter and less challenging and the story lines started to go off point a lot, but they have started picking up a lot recently with there new games. I feel for instance that Final Fantasy 7 - Dirge of Cerberus could of been longer with more of a challenge, but as i say what do we all think?

Things have been completely shit since the merge, Final Fantasy XII being the only exception. And for most gamers, it was not that great, but still not horrible.

I've also read reviews for Birth By Sleep... and so far, even for the almighty Kingdom Hearts, they can't even break the "psp games are shit and only last 1 week" Syndrome for players.

but i guess that's why i use gamefly :awesome:

This same subject has been mentioned on numerous other forums/websites.
Most people agree the company's product quality has gone down since the merger.
Whether that's the fault of the merger itself, Wada, people like Toriyama and Kitase/FF directors and producers, the departure of some staff, or some combination of those remains to be seen.

It's a combination. Every since the merger with Enix, Square have taken more of route to try and maximise profit at every available opportunity rather than focus on the quality of their titles, and considering Final Fantasy is meant to be their main franchise, the last title of "AAA" quality I played was Final Fantasy IX. Wada doesn't help things either, every time he opens his mouth he contradicts someone or talks about unnecessary westernisation.

Then you have the producers themselves, who on the face of it, probably do a decent job they just lack originality. Everything they're producing has already been done to a certain degree, but as Kojima has said, the Japanese market is dying, so fewer top quality producers are likely to come through. I guess to be less cynical it's probably worth noting that the merger happened mid-Final Fantasy X-2 and the producer changed mid-Final Fantasy XII development which probably didn't help things. Sakaguchi was more original than the majority of the developers Square-Enix have nowadays though I'm reluctant to say "better" since he was the director of The Spirits Within which screwed them over financially to begin with.

I think SE have only made two exceptional FF...................one main one......

The two would be Crisis core (PSP) and FFXIII (I don't give a fuck if you hate me for liking it)

But I'm not saying they were better than SS since the merge they gave me(NOTE:my opinion) two of the WORST FF's in the series I have ever played..........that's FFX-2 and FFXII.

I'd say the main reason would be Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu leaving.........But of course thats not my only reason..........there are other reasons RPG is kinda like a dying genre, and like Mercurial said below so is the Japanese market.

Take FF's VII VIII IX they all had outstanding success.......why because of the abundance of graphical, atb upgrades, battle system upgrades that the influx of the PS1 allowed the series to change from its 2d nature.

Then came the PS2..........just a more powerful console which allowed for a more engrossing story in FFX, but the series also lost some of its staples, worldmap, airship and the like.

When you strip away the better parts off a game, parts people like, and only add 2or 3 new ideas.........something has to give, and its usually fan reaction.

S.Soft or S-E.........it would not have mattered there product is slowly becoming redundant.

Well, Crisis Core was only good if you were a fan of FFVII, otherwise it is what it is: a shitty PSP game. It's nothing personal, just all PSP games happen to be shit.

Crisis Core doesn't really get any points from borrowing Kingdom Hearts' battle system, either. :neomon:

I don't care what anyone says, FFXIII is the biggest flaming pile of shit I have ever touched since Tales of Legendia, and man, I thought there was no game that could possibly be worse.

All of it's developers should turn their balls in, they are not deserving of them.

Also, as Ryan has said; Yoichi Wada is a flaming jackass. He is the one who told us Final Fantasy XII was a pile of shit because they didn't have anymore money to put into it.

but you know

i bet if they didn't have a cinematic sequence of completely useless bullshit every 5 seconds, they'd have had a lot more money to do things with.

The reason RPGs are dying... is because people like explosion BOOM big drama TITS ASS BUSH SKIN GORE BLOOD BEATING DEAD HORSES OVERKILL BONERS TITS TITS TITS MUSIC THAT DOES NOT BLOW ASS CUSTOMIZATION THINGS THAT DONT LOOK GAY BADASS CHARACTERS ANIME CHICKS WITH HUGE TITS BEGGING FOR DICK PAINFUL COMIC RELIEF BEHEADING A DOUCHEBAG IN THE MIDDLE OF A SPEECH GUNS SWORDS FIREBALLS BIG ASS FUCKING EXPLOSIONS POWER LEVELS OVER 9000 KICKASS SCENES LIKE THAT TIME ROCK LEE KICKS THE FUCK OUT OF GAARA IN NARUTO OR LIAM NESSON KILLS THE SHIT OUT OF A HOUSE OF ARABS IN TAKEN NINJAS ASSASSINS KILLING PEOPLE FOR NO REASON PERSONA USERS MISTAKING THEIR EVOKERS FOR GUNS BATTLE SYSTEMS THAT DONT SUCK AND CHANGEABLE COSTUMES THAT DONT SUCK A GIANT MOTHERFUCKING DICK REPLAY VALUE

if someone ever happens to make an RPG with all of the above things included, they will probably become richer than that guy who's richer than Bill Gates. :neomon:

Well yes your right Crisis Core is only good if your a FFVII fan (I'm not but I do like the game)..............it did sell a lot of copies and the cutomer reaction was good too.............but after all it is a PSP game plus it's a prequel nothing too big not a whole new final fantasy game..........

SS have gave us some of the greatest games ever like FFVI,FFVII,FFVIII FFIX and FFX.

NOTE :These are not my opinion........
FFVI=one of the best 2D games ever
FFVII=one of the greatest games ever (not my opinion that one)
FFVIII & FFIX= definately two of the greatest games for the PS1
FFX=Thats up there too one of the greatest PS2 games

These are the main best sellers in the FF series...........and out of all the FF games people love them the most..............

The only standing out SE games

Crisis Core=one of the best sellers for the PSP plus people did like it kinda

Problem:it's a PSP game and a prequel so most people may not of understood it............as the original game was released way back in 1997

FFXIII=I don't think it'll be up there like FFX,FFVII,FFIX etc as one of the greatest games for their paticular console???

Personally I like it but most hated it............so that was a disaster too

Same as FFX and FFXII..........BOTH SE games.

And I do agree with you that the genre needs more drama shit to entertain people..........But I don't think money is the main problem.........they do take already ages to develop a game.

Squaresoft. Their games were much more fun and enjoyable. I find most Square enix games to be disappointing. I don't know, they just feel a little souless?

Yeah, that's something I forgot to mention in my wall of text. Production has been very slow since the SE Merger.

I remember being so hyped about Crisis Core. It was announced in 2004. We waited nearly five years for a game that could be beaten in less than 20 hours and STILL had retarded plot holes inserted into it. :monster:

Yeah thats true..........But I don't really know that much about SquareSofts's history than SE's.............But I think SE announce waaayy TOOO many bullshit games (NIER,Kane and Lynch etc etc)...........this obviously slows down the development on FF games..........

The announcement thing is true as well.........another example would be Versus XIII announced in 2006 now were looking at 2012 according to the latest news surrounding that game.

I actually don't fully understand the argument that if Sakaguchi is still around in SE, its games would be better. The guy would only be fixated on keeping sci-fi out of Final Fantasy. He's never really done anything very remarkable outside of Square Enix, based on the little reception gained by Mistwalker's games.

Of course, I also have to agree that Squaresoft was the better company. It's just sad to see the state of the company now - especially at the hands of Yoichi Wada who comes out with as much crap as politicians do nowadays. Under him, I just get the idea that there is little unity at SE and that they don't fully know where to exactly go with the direction of the company (Kitase says this, Wada says something else).

Westernisation is something we can care less about at the moment. Yes, the Japanese gaming industry has severely deteriorated lately, but SE's current franchises are doing fine as they are. Too much of this westernisation route may be a dangerous backfire in the future.

They're also throwing out quite a few bits of half-assed games either made in-house or outsourced just for some quick profit. I'm looking at After Years and even Dirge of Cerberus. The latter is just an example of where it goes rather downhill. I'm not surprised that it turned out pretty badly in terms of reception. The producer even commented once that he wanted to make a game with similar elements to the Half-Life franchise, even though genres like this are never SE's specialty. DoC just goes to show that SE is willing to ditch quality for quick money.

And of course, I don't really approve of what it looks like a precedence of visuals over other aspects of a game. Particularly with Final Fantasy, they're just putting too much into graphics and CGI and probably not enough elsewhere. Yes, it makes the game extremely pretty - like it's a pioneer destined to push the boundaries of graphical technology on consoles, but what's the point if it leaves the game mainly soulless and a chore to play at times? Squaresoft never really suffered from this symptom as much.

P.S. Let's not forget that SE loves putting the cart before the horse as well. I do not see any other company announce about 5 games in one year at once, then finally release one of them about 7 years later or something. Clearly they need to get their priorities straight and give their teams some breathing space so they won't have to come out with underdeveloped projects just because another 5 are waiting for them.

I think with Final Fantasy Versus XIII it hit unexpected problems, the first being more than half moved over to developing Final Fantasy XIII which I have no doubt was due to the announcement of the 360 version, plus most of the Versus XIII team is the Kingdom Hearts team so they'll have been, or currently are working on 358/2 Days, Birth By Sleep, Coded, Re:Coded, Kingdom Hearts 3D. Then I have no doubt the weary of the game because of the criticism FFXIII got. Plus the PR behind Versus is awful, you get next to no info on how it's going, and all Nomura goes it "won't be ready for...etcetcetc"
