Digital content is now “a massive part of” Square Enix Europe’s remit, says the group’s CEO Phil Rogers.

In an interview with Develop, the publishing boss said his company has turned a new leaf in regards to online strategies.

“How we offer content to consumers via digital download is very important to us,” he said, “and premium downloadable content is an absolute must for the titles that we launch.”

Part of this renewed strategy was outlined last month with the reveal of an upcoming edition of Tomb Raider – called Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light – which will be delivered as a DLC game only.

“I think the new Lara Croft game is a testament to our strategy to try something new,” said Rogers, “not as an experiment in a hit or miss way, but actually as a way to meet new consumer demand.”

And Rogers went on to claim that future Square Enix Europe games would likely come as episodic content.

“Will we see our games split into episodes? It’s not something that we are particularly planning, but I’ve no doubt that we will be over the next three years,” he said.

Elsewhere I the broad-ranging interview with Develop – where Rogers explained the reason for the Tomb Raider name change – Rogers also touched on the group’s broader platform strategy.

“It’s going to be great to deliver games across all these different platforms, and we will be looking at them all, from PSP to PlayStation to mobile,” he said.

The first half of Develop’s interview with Rogers can be found here.

So any chance of Final Fantasy XIII DLC. That would be epic to get all the stuff that was taken out from the game by DLC. But since its Lara here I doubt it. But isnt Guardian of light only for Arcade(XBL) etc etc. Its not gonna be on 360 or ps3 right?

I presume it'll be on Xbox Live and PSN. I hope they're not going to go down the route of, "we'll release the game then add important DLC" like they did in ACII where they made 2 whole chapters as DLC :ffs: I don't mind stuff such as UC2's like skins and maps but I loathe it when they release a game then DLC straight after which adds to the story, essentially making the game incomplete on release >.>

I don't mind DLC, so long as its actually worth the money. If Square Enix start pulling stunts like Disgaea 3 has with its DLC, I am going to be very, VERY angry. You shouldn't have to pay extra to get everything out of a disc you already paid for, end of story.
However, this raises my hopes slightly for some Star Ocean 4 DLC...playable Crowe would be a dream come true. However, this is improbably, alas...

It's a "must" - really? I'm sure we've been managing with our games well without having the letters "DLC" pasted here, there and everywhere.

I won't mind it as much if by "DLC" they mean little mundane add-ons that mean very little to the main storyline of a game. At least then it means I don't have to bother buying the crap.

I would however, be fuming if SE decided to leave a game incomplete and have a chunk of its story as a pricey DLC. Sorry guys, but I would prefer it if when I buy a game to expect it all there on that disc.

I've said this before and I'll say it time after time again. A game should be a great game without the need of DLC. You shouldn't need to cough up $50-$60 for a game then an extra $10-$25 to get extra crap for it. If DLC were free, I wouldn't mind as much. However, with the price of video games going up in an already shitty economy, I'm not coughing up $10-$25 to get an extra gun, sword, map, or chapter that's "justified" by giving you a "better gaming experience".

The gaming experience should have been great without DLC. Games of old were doing just fine without companies raping them with DLC. If it takes DLC for your game to become great, you've done something wrong.

I agree with this completely. The reason I play games primarily on consoles rather than the PC is that I don't want to be bothered with going on the computer to play them, and I'd be extremely irritated if I bought a new game and found out that there were pieces missing just for the purpose of generating online traffic and sales for the company.

DLC stands for "Downloadable Content". And it's popping up all over the place for console games. Whenever game developers realize that their game could be better, or people are getting bored with it, or you can beat the game in 5 hours *coughmodernwarfare1&2cough* they make you pay about $10-$20 to make more cash, so your game no longer sucks. -__-
