Final Fantasy, a series that started about 20 years ago, has gradually attained many fans over that time, and despite some people's current opinions on the franchise, new fans still keep on coming.

But I have to wonder, should we still try to be considerate of potential spoilers for the newer fans? Or has enough time passed for some games that it's general knowledge? Like, is there a standard waiting period before you can talk freely about a game, or is it better just to keep your mouth shut?

Am I wrong to think we all know
Faris
is actually a woman in FFV?

Or that
Terra
isn't completely human in FFVI?

I mean, who doesn't know about
Aerith
dying in FFVII?

Or
Laguna
being
Squall's
father in FFVIII?

How about
Zidane
not being born on Gaia in FFIX?

And other such examples. I can understand people being careful about FFXIII since it's only came out 6 months ago in Japan, but I have to wonder about the older games that have been around for a couple of years now.

Thoughts?

I actually agree with ya Fusion. I mean, it's been enough time that it should be general knowledge but, I think it's out of respect to those that are new yo the series I mean, it doesn't hurt to put spoiler taga but, I get where your going with it.

I don't really mind it I mean, if you know it you know it you know? XIII is the newest to the series of FF that is true. But like I said, no harm is done if you do put Spolier Tags does it?

Hmm, I mean i'd probably wait a year or so after the release because some people might wait for the price to drop etc etc.

Well... If you are consciously navigating your way to a website like this that specifically revolves around Final Fantasy and then you enter a section that specifically concerns a certain Final Fantasy game, and then click a specific thread that discusses a certain thing about this certain game, I think it's ridiculous to expect spoiler tags.
I think there are exceptions though, like the one you mentioned. I myself haven't even bought FFXIII yet, but I wouldn't be whining if I came across a spoiler on this site.

Whoa whoa whoa............ Aeris dies?

I think the statute of limitations on being spoiled is somewhere around a year or so. After that, spoiler tags are really just a courtesy. Some people are good about them, some aren't. Right now, FFXIII plot points should be tagged. But this time next year, I think it'd be all right to let a few things. And I say that having not yet played FFXIII. So if I still haven't played it by then, I shouldn't be bothered about being spoiled. My own fault at that point.

Yknow I was thinking about this kinda thing last knight.....that usually happens from time to time.

Anyway I came to think that Aeris/Aerith is the Dying equivalent of Darth Vader being Lukes farther, every knows about that surely? Its like the one of the most talked about moments in FF history.

I agree. That's one of the most popular spoiler of all time. I've known that Aerith will die in the game long before I even begun to play FFVII.

There are two that I think that do not need spoiler tags.

Aerith's death is one of them and that one espeically. Everyone who has ever played a game knows that she dies. Even new fans of the series. It almost feels like common knowledge and I get a little annoyed putting tags up for it. It's like putting up spoiler tags for Darth Vader being Luke's father (EDIT: lol just read the posts above mine and saw that Galaxy already mentioned this XD) or the guy in Sixth Sense actually being dead all along. Everyone already knows. New fans of the series will also most likely not start with VII or even have a desire to play it because of its age and graphics. If they are curious about the game they will probably read up on it somewhere. Or they will watch AC first and find out.

The other one, which is a little so-so is Tidus's death or fading away at the end of X. It just seems like everyone knows that it happends. All anyone would have to do is read the back of X2 to find out. Though I say so-so because I think a lot of girls that want to play an FF game and are not gamers would not know of this fact.

The rest, I say put spoiler tags because they are not as popular as VII and X. I know a lot of gamers, who will play an FF game but are not necessarily fans of the series like us, who could not tell you the plot of IX.

When I first joined up, I avoided the sections about the FF games which I hadn't played yet like the plague. Personally I think spoiler tags are necessary because there will always be people who view certain FF forums who haven't completely finished the game yet. For example, I would want people to use tags in the Is it worth getting? threads as they are specifically for people who don't have the game yet.

Obviously if a thread is posted in the right section and it has appropriate warnings and shit then, I'd expect people to not use tags in it. But I think spoiler tags should still be used in threads where you wouldn't expect to find them.

Personally I think all of the examples that Fusionist posted still need spoiler tags, maybe with the exception of Aeris dying.
