Simplified Spelling

What a crock of complete shit!
But its more like dyslexia spelling, not that I have anything agaisnt that. My ex and current boyfriend are dyslexic.

I can read simplified spelling fine. There is truth that only a few words only have to be correct for your brain to pick up on what it actually should be. But I do think this shouldn't go far at all, its a terrible idea.

OMG if they do that then I will never spell correctly again. That is so dumb. The words just look like a 3 year old has spelt them, and I don't care if some words are hard to spell, thats what dictionaries are for. They look right spelt as they are and to change them will just be confusing

I'm somewhat hypocritical when it comes to txt speak like this. I'm abhore from it on forums and MSN, but when I am actually texting someone, I abbreviate as much as possible. It's mostly because I'm too lazy to keep pressing the buttons on my phone. :wacky:
That said, the country will go to the shitter if this goes through. People will grow up without actually being able to spell, and we'll just have a nation full of half-arsed idiots.

And theres also alot less space to text in so it's ok to do it there, but to introduce it into the Endglish language as standard is stupid

I dislike abbreviating everywhere. When I post on forums, I use full punctuation and grammar. It's the same when I use msn messenger and even when I text.

When I was younger - before the age of around 15 - I wasn't very good at spelling at all, but between the ages of 11 and 15 I improved a lot through hard work and excellent teaching. If everyone gave up early and used simplified spelling... I'd go mad! There is no way I'd be able to read a book written in that form of English without yelling in pain!

I'd actually home school my children if that's how they were going to be taught to spell. Why teach them to do things wrong? Not only would it annoy so many people, the principle of it is absurd.

I actually type everything out when I text. It makes my thumbs sore after a while...

And see, that's the thing: that idiot woman who's for simplified spelling is saying that most people are simply incapable of learning so much spelling. Bullshit. People didn't have this problem 50 years ago. It's the EDUCATION system that's creating difficulties. People are very lazy today and the education system is going downhill (at least in America, but I'm guessing in Europe too if they need to suggest simplified spelling). But um, it's not a problem at all if you actually put forth a bit of effort and have someone teaching you.

And by teaching I don't mean all this guesswork crap, like "look at the first and last letters of the word and guess what's in the middle!" No, I mean phonics. And not Hooked on Phonics either, because that thing is crap, I mean actual curriculum.

I'd actually home school my children if that's how they were going to be taught to spell. Why teach them to do things wrong? Not only would it annoy so many people, the principle of it is absurd.

I was homeschooled xD And most of the curriculum my mom used was from Calvert (a school in Baltimore) so it wasn't a load of phooey. And they wouldn't be teaching the wrong way either, since if implemented it would become the "right" way.

I think this is a terrible idea. And I checked the glossary and most of the proposed changes are just silly. Phonic to Phonnic? And I'd also like to point out that the English language has many vowel sounds though it uses a five-vowel system. There isn't a single vowel in English that doesn't have more than one pronunciation. So how is 'uther' any better than 'other'? If I saw 'uther', I would read it 'oo-ther'.

And I'm assuming this wouldn't just affect current English words, it would affect borrowings as well. English borrows heavily from other languages. If this were to work, there would also need to be a formula for changing each new word that comes into the language as well. It would be a lot more work than just changing a few words.

It seems silly to try to change an entire language (and a very widely spoken one at that). And not to mention, every literate English speaker would need to learn this new spelling. There are dictionaries and thesauri for a reason.

The day they change the spelling to this new form is the day I buy a shotgun somewhere and blow my brains out. I value my communication, and half the text messages I receive I really can't understand due to abbreviations...

Actually I probably wouldn't kill myself, as that is a bit extreme, but I wouldn't receive the changes well at all. Reading Ms. Bell's wonderful, (or as she might say, something along the lines of 'wundafull' [lol]), post I got the feeling that she was far less intelligent than she actually was. If my perception is similar to a lot of peoples on this one, I'm guessing anyone who does use this system will look fairly retarded in the eyes of those who don't.

It ain't really that hard to learn and speak English if you're of an English speaking background, and even for some others not of that kind of background...
