This upcoming title is a sequel to 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, which was released for the Nintendo DS in 2009 (JP) and 2010 (NA) [Wiki page for more info].

Developed by Chunsoft and published by Aksys Games, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (
極限脱出ADV 善人シボウデス, lit. Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die) will please any gamer who enjoys an in-depth storyline with a great dose of dialogue, mystery and many mentally stimulating puzzles. This single-player, virtual novel-esque game will contain voiced dialogue and 3D models (as opposed to the 2D models in the previous game).

Similar to the first game, there will be a cast of 9 characters who have to take part in a "Nonary Game" - pretty much a survival game of life or death. Players must make multiple decisions throughout the game that will ultimately affect the outcome of the story. This game will have a high amount of replay value considering that there are more than 20 different obtainable endings.

There is an English demo available on the Playstation Network for anyone interested in trying out the game for the PSVita! This is especially helpful for those who haven't played the predecessor, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.

*Personally, I'm a fan of this series and I highly recommend this game to any gamer who enjoys a smart and sophisticated storyline (almost like a psychological thriller) with a great amount of replay value. I played the previous 999 title and ended up replaying the game like 8 times to obtain all of the endings. xD;
 
?! Just when I started playing this game?! This can't be a coincidence! What is happening?!

Well, that's an interesting piece of news... But urgh. I'll need to get either one of those consoles soon. But which one?! Looks like another puzzle that I'll have to solve :\

And, I second ^'s recommendation. If you're looking for a game that will make you think harder than you usually do in most other games, then this is the game for you. Not to worry though, it's not all puzzles left and right, up and down. There is a, I would say, rather well-written story delivered in the form of a visual novel... And certain points in the story, you'll have to make decisions that would, or could, lead to different paths in the story, and hence, a different ending.

Think Phoenix Wright without the humor and loud "Objections!", throw in a darker, creepier and morbid atmosphere, add a touch of psychological influences, including a wealth of options that you can choose from that would affect the story in ways you won't expect... Well. That's the game.

Opening doors remind me so much of Resident Evil, man.

The Wiki article on the game sheds some light on the game play. This series appears to be slightly different from the previous in the series. For me, I'm extremely curious about how the story flows, considering the first series. Some characters in this sequel came from the previous game... Interestingly, actually.

There are two main types of gameplay in Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. As a visual novel, the game primarily involves interacting with non-player characters and making choices that alter the outcome of the story. The player is given the additional responsibility of choosing whether to betray a character, or to cooperate with them.[SUP][7][/SUP] If both characters choose to cooperate, they both gain BP. However, if one character betrays another, the character being betrayed loses points while the traitor gains a greater amount of points.[SUP][7][/SUP] If both characters choose to betray, no points are gained or lost. The plot and ending of the game will vary depending on whether the player chooses to betray or cooperate with other characters.
The game also contains various puzzles, in which the player interacts with the environment in order to escape from a room. Solving puzzles can drastically alter the environment of a room. If the player fails a puzzle too many times, the characters in the room with them will offer hints on how to complete it, eventually revealing the solution to the puzzle.[SUP][5][/SUP] However, the game also introduces a slightly harder difficulty to the game in which during puzzles, the non-player characters will not give hints.

Unfortunately, I'm still at a loss at which version I should get - the 3DS or the PS Vita. Decisions decisions... x__x

Btw, if anyone definitely KNOWS which version they're getting, you should pre-order the game if you wanna get the bonus item! It's a wristwatch akin to the one used in the Nonary Game! The pre-order with the bonus item is the same price as the regular version, so why not? :p

If it cheap, I might pick this up for my vita, i'm gathering it a mystery puzzle game, sooo I might just rent it out rather than pay for it, as i'm not a huge fan of puzzle games, but from the trailer it looks pretty dam cool :lew:

Yeah, the game is $39.99 for either version, so I think that's pretty standard for a Vita game! :3 If you can rent it, that'd be even better I suppose, but you might wanna hold onto the game for awhile considering the multiple endings!

It's more of a mystery game then a puzzle one 'cause it places more emphasis on the storyline than the puzzles themselves, unlike a game from the Professor Layton series that seems to have a non-existent storyline and too many darn difficult puzzles! :gonk:
