Does anyone else think that, despite the convenience of being portable, playing the PS1 Final Fantasy games on PSP makes them lose something?

For example, playing them on the PSP means you can turn the sound off, which, to me anyway, feels so weird since the music is an integral part of these games, and the games lose something when playing them on mute.

I think that, while they are fun to play on PSP, they're so much better playing them on the PS3 / on a TV, then you can fully absorb yourself into the game. They're not really games you can play "on the go" like Mario or Pokémon or whatever, so to me, it feels weird playing them on the PSP - not that I'm complaining, it's great to have them portable - the convenience is great, but I think they're more enjoyable playing them on a large screen.

So anyway, my question is - FFVII, VIII and IX. Just as good on the PSP, or better on a TV screen?

The PS1 FF games do lose part of their impact when played on a smaller screen, but I attribute that to their being over a decade old. They're not as good as they were the first time around because I've now played better games, so they're not as good as I remember them to be.

However, I am much more motivated to play them on my PSP than I was on the PS1. If I was faced with the task of replaying them on my PS2, I wouldn't bother. Its because they're on my PSP that I've been willing to play them again - I've become more of a handheld-orientated gamer as I've gotten older, its more convenient.

*nods*

I agree. I was playing FF7 on the PSP makes me think it isn't that good game I play on PS.

They shouldn't import games, especially since it'll lose its greatness. :gasp:

I think the way you can turn off the PSP whenever you want without actually turning off the game is what made a difference for me, I saved a whole lot less. Also, obviously everything will feel different since you're not playing the game for the first time. One problem I had was trying to press all buttons at once for the organ in FFVIII, you wouldn't believe the time consumption and the improvisation I had to take (holding the R button down using the table, holding the PSP upside down etc).

But I don't have any problems, I love how you can play them on the PSP and would love them to put 1-6 on PSN for download. It doesn't ruin them at all. Besides it saves the annoying time of finding memory cards, game disks and plugging everything etc.

I hated doing that part! :gasp:

The buttons were too hard to press at the same time. I tried it millions of times before I stopped.

I think I prefer to play them on PS3.

I have a PSP with FF8 and FF9 on and I rarely play them on there.
It's good that you can actually do that though. 10 years ago these games were revolutionary and you needed the top of the range (at least for FF7 and FF8) system to play them on.

Anyway, I don't think they lose anything while on there, and I don't really understand your comment about turning the sound down (you can do that on a TV can't you?)

BUT, I would rather play them on a big screen.

To be honest I prefer all games to be on a PS2/XBOX etc consoles due to the fact that they have a bigger screen.

I feel more into the game if it's on the big screen.

Squinting down at these little characters on the PSP/DS etc makes it feel more distant for me and I don't feel like I get into the game as much. =/

However, the PSP and such are convenient if you're waiting at the doctors or something. >.<

I haven't played any FF ports to PSP yet, but in general, I think unless adjustments are made, straight ports of console to handheld can have problems.

I've been pissed how there's no quick save option in a lot of ports. Sure, you can just turn off the PSP, but if you're like me, I usually play with my PSP on the go and like to use it for music and even watching vids too Dx

As for losing out on the original presentation, I think it can't be helped. I mean, if the game's literally in the palm of your hand, it's all the more apparent just how small it is, as opposed to be rooted in one spot staring in front of a t.v. :hmmm:

The thing about Playing RPGs on the PSP is its generally a bad idea IMO.

They are to in depth for the limited opportunities we may be presented with to play them, take FFVIII for example all the drawing you have to do or FFVII leveling up your materia,
These are thing better doe when you on your ass at home.

Ultimately it would be good to play FF on the PSP with a little bit of tweaking, and by that I mean making leveling up, increasing your skill points on various FF games (junction, materia, spheregrid),increased Gil at the end of battles.

These are things that need to be, reduced or increased to get the most out of the limited time we have away from our consoles, because whats the point of p buying a game to play outside of our homes when we could just as easily play them on a console.

On a smaller screen no less.

There was a gamesupposed to be released a few years ago for the PSP, it was an RPG where leveling was omitted and the only thing you had to take control off was ITEM, Weapon & money procurement.

Unfortunately it was scrapped before release for some reason?

I would love to play FFVII,FFVIII o the go but they require to much time and patience to be done properly nd with out the care orinterst they are ultimately ruined to an extent.

I concur. Playing the games without the music isn't a nice experience. It feels bland. I am against the idea of transferring classic games to the PSP.

By the way, I even old Final Fantasy games on the PS1. The old classic console works best. :)
(Well, not really, since they have such a slow processor)

Sorry, what's this about games having no music?

Does BGM get removed somehow? D=

Or do you guys mean for the sake of courtesy, turning music down (that and trying to save energy in the system with a lower volume and such)? 'Cause I just use headphones then xD

I believe the OP made the point of having the choice to turn the music off?

Since its forced on you in the Original FF games, it might make some people lose the feeling of what they originally did all those years ago:)

I havent played them on the PSP yet, but my guys got his on his PS3 and Im dying to see what its like. Playing them on a TV screen is the norm for me, on a small screen may lose its edge for me.
