Optional Party Members

Does anyone know how to obtain the optional party members Serah and Rygdea? Apparently it can only be done on second playthrough?

Wait, what? I didn't know there were any Serah or Rygdea party members in Final Fantasy XIII. I haven't got the game yet, but I should in six more days hopefully, just never heard anything of this though.

You've been hearing some weird rumour there unfortunately.

Both Serah and Rygdea are NPCs - therefore you don't get them as optional characters in your party - if that's what you mean.

You're stuck with the party of six, sorry.

^ And that would be why I haven't heard of them being playable characters, then.

Wonder why anybody would make that up to tell people and get their hopes up...so there is no secret playable character like Vincent in Final Fantasy VII.

I'd imagine serah would be a pretty weak character, but then again, if ppl like vanille and hope can save the world, then anything goes i suppose lol

Im gutted you cant have either of them in your party as I do <3 Rygdea XD But yeah I could see Serah being weak. Vanille and Hope are only going to be weak if you dont buff them up. Hope and Vanille are magic casters and healers in my group and they can pummel with some magic!

Ah, now I'm not so sure. Let's look at the evidence:

First off Final Fantasy XIII already shares a lot of life blood with Final Fantasy VII. E.g Ex-soldier Lightning = Cloud, Snow's buddies NORA = AVALANCHE. They're all fighting a corrupt government that controls its citizens. Is it so farfetched to believe that perhaps Final Fantasy XIII also has secret characters ala Final Fantasy VII?

Secondly, if Serah Farron isn't playable it will be the first time in the Final Fantasy series that an NPC has appeared in the game manual, interesting no?

Lastly I submit to you a screenshot unearthed from a Japanese gaming magazine back before the game was even announced:

Right, let me go through this with you:

1) Final Fantasy XIII may share SOME similarities with FFVII. Other than the few things that you mentioned - that's probably where the similarities end. I am not speculating here. I know that there are no secret unlockable characters. I have never heard it brought up before and from what I've played so far (pretty far into the game), it seems unlikely.

2) So? Serah has an important role in the story. She doesn't have to be a playable character in the manual.

You have got to be kidding me. Firstly, that is fake. You can easily tell. Secondly, why would there be a screenshot BEFORE the game is even announced?

That's pretty much the picture constantly used for any screenshots or media on Serah. That's constantly her picture. She's not even in battle position. Believe me, she would not stand with her hands behind her back if she wanted to survive

Regardless of jokes or anything, shame that there are no optional characters...not that I'd use them anyway. I kick enough ass with just Lightning, Hope, and Fang~~ Besides, what kind of weapon would Serah wield anyway??

Like you mentioned yourself, the only way he wouldn't have noticed the screenshots a fake is if he's a total moron. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. And plus, this is the internet/ You're all getting played.
