Not getting enough credit

I know, FFV should get more credit. I still like VI's story better, but the gameplay of V was much more fun and in-depth than VI's Esper system. I prefer it to FFIV, in fact. It's the same with all the games, sadly-one of them always overshadows the rest of the era. I overshadowed the (far superior) II and III, VI overshadowed V and IV, VII overshadows VIII and (the best FF game) IX, and X seems to have already overshadowed XII. A lot of FF games deserve more credit than they get, basically.

It's a shame so many people hate this game.. And I agree this game isn't getting the credit it deserves.. Sure the story was relatively simple, being pretty much a deeper version of an FF1/FF3 hybrid (crystal hunting / job system etc).

But lets think what it does have that is worth playing for...
Faris - a pirate captain lass, with purple hair (in the game, not the Amano artwork). Quite a distinctive character as far as this game goes.

Hydra - A ship pulled across the ocean on the back of a giant sea monster! What more could you want for coolness!

Dragon - You get to fly two dragons as vehicles on the world map. Awesome music during these sequences also.. What other FF game lets you fly a dragon?

Gilgamesh - The introduction of one of the most interesting characters in the FF universe. Gilgamesh is possibly the only true recurring character in the FF universe, being lost via the Void and trasported to FF worlds such as FF8, FF12 etc, each one being stongly hinted at being the same dude. That's not to mention that awesome music that came with him. :P

Void - Similar to above, but it has been suggested that many other characters (ie, Gogo) also got transported via the Void to other FF universes. This could explain trivial things such as the appearance of the Buster Sword in a weapon store in FF9, and Lonewolf being in FF6. No other FF game universe is hinted at having such a link to the others as much as FF5 is. No other FF game has done this.

3 world maps - Just like FF4, this game allows you to travel on 3 different world maps... The normal world map, the alien (sorta) planet world map and the merged world map. Each one is pretty awesome in my opinion.

Death of Galuf
- As mentioned this game provides a rather emotional death scene.. And one very unexpected.. This death scene isn't given away by the back of the case (unlike FF7!). So what if EVERYBODY doesn't get a chance to die (unlike in FF4 where pretty much everyone DID die at some point:P), the one death scene provided was touching, even if the sudden apperance and move transporting onto another character was may have happened a bit too soon and sudden.

Black Chocobo's - I loved the flying Black Chocobo's of this game, and the awesome music! Mambo De Chocobo! Easily one of the best Chocobo themes yet.

The 12 weapons - I think it is 12 anyway... But the legendary weapons towards the end of the game are very interesting. Probably one of the best ulitmate weapon layouts I've seen. To have you do quests and certain stuff to unlock the seals for each one and to go to a certain almighty place to get them was pretty awesome in my opinion.

The job system - I actually quite enjoyed it.. It took a while to get used to, but I was patient, and experimented about a bit. There were some realy good jobs in that game.

Boko - This game introduced the recurring character Boko... A staple name for Chocobo's ever since. I loved the interaction between Bartz and Boko in this game. Truly unique. He was like a 5th party member at times...

I think that covers it.. I'm sure theres more, but its late (half 2 in the morning :holyshit:)...

I'm sad so many ppl hate this game.. There seems to have been a war against FF5 characters in my Final Fantasy version of the Boot and Immune game as well, with all of them being eliminated early on.. Sad realy, as ppl forget what this game brought to us all. A truly great game.

Well not to intentionally disagree with anyone, but I don't care for V all that much. I'm not even talking about the graphics since I know it's and old game. I realize that when it came out it was cutting edge and I probably would have loved it then, but to me there just aren't enough characters. I could site that it's overly difficult at some points but I don't consider that a problem I like difficult RPG's I personally think that the FF series as a whole got way to easy starting with 7. So yeah V is hard but that's not my problem with it. my problem is it's very generic, the Characters are boring with the acception of Galuf, and X Death is a horrible villain story and action wise. He looks cool and villiainous, but honestly his name says it all to me "X-Death" that's generic as hell. All and all it's a good game, challenge wise. It's just not my favorite in the FF series, so no I don't think it's underrated.

I agree, but I think it's just that FFV has been less played and is more scarce to come by. I only got FFV when I purchased FFVI with it in the Anthology Compilation. I had heard people ranting and raving about how good FFVI was, but I never knew anything about FFV. So I popped in FFV and it's turned into one of my favorite games in the series actually.

I agree that it has been overshadowed by 6 and I won't even mention 7. I just think that the character development is really lacking. They should have made Galuf or Faris the main character. Not Bartz. He has no real back story. We know nothing about him or his reasons for fighting. He has none with the exception of exploring the world to my knowledge. I think they should have made him a sub character and focused more on Faris or Galuf. I think Ex Death is an extremly generic villain. We don't even know his motives for being evil he just is... sorry but that's just not enough for me. When I play a game I enjoy really personally hateing and loathing the main antagonist. No matter how hard I try I can't feel for the characters in this game. I mean when Kefka destroyed the world in the middle of the game I was pissed I wanted to fuck that guy up. When Sephiroth killed Aerith I was ready to rip him a new asshole. When Ex-Death killed Galuf I was shocked but I didn't really care that much and he's my favorite character story wise in FF 5. My point is I don' feel personally connected to any of these characters. In all the other FF's I have played I felt like I was actually one of the charcters in the game, but I don't in this one. I still think it's a good game and definitly worth playing if you are a FF gamer. I just dont think it's the best.

I always hear about FF6 being the best 2-d final fantasy game overall. Does anyone else think that FF5 should get more praise than it has?

No.

I really should expand on that, but anyone that knows me knows I hate this game. It was awful and gave me nightmares, all it really had going for it was Faris....ok, so it wasn't THAT bad....it just hated me.....plus the job system sucked big time. I liked jobs until I played this game. They were awful.

VI is FAR superior to V
