Not sure whatever it is my imagination or not.

In Tidus's "defualt" face expression (the one he usually have), he seems to be smiling.
But when he is supposed to be angry/sad during a cut-scene, he still have this defualt smiling dace expression.

For example, he says "I hate you!" and he really looks & sounds angry .
But a second latter (after stoping talking), he returns to his default expression and similing again.

It really annoyed me. I found it really hard to see Tidus's emotions.
I Knew how he felt at the moment, but his face expression just didn't fit and ruined everything.
I hoped they have fixed it in FFX-2. But they didn't...
Yuna can say "I am angry!" and a second latter keep smiling like she usually do.

I think that they focused all the emotion of the characters graphics wise within the FMV's and the cut scenes that weren't FMV's but better then when the characters are in play.

If they tried to maintain their feeling graphics wise throughout the entire game, it would have taken longer to finish creating it. XD

I'll admit it is a bit annoying when you see them smiling after something tragic has happened, but it's just a game and you can't really be picky when it comes to these things. >_<

Yuna did ask for a adventure that was full of smiling ! xD

But yeah feel kinda slow because never noticed it while playing before..

But yeah Final Fantasy X's graphics are slowly starting age and slowly by slowly each year we are going to notice things that we didn't before and the graphics mistakes Squaresoft made while making the game.

But yeah Kandy- Sugar is right. It's only a game and no matter what game you play you are always going to start slowly noticing things graphics-wise that are kinda sloppy aged or funny or annoying. Like Final Fantasy VII's lego graphics with the block arms and no noses...

Lolol, that annoyed me so much. I kind of got used to it though, although near the end when he's talking to Jecht and he's smiling, I thought it was kind of odd then. And after the FMV when he cried he was smiling again. Everyone else didn't really have that problem.. Except Wakka.

Lol... I guess I noticed it too but didn't get irritated too much.

Tidus' standard face had that weird smile thing he does and so I guess they set it only to animate his face for certain key emotional triggers and then for the rest of it they just let his face hang in default, which was semi-smiley.

I guess we just have to be happy that they did animate the faces quite well when they did. In many games at that time facial expressions were often pretty much fixed forever. For its time FFX did it really, really well I felt.

I noticed a few times, but I guess I never really thought about it until now. I'm guessing SE thought that people would be more focused on the gameplay, but even then, you notice things at random. Tidus and his odd default face is one of them. You can tell how he feels, but his expression just didn't go with his current emotions, which can be little irritating.......and creepy. They make up for it using the movie cut scenes and all that, but still, the damage has been done.

Wasn't it Yuna that mentioned how she would practice smiling even when she was sad?

Looks like Tidus was already doing just that.

It was probably just something in the game code. Maybe after they changed expressions for a certain reason, they were meant to go back to their original expressions by default. Maybe Tidus is just so happy go lucky, that he just smiles when he should frown.

Tidus has what's called an "indelible grin" though I just assume it's his default game face. Laziness on the creator's part really. Though there were times when Tidus was expressing an emotion, and he wasn't grinning or his eyebrows were drawn in if he was angry or upset. For example after Operation Mi'ihen, he dives in the water after Sin and it zooms into his face after he stops swimming. He's not grinning and he looks quite upset. Another example is when he finds out the truth about Yuna's pilgrimage. His facial expressions change a lot throughout that entire scene. So I mean he does have facial changes with his eyebrows and his mouth when something like that happens. Maybe not always, but he does have them.

It never really bothered me any. Granted, I suppose I'm more used to "old-school" gaming, where characters barely even had their own faces let alone expressions. I get too involved with the story to worry whether or not a character is making the correct facial expression.

Yknow every expression in FF10 takes up roo on the disk ok so if Sqare felt that a plain epression in some scenes was what they needed to get the best out the FMVs and add more to the game its only nowadays a game have full on facial interactions what with them fancy blueray discs and all lol. Or you can look at like they chose plain faced characters to save money and that FF10 was a cheap game?

Huh. I think it has to do with Tidus ignoring his emotions. He tells everyone else to let them out, but in being a hypocrite, he keeps most of his in. He doesn't want to be a burden to everyone else, so he keeps a happy mask on his face.

That's what I think at least.

As for Yuna, she probrably picked it up from Tidus. ^^

For its time - and heck, for this time - FFX's are great. His default expression did seem a bit plain, but it would have costed money and taken more effort etc to keep the expressions exact whenever they show emotion. I wouldn't call it smiley, actually. He did look a tad plastic though.

It's a game, you can't expect picture perfect graphics when it comes to ingame graphics.

I never really noticed this...I always thought Tidus' mouth just turned up in the corners naturally. He didn't always look like he was SMILING smiling to me. And Yuna didn't always smile, either... I guess I'll have to pay closer attention, I guess. It's never bothered me, though.
