As all of you know Final Fantasy XIV will be an online game just like it's predecessor Final Fantasy XI. I have been looking up more info on Final Fantasy XIV when I ran across this statement on IGN during a press conference.

How does the leveling system work?
Square Enix is cagey about how characters advance, but it has confirmed with IGN that growth is not based on experience and that it will work on a different system entirely.

Also, on Eurogamer, during a video interview posted by Famitsu:

"This time, there will be no experience points or level system," said producer Hiromichi Tanaka in the interview, which you can watch on YouTube or read about on Scrawl. "It will be a different system altogether."

While going through the IGN article, I read something that made me wet my pants in excitement and glee.

Will the PlayOnline service be used for FFXIV?
No. Square Enix told us that the reason it is ditching the PlayOnline system is because it was originally meant as an all-in-one solution to house multiple content types. But as PlayOnline has offered less content over the years, the need for the next online Final Fantasy to us PO is moot. Whatever new service (if any) is used, PC and PlayStation 3 users will still be able to play with each other on the same servers, and Square Enix also confirmed with IGN that you can sign in with a universal ID on either system to pick up where you left off if you own both.

If you've ever used, or tried to use the PlayOnline service, you would know that it's... not easy. So hearing that it would be taken out excited me greatly. Taking out the huge flaw that is PlayOnline promises that at least signing up to play FIV won't be a headache inducing disaster.

As far as the new "leveling" system goes, although I'm sort of skeptical. (Due to another game trying this and failing on the concept.)However, I'm eager to get in there and try it out.

What other game have you tried without exp? I've played tons of MMOs and never saw one that didn't use exp.

T'was a pay to play MMO by the name of Darkfall. You didn't have exp or leveling up. However, it was way too easy to farm your skills. In just an hour you had people that maxed out their skills (which is just another way of leveling to be quite honest) and were out slaughtering noobs that didn't get a chance. (It was also an open PvP game, meaning that even in town you could be ganked.)

even MGS Online uses exp to gain levels. Im still trying to figure out what else could possibly replace exp for a game like this.

Well, what I think is going to replace the leveling up system is something like the AP system from FFIX. As you get more and more AP, you learn more skills. (Also, kind of like FFTA-2) All in all, it's just another way of leveling.

So, something like Star Wars Galaxies pre CU. That can work. Hell it worked for that game till Sony screwed it up to make it compatible on the XBox but in the end they lost 90% of their player base.

Honestly, this makes me frown, but hopefully the alternative system will make up for it. I've played a few RPGs that haven't used exp, and I prefer RPGs that do to those that don't, but those that don't have been good enough to keep me playing...although some of them haven't been good enough to stop me complaining. XD

As far as MMORPGs go, I have limited to no experience. I played World of Warcraft for about ten minutes. If I get FFXIV (and I probably will, since I have a PS3 now) it'll be my first MMORPG. So...reserving judgement on this until I get more information.

It worked really well on SWG. It had an actual community and not just a bunch of players seeking to level/gear hunt.

isnt this news a bit old? they already said no exp months ago..skills would be needed to upgrade , like a poster here said, ap.

That really owns,as my PC is on the old side, and my ps3 is linked to a 38" TV through an HDMI cable :D That is so genius.

Yes, it is old news, but it hasn't been posted here before. Hence, the thread. Also, I just mentioned the idea of AP a couple of posts ago...
