I was wondering why none of the newer Final Fantasy's have the same game set up as the older ones. You know where you can run on the world map, and then "enter" areas. With the new power of the systems you could make a Final Fantasy that has an extremely in depth storyline, and character make up, and add more features (like possibly no matter what type of item you put on the character its always visible, like shoes, helmets, etc.) while still making everything look top notch graphics wise.... What do you guys think? Would you like to see Final Fantasy's resort back to the old style or keep the newer type?

I like the new style because I really feel part of the world. I see what you mean but the FF series is evolving like the hardware that powers it. One of the redeeming qualities of FFXII was how immersed I became in the world. I found having an overworld would make the game kinda boring to travel between places. I loved going through passages, caves and deserts to go from one place to another. I only used the teleport crystals when absolutely needed but prefered to travel on foot because of how beautiful Ivalice was created.

I can only see FF further evolving. I'm not taking remakes into consideration with the above opinion.

They should resort back to the old style in terms of fun but nothing else. I am sort of torn as I started FF half way through the series so I've managed to play both but although I thought the old style was fun its not the way forward, as soon as SE find that fine line between fun and a great 'new' style you will have one hell of a game. ^_^

No, they should keep in the way they are going. Sure the old way of battling, gameplay and such were great, but this new method that was showcased in FFXI, FFXII, and hopefully future games is adapting to the future of gaming. It's more real-life which is what the average game is hoping for down deep; the more realistic the game, the more it sucks you in.

Sure we all love the old stuff, but we can't just live in the past.

I liked the old style at times, but i like the new style better. it makes u feel more like u actually r the characters u're playing. i dnt want it to go back to the old style now that ive seen what direction there going in with the battle systems

*well the classics have a more adventurous aura to them when venturing through world maps,
so i guess it was better than the fixed area views on the new series.

*but hten again they made the venturing more easier and have high quality graphics to entertain us :)

*personnaly any new system or features they add are ok to me,cause if they left the old systems to play with itd be boring and wed see the same thing over and over in the new series to come :)

i think XII is closer to the older ones then X, as in XII you can explore the world, where as X is quite linear.
i think the only real difference is the quality of the graphics.

You know where you can run on the world map, and then "enter" areas
thats still the same, the areas you could enter are towns ect, places of interest, like tomb of the unknown king. square spent money making these places look good, but didnt pay much attention to the outside of this, but in XII the world outside looks as good as the towns ect, so i dont really think that they have actually changed the style of the game

They can go along with the new style, but they should make them feel less like MMORPG's. And make it so that the games do not play themself. ;)

Well, the point of the fully-rendered flowing environment is to make the game feel more immersive and realistic. From a certain point of view, the idea of the World Map and pre-rendered backgrounds is really shorthand for the kinds of traveling that goes on in FFXII.

eg. Areas like the Ozmone Plains or the Mosphoran Highwaste would likely have not existed - they would have just been an area of the World Map coded with different monsters and with different rendered elements.

Also, note that with the World Map, the battle system would have had to have been done with random battles, or with some kind of symbol system/metonymy like in KH: Chain of Memories.

I like your idea of the equippable items being visible on the characters, though I feel like Square would rather use the processing power for orgasmic FMVs rather than tidbits. It would make for some awesome easter-egg items (imagine Basch in wedding dress armor). For now they'll probably stick to only weapons being visibly different.

I really disliked the MMORPG feel of FFXII and would really like the older styles better, but I will say that I applaud Square for at least trying different stuff out. I think FFX was a great combination of traditional FF elements and more cutting edge aspects like the linear approach to location.

The "new" style of FF is ruining the franchise. I went from turn base bliss to hack'n'slash? WTF? If I wanted endless hitting of the same button, I'd play Dynasty Warriors or other games like Drakengard. FF isn't about, hit the X button until it dies. It's formulating the best strategy for every battle. Not stand there and watch your party die when you're trying to fuckin CURE them. I don't know how many times I attempt to just simply cast Cure, and everyone dies right before I cast it.

FF is about diversity. Switching to an MMORPG feel is just doing what everyone else is doing. FF invented turn base, so stick with what got you to where you are. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yea I myself think a good mix between the new and old would work wonders like someone mentioned above.

What do you think would be a good mix between old and new style that would make it refreshing?

I think that maybe a mix between both would do fine...but I think they kinda screwed up a bit with XII I mean the battle system was fine and all but it kinda got annoying sometimes...specially because you were way too slow at the start. Kinda made me wanna quick playing.
Being able to see the armor and such on the characters would be fine, but that would mean seeing a different image of them every time you saw the. Some times I think they would even looks stupid, I think they should only stick of changing the weapons and that's all, I don't wanna see my character with a whole bunch of huge armorn on them. Thank you.

Yea a bunch of wierd looking armor bunched together would look wierd on a character, but what if they resorted back to the more simpler worlds they could free up a ton of space, and allow for them to make multiple armor, hats, helmets, boots, etc, with the same stats. of course there would be better, and worse armor, but if there was a big variety with some of the things having the same exact stats, you could pick and choose what would look best on your char. It would make it more like an RPG that way, and feel more like YOUR character. Maybe even choose the weapon type, without adding the annoying extra things. Like take FF7 for instance, if you had a special move system like that but the special moves would change depending on what type of weapon you are using.. maybe the more you use a weapon, the higher your stats for that type of weapon goes? Idk.. either way they could do alot more I think if they cut down on a few things.

I actually like the newer battle system. Loved the ATB and whatnot but the Gambit is also good. Having the World Map gone, as much as I liked them, has allowed for better environments but unlike X that made it linear and boring, XII actually did it right by making a really interesting. To get to places in XII you can chose which route to take, what routes NOT to take, and what you can do along the way....with X or the old games with the World Map you had the route almost forced on you somewhat.

XII was awesome, it just needed a better story and a few tid-bits to have been smoothed out.

I think the old style was awesome specially FFX 's style the new style...hmm..I didn't like it that much.

FF invented turn base, so stick with what got you to where you are. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
In fact, turn based battle was invented before FF. At least, Dragon Quest uses it before.

Anyway; i still love the old style, but after play a lot the Tales series, and olders ones are Secret of Mana, Star Ocean, etc; i like it more the new action style.

And come on!! those random battles were kinda annoying! =P

out wiv the new in wiv the old ! i want ff back to the way we all grew to love it ! (ff7,8,9)

I personally like the Newer systems they are coming out with. It brings new life and more of an audience to the game.

I mean, I hear that FFXIII will be more like your original FF games and Versus is supposed to be the newer KH style battle system.

So, all in all, Square is giving us Old & New. There isn't much to complain about. haha.

I actually like that they're trying new things with the new Final Fantasy games, like switching the style. Sure it's not like the style of the old games, but that doesn't mean that it can't be fun. Sure if it gets bad reviews they'll try something new or revert back to the old styles, but at least their trying to be creative and come up with something different.
