Hi everyone. I was just wondering if you guys would mind giving me your opinion on a little dilema that has been plauging me for a while.

I have recently applied for a job at a book shop. Usually they don't even accept an application but for some reason this time they liked me enough to accept it for further examination. This gives me around an 80% chance of getting an interview.
The book shop is in the next town over. It is a three mile walk or a 10 minute drive to get there. I also go to college in the same town so I was thinking that I should move to the next town over with a friend if I can sort it all out.

I'm going to uni next year in september so my mom says that it would be a waste of time to move and that ii should just stay put. The only thing wrong is that I can't get to work during term holidays. My mom said that she would drive me for the summer but after that Im on my own. I don't drive and when I move I would be within walking distance. So wat do you guys think I should do?

Thanks

cant you get the bus? Or walk? 3 miles aint that much of a trek really, get a bike?

I'm with your mum on this one, whats the point of moving out now? Just suck it up until you go to uni - the money is only gunna get sucked up on bills and shit anyway so it'd just be a waste of time. Plus you would have to save for a deposit, possibly furnish the place etc etc

I'm sure you have to be 18 for rented accom, though I did it myelf admittedly, but I was with someone over 18 at the time... you will likely need a guarantuer (sp) if both you and your pal are under 18.

It's not worth it mate

Public transport...it's amazin

If you live in England (or America, never noticed sorry) you won't get any funding other than loans for your endeavours, so you'll have (lots of) Uni bills fired on top of accomodation/house bills (genuinely you don't have a clue how many pile up until you start paying for them yourself!) and unless you have a bad relationship with your mother then you'll likely live at home scot-free until you're kicked out :wacky:

Better financially to stay put

That said, so was I, but I fuckin love my flat and I never want to move back with my parents, I'm too free now

Walking 3 miles isn't that big a deal really. If you have an ipod or something the time will fly. Otherwise you could get a bike which would cut the time in half. Alternatively you could get your drivers license (I'm assuming you don't have it, correct me if I'm wrong). You may even be able to hitch a ride with a co-worker or something. Or you could just take public transport if it's available (as Riku and Bambi suggested).

If you're mum is going to drive you during the summer then you have that sorted out and plenty of time to think of the other options you could take. I think moving out is a little extreme at this point and it only creates more financial burdens for you (which defeats the purpose of getting a job in the first place).

If your heart's set on moving out then that's your choice really. But from my perspective it doesn't really seem sensible at this point.

Well, as others have said already, 3 miles of travel is nothing really. I think that for the sake of not having to pay rent and such, that staying with your parents (or just your mother?) would be the better idea. You get to live for free (I assume) and you don't have to have as many responsibilities and such (again, assuming). If my assumptions are the case, then staying home would be a lot cheaper for you in the long run, because a book store salary is still pretty tough to live on.

But the counterpoint to my arguement is that not living with your parents will give you a lot more freedom. But at the cost with a weak salary isn't really worth it. I'd say wait until you can support yourself before you make that leap of freedom.

Best of luck my friend. :ryan:

Book shop won't offer much cash, and with University involved as well, the only fear I have is your transportation fees. I would not say move out, because trust me, unless you are paying rent with your mom right now, there is a huge benefit of not having to pay a huge monthly fee.

Personally as well I don't see the money you make from there, really paying for anything except maybe a cell phone bill or entertainment expenses. I'd say tough it out with your mom, and make sure 100% you have the job before making rash decisions.

Okay thanks for your responses but I think I should clarify a few things. I typed miles instead of hours xD So yeah it's a three hour walk :L.
I do have a bike and that would cut it to about an hour and a half. Another thing that I should piont out is that I live in the midlands (so yes in england) but the uni i am going to (fingers crossed) is in south wales. So I will defo be moving out then anyway. Those who mentioned busses there is only one bus about every hour and to pay each day would be aroudn 5 GBP a day or over a hundred to use it by paying monthly.

thats still cheaper than running your own home

Rent
council tax
tv licence
water rates
Gas
electric
food

that amounts to substantially more than a hundred quid a month even split between 2

the deposit for rented accomodation is usually at LEAST the equivillent of a months rent.

cant you get some form of travel card or other? go into the information place they have in bus stations - you're a student, why can't you get a discount?

Internet/phone line as well

Even if you were in full-time employment over the summer you'd probably not be able to afford all of that at this age in a bookshop, and remember you'd only be able to do part-time when you were at Uni so your wages would drop drastically.

Get a part-time job where you live just now and get the relevant student discounts and you'll be fine.

Unless of course your parents can pay for everything comfortably...

You aren't going to be making enough money to be able to cover everything you need when you move out. At 17, I'd guess you'll be on about £5 an hour. £5.50 if you're very lucky. Even if you're working full time, you won't make £200 a week. Your rent alone will be in the region of £70, I'd say (probably more). Then you've got living costs thrown on top of that. There's just no way you can live off what you'll be earning.

Stay at home and look for a job there.

Ahh ok, then I understand your concern with the 3 hour walk as opposed to 3 miles away. :lew: Then I'd say find a means of transportation to stay out of the cold winter. I would offer options on tranportation, but I'm not familiar with what transportation is more commonly used in your country. But I still say that staying home is the best way to go.

Thanks for your guys advice. To be honest I wasn't sure about it start with but now I've found a place and my friend has got a job there too. I don't really use the internet that often really. I also found out that the average payment per month (calculated bi-monthly) is around £200/£300. Including my friends job salery we should be able to afford the place. The money wasn't really something that I was concerned over.
As far as other bills go I get some bills such as tax removed or reduced because I am registered as mentally dissabled. In the end it comes down to me being able to cope with living so far away from my work and college.

I still havn't made my mind up yet so I will keep looking into things as the summer starts.

Also the rent of the place is about £350 a month witch isn't too bad.

You will still have to pay to use it though regardless, and you're likely to get tied into an 18 mth contract - or go without

Eh, it's your decision, I just think it's a foolish one

I don't think you are as clued up about living on your own as you think you are

just because you think you will get help with shit, doesnt mean you will because you are moving in with another person who has an income, I imagine the only way it will benefit you is not having to pay tax/NI on your wage or summat - plus whatever benefit you will get on top of that, which will be cash and not bills wiped.

I cant see you getting any other reductions - but I don't know for sure

Eh, it's your life, Im sure you will go ahead and do it anyway, i hope it all goes well for you

is the place you are looking at furnished?

Like I said I havn't decided yet. I might not be all clued up about moving out as you put it but it isn't the first time I've had to live on my own. I was asking your advice because I don't know if I should go again

Not sure about England but if you're a full-time student in Scotland you're entitled to free council tax (and that includes water) so that's the only other reduction I can think of.

Anyway the general consensus of the internet is DON'T GO

Also, I think I speak for everyone when I ask...mentally disabled? :wacky:

Your university might require you to use the internet a lot more. It depends what kind of course you're doing and upon your university, but there's a good chance you'll have to use the internet to read journals articles, essays etc. You might even have to do some tests online. Here, the way that you contact lecturers, but more often tutors is through the internet.

Yes I know that and have explained that next September (Sept 2011) I will be moving away anyway. To somewhere far away with a guaranteed first year student accommodation. The campus I am going to had free wireless Internet access and that includes all halls of residence.

So yes as most people will be able to tell I have decided not to move out until uni starts in 2011. Thanks for most of your advice although some of it was a little condescending. other than that most of you were really nice about it :3 thanks guys .
