Square Enix has released two extremely thick books including everything relating to Final Fantasy XIII inside them. Scans from the Scenario and Battle Ultimania are beginning to appear on the internet and with them some very interesting artwork and test footage of the game from before E3 2006.

The screenshots are actually from the Playstation 2 version of the game and it looks like they went in two completely different artistic directions before both of them were scrapped. The characters used in the screenshots are Yuna and Rikku heavily stylized and wearing completely different outfits. You can also see how the battle UI resembles what was used in the final game but with additions such as MP. See the screenshots below.

Haha, oh my, seems XIII could've had cell shading to it xD

But yeah, after seeing the drool worth graphics of the PS3 game, the difference in quality is definitely apparent. I'm not saying these PS2 graphics are bad, but the PS3's graphics are really a helluva lot better.

And personal chuckle at Yuna and Rikku as playable characters, even if they're just for the sake of testing or whatever xD

Nice that they used my girl Yuna for testing :awesome:

And it didn't look that bad. Why couldn't it stay on the PS2? It was do-able. I see that the PS3 version looks way better. I guess I can accept that. Glad they allowed us to see how it looked on the PS2.

I'm glad that they decided to put it on hold and have it released out on the PS3. The PS3 has better quality to it and from what i've seen of the screenshots on the PS3 it is a lot better compared to the PS2. The PS2 isn't bad but now that the PS3 is out the PS3 puts the PS2 into shame D=

I actually like the cel-shaded style they used in those screenshots. I'm kind of saddened to see it didn't happen.

I agree with this, I know some people dont like it when companies use cel-shading for there games but I think that it would have been cool to see a cel-shaded FF. Not that I am not happy with the way FFXIII went, it's a beautiful looking game. I just think that it would have been cool to see if that is where they would have taken the game. :busta:

I will forever wonder what might have been had they given it the cell shaded look. Personally, I hope they keep the option under consideration for future games because a Final Fantasy with a cell-shaded look would actually be pretty cool.

That was Yuna in her Warrior dressphere xD and i'd expect Rikku is in warrior or gunner :wacky:

The battle graphic style just looked... Horrible xD sure shows the difference between PS2 and PS3.

Yuna's arm is huge in the third picture :lew:

I can only the idea of FFXIII being cellshaded played on for a minimal amount of time, I think it would have been too much of a drastic change from top quality CGI scenes :hmmm:

If you were looking at that really long protruding thing coming out from Yuna, I don't think that's her arm, but the long mouse-tail hair-thing (I have never managed to figure out what the heck it is) she has! :wacky:

A cel shaded FF game would be good only for a spinoff maybe, but not a proper FF installment. We've seen how unpopular at first cel shading did to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, as it would be too much of a radical change. People would just suggest a cel shaded FF game would be too childish or something equally as daft. :hmmm:

I'm all for a cel shaded FF spin off game! If Dragon Quest VIII and Rogue Galaxy can do it, hey- why not a Final Fantasy spin off?

Oh right haha, either way it looks pretty messed up :wacky: I wonder why they chose to use Yuna to test the game ideas though, Ashe would have been a more suitable female to use :hmmm:

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that since the development team behind FFXIII was also responsible for FFX and FFX-2, I think that could be why they used Yuna and Rikku rather than Ashe. I can't remember exactly now, but I think it was mentioned somewhere. :hmmm:
