A fashion model and blogger was trying to thank the pilot when she walked into a plane's propeller, severing her hand and slashing her face, her parents say.

Lauren Scruggs remains in a stable condition after several surgeries at a hospital in Texas following Saturday night's horrific incident.

The 23-year-old had been taking a joy ride aboard the two-seater plane to watch Christmas lights.

The pilot landed at a private airport in the city of McKinney and Scruggs had stepped onto the tarmac when she was struck by the spinning propeller.

Her parents told US network ABC they were not sure how the accident happened but believed Scruggs had turned back to thank the pilot when the accident occurred.

One friend said she may have lifted her left hand to block her face when it was cut. She also suffered severe damage to her shoulder and head.

Scruggs was flown by helicopter to hospital where doctors amputated her hand.
According to friends posting updates on her condition, Scruggs has begun speaking from her hospital bed and told family members she loved them.

Her left eye is still bandaged and it is not known how badly her vision is damaged.
The parents said doctors told them to expect a long road to recovery.

"The most important thing is that she loves the lord, but besides that, she’s a fun-loving, gregarious, outgoing young lady that’s never met a stranger," the father said.

"She would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it."

Scruggs is editor of an online fashion magazine and also worked in the costume department of TV show Gossip Girl.

Aviation authorities are investigating the accident.

I thought that this was really sad. =(

When I first heard about it I didn't know that they actually had to amputate her hand. =0 The poor thing is only 23. =(

I thought that passengers were usually escorted off or at least told how far to go away from the plane before turning back or anything. It's strange that she was that close for it to happen.

i wonder why the most important thing was her loving the lord, never mind that shes still alive... anyway, not the point, ijust find it strange

Unlucky, pretty much sums it up for me.

that's pretty stupid really. everyone has a sense of spacial awareness to tell them if big dangerous sharp spinning things are close by, and usually enough common sense not to stick their hand in them.

I heard about this a couple of weeks back.

Apparently, standard safety protocol for exiting a plane was not followed. It's really hard not to giggle a little bit and think "what a blonde thing to do", but it is sad. Kinda like the story with that guy who was cleaning his gun and shot his wife in the ass on accident.

I see this is a semi-old post but I have a valid point to make.

Would this make the news if it happened to someone who wasn't so attractive? Not at all :\

I couldn't have been the only person who thought the title of this thread was setting up for a punchline.

Poor lady.

I'm inclined to disagree. The news constantly report freak accidents that happen to a variety of people.
