hmv is finally going into administration:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a450998/hmv-to-go-into-administration-tomorrow.html

i hardly find it surprising, considering the ridiculous prices they charge for most things. you can usually find at most five or six decent offers, while everything else is ridiculously overpriced and then some. plus they never made the switch over to compete with the digital download market until a couple of years ago, when it was far too late.
i thought when virgin/zavvi closed a few years ago, it would only be good news for hmv since there's nowhere else to go to buy films and music brand new in the uk other than independent retailers, discounting supermarkets of course. i do wonder if it will leave a big enough gap in the market for another chain to take their place. i know zavvi still operate online, so it may lead them back into high street retail.

I'm not surprised either. They're expensive. As simple as that. At least the ones near me...
Why go to HMV when you can go cheaper at Amazon etc :hmmm:

When I visited I didn't think they were that expensive. Coming from Australia those prices seemed a bargain to me... Even when you converted the price to aussie dollars they were still under half the price of a dvd/bluray over here. So this is pretty sad, where will I get my cheap dvd's from the next time I visit? ;_;

woohoo. FIGHT THE POWER.

FUCK YOU HMV. TAKE YOUR PRICES AND POKE THEM UP YOUR HOLE.

UP YE UP YE UP YE.

physical shops have had it now. online shops are just so much cheaper. its for the best.

I hardly ever used HMV anyway to be honest but occasionally you'd pick up a deal. It's weird but I hardly ever buy new CDs/DVDs/games any more unless I'm buying them as a gift for someone - I'll happily go into entertainment exchange or that's entertainment and pick up DVDs for like 75p instead, as long as they work it really doesn't bother me. And there's looooads of those stores around nowadays so I'm not really surprised HMV has finally gone under :hmmm:

i don't know how they justify their prices sometimes. i was in there today, and they had the trainspotting steelbook for £17, which is only £11 on amazon. it's never hard to find things much cheaper elsewhere than in hmv, so it's no surprise at all that they've been struggling in recent years. it's not even online stores that are cheaper though, pretty much everywhere that sells dvds is cheaper than hmv these days.
i imagine this will also have a knock-on effect for waterstones as well, since they're also owned by hmv

everywhere else is cheaper because of online shops. the big playas like hmv, game etc etc etc they think they're too big to be affected. incidentally they arent. that's why they end up going out of business.

I buy pretty much ALL my DVDs on Amazon but i fucking love browsing through HMV :sad3: I could happily look through that shop for hours and hours. I wonder if theyl have some kind of everything must go sale :ohoho:
Seriously though i think thats sad news as i like that shop and not just for films but for headphones and memorabilia in general. Shit i better spend my points :gasp:

that's what they did when itunes took off. apparently they were offered some sort of similar software to compete, and they thought they didn't need to bother with it because they were so big. it's sad to see places like hmv and jessops, and probably waterstones ver soon, shutting down because of decisions like that

thats just the way or the world.

not so long ago it wouldve just been small independent shops selling music, videos etc etc. then the big chains came along. now they're dying.

such is the power of the internets.
