Is FFXIV Really that Disappointing?

Final Fantasy XIV just released about 10 days ago, on September 30th, but it has received lots of bad comments and ratings. In the latest review by Gamespot, FFXIV was given a 4.0 score and poor rating. If you look around you can find the criticism has begun since the Beta phase. The interface, tutorial, shopping, combat, and quests, etc, it seems that every aspect of the game is a failure.

Is FFXIV really that disappointing? Can someone has played the game honestly tell me why? I'm just about to try the game.
 
I played the beta and i have to say that FFXIV is shit !

You don't have many quest from the ai,and its hard to level up!The dormancy system making it not worth it!And the world seems empty !

Mod edit: Could you tell us why you think this? =) Otherwise it's not helping the poster very much.

FFXIV is seemingly tailored for people who A: Don't have enough time to devote to playing a MMO; B: People who like crafting more than actually playing a game. There are no Auction Houses in FFXIV, an attempt by SE to combat the RMT. However, imo, this is rather detrimental as it also affects everyone else who plays the game. So far, there are only 5 Map/Areas in the game and three of them are starting areas, so that is limiting (though that may be rectified by the time the PS3 version comes out, though I'm not holding my breath). All in all, FFXIV is a disappointment, though there are other threads similar to this one on other forums I go to, all roasting this game for how 'abysmal' in their opinion, it is. Speaking for myself, I played FFXIV very briefly on my neighbours PC... and I can say it isn't just disappointing... it's pathetic (imo that is). SE rushed it's release to beat World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, as well as to try and build a player base for itself to compete against the upcoming Star Wars The Old Republic. I'll be sticking with FFXI myself, until SWTOR is released next year. Also, there's still plenty of areas in FFXI to be explored. Only 40% of FFXI's world map has been explored, so hopefully Akihiko Matsui (Former Battle Director of FFXI, now new Head Director of FFXI) will decide to bring a proper/full expansion out for FFXI (as SE has stated that as long as FFXI brings them money, they'll keep it running) which can explore the rest of Vana'diel.
 
I haven't played this myself, but I did read over several reviews, and even watched some videos about it. And after my reading, and watching of the many reviews, I do think that this game was rushed just a bit too much. Some say it was rushed to beat the new expansion pack of WoW. Whether or not that's the case doesn't bother me, but by the reviews, and how crappy the game runs from the video's stand-point, I can say that SE needs to really re-think about what they're going to do in the MMORPG genre.

They definitely need to redo this if they want to complete out their notion of going deeper into the PC-gaming era.
 
I still have yet to play it too, waiting on the PS3 version. However I have seen a few negative reviews on it but I have yet to actually get my friends review on it. I hope it's not bad since I gave up playing FFXI a while ago just to wait for the game. Worst case scenario, I will buy the game when it gets cheap and just start on FFXI again.
 
IGN gave it a 5.5. I think this quote pretty much sums up what I considered a major fault with the game:

When it comes to MMOs, what really separates the best from the rest are the ways they keep the entertainment value high over long tracts of time. In the case of levequesting, you're given kill and collection quotas with an extremely thin veneer of story. It won't be long until each quest starts to feel exactly the same. The ways Square Enix attempts to infuse variety – targets fleeing for reinforcements, targets changing form – fall flat. For the first few levels it isn't particularly noticeable since the process of ranking up your class happens fairly quickly. However, once you reach higher levels and realize there are only a handful of quests you'll need to churn through for hours and hours before becoming powerful enough to reach the next camp and quest set, it's difficult to stay motivated. The game does far too little to mask the fact that it's tossed you on a gerbil wheel.

Personally I've also heard a lot of the same things that other people have said here, though I don't recall what the reviewing website was :hmmm: But the overall idea was that the graphics, sound, and actual story parts were very good; however the gameplay was difficult. One of the big things I heard was that there are a lot of complex systems that are not very well explained, so you have to keep using trial and error; also, that there's some sort of synthesis function that seems like it's based on luck alone; and there are a lot of seemingly empty expanses of environment which make the game tedious, especially when you have to listen to your foot sound effects the whole way unless you want no sound effects at all :ness: And the same limited quest problems.

Really, I think from seeing the reviewers looking at it this way, it does seem obvious that XIV was rushed; I'm pretty sure if they have any sense, they have people with the same evaluation skills as these independent reviewers who must work for SE and test the games out before they're released. And if they do, if the game really is full of problems, then they obviously would have come back with a similar feedback for it. So to release it being fully aware that all those problems exist, IMO is a bit irresponsible of them :/ A game should only be released when it's finished, IMO, and they should approach each project they put out with the same attitude as an unpopular new company might, who doesn't try to get by on their reputation, but wants to try to get people interested based on the quality of the games instead.
 
You have to take what the reviewers say with a grain of salt really. One review I heard about from my brother said something along the lines of people were expecting this game to play like WoW. WoW, being a very easy game which basically carries your hand through the entire thing, having everything laid out for you blah, blah, blah. Which is why so many younger players play WoW because it's so easy. So if you expect Final Fantasy XIV to be like WoW, don't play it because it plays more like an actual RPG. Not everything is handed to you on a silver platter, you actually have to figure things out yourself, yada yada and a lot of people aren't going to like that.

Don't know how accurate that is though.

Other reviews were talking about trouble with the clicking of the mouse I guess, and many of the lands looking too similar and lag (Well of course there's going to be lag everybody is starting at the same place) and I guess they plan to do a complete overhaul this December.

But yeah, I think a lot of people aren't going to like this because you're not going to level up that easily. You're actually gonna have to work for what you got. I don't mind that too much myself.

I think that is depends on the player in question though, as each person has their own opinion etc. Some of my friends I've met in FFXI, have played FFXIV and hated it. Others though, love it. I admit, one of my main gripes about this game is the exp system, but I do have other reasons as to my dislike of this game. One, limited areas to roam, so far only five areas are available and three of them are starting areas. Add in that the areas are similar to FFXI's to the point I've heard talk that the areas are just copy and pasted from FFXI, spruced up a bit and then made into FFXIV (Not 100% sure of that, but that is what I've heard from people in my Linkshell in FFXI). Two, the character designs are just the same races of FFXI, altered slightly and graphically enhanced. SE had the opportunity here to create new and interesting races, instead they opted for the easy way out. Three, and a minor gripe, the elimination of Auction Houses, so the only way to get any gil is by synthing/crafting which is a bugbear in itself. While I can understand SE trying to combat RMT by having no AH, it's also a hindrance to players as well. Four, and this is my main gripe... the payment option. Paying a third party and shady company, to pay SE so you can play? SE should've kept the payment option from FFXI via PlayOnline (SE's own creation), as that was far simpler and easy to use. Those are my main reasons as to my dislike of FFXIV, and imo, they are valid reasons.
 
Final Fantasy 14 seem to be getting a lot of mixed reviews on terms of how good a game it actually is. If it turns out to basically be like Final Fantasy 11 but with a graphic upgrade this may be the first Square Enix game I dislike. I'm still going to withhold judgment until I actually have the chance to play the game for myself because I don't trust reviewers all that much. From my personal experiences they usually don't know what the hell they're talking about.
 
Honestly it is pretty bad but.... they are aware of it and hopefully will make some major updates soon.

The main points for me:

Really bad interface this needs redoing.

The combat system is poor.

The camera angle with the combat system is really bad!

The atmosphere and the graphics of the game are top notch!

Once they iron out these things it will be better.
 
Final Fantasy is a JOKE.

I spent 60 bucks for the game. Then spent whatever the cost of one month on my credit card to register to play. Then spend a whole fuking day trying to get the game to work.

FF is a joke. I joinned FF 11 a couple years ago managed to get logged in and left after 10 minutes never to come back.

NEVER BUY Final Fantasy. NEVER>

An evil part of me kind of hope it does fail.. X.X Hopefully they wont try the online stuff again. Stick to single player please :).
 
Hey i'm new i register just to post on this XD

i started playing the game yesterday i've been playing for about 4 hours i think...

the main problem for me with the game is it's so hard to find out what to do or where to go... i was probably being stupid but it took me nearly 30mins to figure out how to leave the city and get outside to fight lol something i figured out almost immediately on 11...

also maybe its because i'm new but no one seems to be doing anything on the game BUT crafting lol so there's basically no one to team up with or explore with... if someone above says is true about only 5 areas being on the game so far that also absolutely sucks and is quite frankly a disgrace lol

also i'm in Limsa (think that's the name) and i think the whole design although pretty is really annoying to travel around wish it was just a tad simpler aha
