"iPad Will Destroy Nintendo", Says Square Enix

I think he sort of has a point actually. The Ipod Touch/Iphone is already a strong contender in the handheld market and the Ipad has the potential to be so as well. If you ask me, it all depends on what the Nintendo 3DS will be capable of.

Apple's products have the advantage of being so much more than just handheld gaming systems, so Nintendo really has to up their game and create something that is superior as a gaming system in every way, shape and form. If they don't, I don't think many people would bother supporting them.

We can't forget... Apple has tried getting into the video game market before. First with this monstrosity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bandai_Pippin

Then the various of using the iPod as a gaming tool, then the iTouch, and the iPhone now the iPad. All of which have shit for games. Not to mention that the control setup is practically non-existent.

This is nothing more than a SE writer and the SE CEO proving that they're dumbasses incapable of being a part of/running a video game company.

Also, I find it funny that the writer in question helped write Final Fantasy VII. Proof that even some of the writers of FFVII are bloody idiots. :ffs:

I don't think using a pre-Ipod Apple console as an example as to why they wouldn't be able to dominate handheld gaming today really works. Apple today has really unlike any other electronics company managed to sell people a brand rather than a product. I reckon they could corner a healthy part of the home console market if they wanted to, just by brand recognition alone!

I also think the trend is generally going against single purpose handheld devices and the Ipad, Ipod Touch, and Iphone are proof of this. Who really wants to lug around an MP3 player, a phone, and a handheld console if they can have it all in one device?

Nintendo really has to come up with something good next to crack that one, and if they ignoring Apple as a competitor, they are going to lose out.

Personally, I don't think Nintendo has to worry about anything. With the success of the Wii, and every variant of the DS, they practically print money. iPad, just as the rest of Apple's products has nothing (gaming wise that is).

Looking at it from a gaming perspective, and actually having had played games on other Apple products, I can safely say that Nintendo has nothing to worry about, and SE is just talking out of its ass as always.

For example, the iPad is essentally a huge version of the iTouch. After playing multiple games on the iTouch, and discovering that they all had broken controls, and didn't offer much at all, I can determine that the "iTouch huge" (iPad) will offer a boost in graphics, but a loss in just about everything else.

Nintendo will continue to dominate, and Apple will continue to claim they're innovate when all they do is churn out the same product in different sizes. :elmo:

the difference is the audience. casual gamers would buy into the iphone-type games, whereas the rest of us would scoff at it. apple knows very well that it stands no chance against the likes of sony/nintendo/microsoft by adding games to its media devices, especially after sony's attempt to integrate the two using the psp (i love the psp, but the high price point from adding everything in really hurt it from the offset). this is why so far it has stuck with low-cost casual games; its target audience isn't the hardcore gamers that would be more apt to buy a serious gaming console, but the casual gamers who have a few minutes on the bus or during breaks. it appears to be reaping money this way, so it's safe to say it will be a little while before apple decides to make the leap of faith into the gaming industry, considering the development and marketing costs of a game console, and everything related to it.

ipad stands no chance against ninty.

I'm not a big fan of the Ipod Touch interface either (the main reason as to why I don't own one) but to dominate you need to sell units, and Apple are selling Ipod Touches, Iphones, and Ipads at a staggering rate.

Quality will only get you so far, and in that aspect Apple is doing for handheld gaming what Nintendo did for the home consoles with the Wii: They are bringing it to an audience that otherwise probably wouldn't bother with it. Some times on the expense of quality yes, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be taken serious.

After all, the only reason Micro$oft and $ony don't consider the Wii a rival, is because it's outselling them by so much that it is embarrassing (No bias, there's just no S to replace with a $ in Nintendo :P)

Chocobo Panic! That is amazing. I can see myself playing on that for hours! I could fire up Dragon Quest IX on my DS when it comes out, but that is nothing compared to this amazing iPad game!!! OMGZ!!!

...........not. :mokken:

Seriously with games like this, I really cannot see Nintendo be crushed on the gaming front by the likes of Apple. About 80% (and probably more) of the games are/will be minigames like this. Okay, they may become insanely popular, but that that still isn't going to "destroy" Nintendo. People aren't going to spontaneously jump ship from Nintendo to Apple in the droves like that with games like these popping out from developers hoping to make quick bucks.

Oh yes, one more thing, and I'm repeating myself here - Apple's products are still really expensive. Look at the Wii and DS. They're nice and affordable. I have a laptop and mobile phone already. I don't need to spend £400+ on a tablet computer that's inferior to my laptop.
